Sadly most books I read turn out to be completely forgotten because the text is too long just to fill out the pages. They go on and on like an eroge dialogue box and everything feels tiring. I'd much rather learn from videos or short precise tutorials. Books have never been helpful for me.

Despite tl;dr being appropriate for drawing on the right side of the brain, it's a shitty attitude to have more generally.

How valid is pic related? I've been told when drawing giant characters to just keep the proportions at 8 heads tall just up the size of the heads but also I come across others who suggest adding more heads and keeping the head small just like here. Which is the right way to do it?

Study actual existing machinery--robotics, engines, planes, tanks, vacuum cleaners, etc.

A lot of it is designing cool shapes then hinting at some function and surface details like panelling, grates, screws, joints, different materials, serial codes etc.

Sparth actually has several tutorials both in videos and in his book where he talks about this. He'll do things like create a file of random small mechanical shapes and details that he will copy from and skew into perspective to put over his designs...

I've been having some trouble with temperature and saturation shifts that happen from shadow to light.

In what increments do you guys change your saturation and temperature?

Do you follow some kind of a rule? Do these rules depend on brightness of the light source and its color or material and local color of an object being lit?

Thanks!

as long as you keep your VALUE the same, you can change to whatever color you want. There was this really crazy discovery during summer that you can achieve just this in photoshop using LAB color mode. If you're doing it traditionally, it's very easy since you can just add a slight amount of, say, red to a skin tone without effecting the value as badly.

>Do these rules depend on brightness of the light source and its color or material and local color of an object being lit?

Eh, you're kinda right, but wrong if OP cares about making humans that don't look zombified or chromatically-aberrated-color-clusterfuck ruan jia style (which does look cool, I admit). If OP is interested in traditional realism or representational stuff and not fantasy concept art, color DOES matter.

OP, read huevaluechroma to get a good *theoretical* idea about how the noon-linear shift in chroma/saturation happens along the linear progression of value.

As for practical ability to paint it,...

They are the finest in the world, ergonomically, ink quality, variety of colors, and how long lasting the markers are. They're not a disposable product, they're something you buy once and have for life. In the long term, they're cheaper than the alternatives.

Would it be feasible to draw something of this skill level within an hour or two???

Which lessons do you guys follow on New Masters academy and which lectures and instructors do you recommend?

I personally recommend Sheldon Borenstein, especially if you're an absolute beginner, though his humor can get cringe worthy at times and his tendency to deviate from the figure model can be jarring at times, his videos are good for people of all levels (he also has does great introductory lessons for mediums as well)

There's also Erik Olson for perspective, though thats going to eat a bunch of your time

Borenstein is great but yeah sometimes his humor is AWFUL (and sometimes he's actually pretty fuckin' funny), a mixed bag.
>>
>>2771647
Sheldon is fucking awful. You can't go two minutes without him drifting off into some terrible made-up story or unfunny joke, most of his lessons are just a huge waste of time. That's my main complaint about NMA, there's a ton of useless padding that makes some lessons way longer than they should be.

Steve Huston's videos are absolutely great. I still haven't done his figure drawing stuff, but his head construction and painting videos are really good. He's one of those rare cases...

Sheldon's alright, but his humor just kills it for me. And I fucking hate Erick Olson. His perspective series is ungodfully long for something that can be taught in half the time. He's also really bland. Would much rather substitute Olson for Scott Robertson and Vandruff's perspective.

Steve Huston and Glenn Villpu are gods. Must watch if you have a sub.

Karl Gnass and Chris Legaspi are also up there too.

Rey Bustos is interesting but I haven't seen any of his videos yet.
