Hey guys I was wondering if I could start a daily/weekly thread which focuses on learning form and developing form.
After being here for years lurking and posting anonymously, I've found that a lot of beginners have major problems in developing/seeing form, I've noticed many other artists that are highly skilled in certain areas also lacking in this area.
So I thought, lets make a daily/weekly thread that focuses on simplifying and teaching the topic of form, this thread can be contributed to by the intermediate level anons in the board.

Beginner here, slowly working with line and feel like getting less shit (well, by beginner standards anyway). Terrified as fuck of form through value. As such, incredibly interested in what happens with this thread.
Yesterday i decided i want to transition from digital drawing to traditional. As i have started learning straight in digital I have developed really good muscle memory when using a tablet. Now, when im drawing on paper its really hard to keep proportions or draw anything that doesnt look like shit. Please help me with advice or something . I also struggle without undo and transform tool.
Picrel is me on digital, traditional is like 2 months drawing tier shit.
>>2350288 Good movie. But then, I like all of Miyazaki's work.
I find line art is easier. For painting, not only do you have to have to have a good grasp of proportion, and how to use positive and negative space, but you also need to understand color theory, understand how light behaves in three dimensions, and be able to visualize all this in layers, going from dark to light and/or light to dark.
Is anyone else on here unable to visualize in their mind? If you were to close your eyes and picture a red triangle, can you see it? Which of the numbered thumbnails in the attached image best represents what you see? Do you see complete darkness? If you dont know, this is known as aphantasia. A quick google search will get you more info if you want to look into it.
As someone who wants to work professionally in the art field, the inability to store an "image bank" in my mind of references has been incredibly frustrating. I have been attempting to compensate... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2350180 Lol, pretty sure you can't just project images into the black space when your eyes are closed. Perhaps when attempting wake induced lucid dreaming, or while on psychedelics, but that has more to do with being in a credulous state.
I think there's a difference between what you can imagine visually, ie, your 'mind's eye', actually creating visible images. A red triangle is easy to imagine but you can't actually see it. Can you? CAN YOU?
Cause if this is a thing, I've gotten... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Fine arts painting major (I love it to death) going out into the real world in May. As obvious as it sounds, it is frightening to know there isn't a 'job' for fine arts majors. A toooon of "experienced graphic designers with 3-5 years of experience."
I am interested in design. I know /basic/ photoshop and illustrator and a little bit of after effects. I /can/ draw digitally but it just isn't as natural to me as using a brush. I don't want to get another degree, but I am interested in taking more classes or something... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Your degree should open doors for you as far as like, graphic design and so on goes; you'll just have to make a portfolio of some sort. As critical as I am as far as degrees use when pursuing actual art jobs, a fine arts degree sounds great for a normie job like that you can do while daydreaming about the painting you're going to do when you get home.
Usually I do fine, I make some art, I never ever like what I make, but I see its better than last time, I see what I need to work on and try to do better next time.
But every once in awhile I just totally crash and burn, and think Ill never be good enough, that I wont ever be successful because I didnt go to Scad or Calarts or because I dont have 50000 followers on tumblr. I always compare myself to other artists and hate myself for not being as good as them. I practice as much as I can in my free time, but if I ever do something else, like go out or play vidya I feel... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2350027 I'm going through this right now too, OP. It doesn't help that it seems like the times when you feel this way, your drawings seem to really turn out shitty if you muster up the strength to even draw something. I have no idea how to deal with this kind of thing. Usually I just wallow for a bit, watch tv/movies/youtube/whatever or play vidya and just try to clear my head, then load up on coffee and try to draw something and just try not to think. Listening to podcasts helps with the not thinking part. The best... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Ask yourself, why do you draw? Do you have a certain goal? Being an artist is communicating what we want from our minds through a medium. It doesnt matter if you're a chef, painter, musician ect. We are just learning to use our instrument and tools to convey the message. You have potential, everyone here does. You feel this way because you compare yourself to others, so dont. If not you should strive to be better than them. 4chan isnt the best website because >>2350045 . Shit like this is discouraging and will let you down.... Comment too long. Everything in my mind's eye is a fleeting ghost, a fragment or a piece of something at best but never a 'whole'. I feel incredibly stunted and cannot draw hardly anything from imagination except soulless, featureless figure mannequins and even those are riddled with errors and made haphazardly with no sense of weight and no real conception of what they're to be doing.
Do you have this problem or have you had it and surmounted it somehow? What can be done to rectify such a situation? I feel like having an imagination... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
