went to an event with BJDs on display yesterday. i hadn't actually seen any before up close so i took some pics.
last one. i also took pics of some, i assume, rare and old japanese dolls if anybody is interested.
I guess since I was used to 1/12 scale pvc figures, to me, my 1/4 scale doll seemed huge at first.
>see this girl up online for a $100
Damn... Is this a good price?
>you can probably do a better job doing it yourself for much cheaper.
if they don't have experience painting 3D things, or anything all, that's really not true. it'll take a big investment of time, and a somewhat hefty investment of money to get the skills and materials.
also i think calling the makeup subpar is harsh. it is a little bit expensive, but she's pretty.
i guess it's because i'm used to seeing them in pictures without a real reference to scale
a DDH is about 50 bucks, and all the other painting materials (sanding tools, knives, brushes, paints, pastels, sealant, glue) can easily go over 50. You might be able to do better yourself, but if you don't have any tools on hand, 100 dollars for a finished head seems like a pretty good price.
An alternative is to buy the blank head for $50 and spend the extra $50 you have on a custom faceup from an artist of your choice. $50 is usually the average price for the high tier artists. You don't have to get that particular finished head, but I would not recommend trying to do it yourself to save money.
This is a terrible idea. Unless anon is artsy and has worked with acrylic before, he's gonna fuck it up.
Most people suck at faceups. Talent and practice are what makes people good. Lack of the aforementioned doesn't stop people from trying and posting their dolls expecting to get compliments.
Are you guys just lazy and think that buying a poorly pre-painted head?
Talent doesn't exist.
Also instead of paying someone else to do make up on your doll. Having your own "touch" to it makes your girls MORE important to you and creates an intense bond with you.
It's a way better feeling than hiring an egocentric hack to do it for you. I've started painting my own 2 girls myself and I'd like to say I'm close to professional at this point.
Just my two cents.
Someone got rustled cause his dolls look no better than >>14187239 and >>14187032
Just because you asked. I won't. I have better things to do.
You're just mad that what I said is true. Now time for me to go back to just lurking these threads since APPARENTLY my opinions and helpful knowledge aren't appreciated here.
How about you go to tumblr? I think you'll fit in well there.
I'm not mad. I genuinely want to see your dolls. Your opinion and "helpful knowledge" was just "I'm great and you guys are shit", though, so you shouldn't be surprised that the response you got was negative.
Show us your dollies, nerd.
How come you're afraid to post your dolls? I'm not.
I don't know about him, but I'm a little bit afraid that my girl will be bullied for not having any blush, or only having one outfit. Also, I'm terrible at lighting and photography.
Wow this thread went downhill fast, all because some anon tried to cheap out on buying a head.
Pic related is me cheaping out on buying a completed doll, only I went the DIY route, and it ended up being actually not that cheap. (but it was fun)
Don't worry about only one outfit. If you only post one photo, no one will ever have to know that's her only set of clothes. Just make sure to brush her hair before your photo shoot. I think a lot can be forgiven if your girl at least looks clean and tidy.
This is why you go to someone with a portfolio who does this professionally. What shithole did that head come from? Let's pray for it.
I don't consider it lazy. I know my skills and I also know what I'm bad at. I'm great at sewing and bad at painting, so of course I would pay for a skilled faceup artist to paint a head for me instead of wasting the time and money to learn how to paint a doll and how to do it well.
I don't think it's a waste of time or money to learn something new, especially for a hobby. Of course, everyone has different comfort levels and limits, so I do respect your choice as well. That is a very pretty head.
Is it just me or did these things disappear off the face of the earth? I can't find any information on them aside from one or two pics.
>Talent doesn't exist.
that's what parents/teachers/instructors might tell you if they want to motivate you.
reality looks a bit different. here, read this: https://medicine.exeter.ac.uk/media/universityofexeter/medicalschool/research/neuroscience/docs/theeyesmind/Lives_without_imagery.pdf
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but for an Obitsu head, can you use eyes that aren't specifically for an Obitsu?
I'm looking for 12mm anime-style eyes (for a 25cm doll) and wanted to make sure before I bought anything that it would be compatible.
Any way to use shipping proxy on volks page?
When I try to change my addres it says "Country is a required field." and don't let me change to Japan, same happens when I try to make new account.
That's a big difference in size. It depends on which one you really want. Like the other anon said, if you really want a 1/3, better to put that $100 towards a larger doll.
However, if you're totally new to BJDs and don't want to invest in a large doll at first, there are plenty of companies with 1/4 size dolls that are very reasonably priced (in the $200-300 range).
Shit I thought I was in /toy/ for a sec. My previous post was written for someone interested in resin dolls.
If you want an anime-style doll, getting a 1/12 or 1/6 can serve as a good introductory doll if you are unsure if you like them. If you have your heart set on a DD or Smartdoll, better to just save for that.
Polite sage for my morning fuckup.
be careful with what you say, friend.
I don't even know if I have aphantasia. If I close my eyes I can't see anything but I'm perfectly capable of sketching a landscape from memory... definitely can't remember faces worth a shit, though.
>threat appropriate Version
Despite possibly being a typo, this is pretty appropriate.
>official Volks USA promo image
Anon please we are trying to have a nice time.
I'm sorry ;_; it started out as just a normal photoshoot, I don't know what happened. Her name is champignon.
Well, here's my first attempt at using a flat iron to straighten a wig. It's not perfect, but I'll do better in the future. I had problems in the first few minutes, though. I melted a part of the wig and then burned my finger a little bit.
are flat irons supposed to just keep heating up well after they've hit the set temperature, or is mine shitty? I just juggled the on/off switch and didn't have any mishaps after that, and it was a free wig anyway. Now I just have a good reason to learn how to trim wigs.
You did a good job, anon. A good flat-iron should stay at the set temp. However, with my own flat iron, I find the lowest temp setting (300) excessively hot for heat-resistant wigs - not that it damages the wigs but I'd rather not take any chances on a $30 wig (plus $20 shipping) so I use the minimum heat required. So I do exactly what you did. I turn the flat iron on and off while styling to make sure it's not hotter than it needs to be.
>Now I just have a good reason to learn how to trim wigs.
Most important things I've learned:
1) Use sharp scissors
2) Hold the scissors near-vertically (not horizontally). This will give you that wispy anime-hair look rather than a blunt cut that looks like a 3 year old trimmed her barbie's hair
3) Trim A VERY TINY amount at a time. Step back. Take a look. Trim a tiny bit more. Let the style chill for a day or two so you have time to see where any flaws might be. Then repeat until you have what you like
I finally reached the point where I did a major styling of one of my favorite wigs (chopped almost 3'' off of it, and it was curly too) and I'm really, really happy with it.
Nearly ready for the season. Gotta watch out for those sneaky wolves. (Maybe I should get some cat-slitted eyes for this one.)
Aww thank you. The clothing and the rose are a deeper red, my picture make them look a bit too bright than they really are.
I got my cat eyes from a shop called Lizanna. They're resin and have a nice shiny quality that I rather like. I've also seen cat eyes from SQ-labs but never tried them personality, though they also look nice.
Finally, after over a month of having her, my girl will have something to wear on her legs besides undergarments and a skirt that's way too big. My TTYA order finally came in and I'm going to pick it up this evening. Now if I could just manage to fix her bangs properly, that'd be great.
You'll have to customize an MDD DDH01. The outfit can probably be found on Y!JA or Etsy without needing to commission.
There are 5 2hu DD's if its not just your waifu that you're after
Post pics when you get her dressed anon, she's cute!
>I'm not sure what to do about it.
Get some Volks wig mist spray, that made my difficult wig much better.
What would God say about you doing all this? I haven't seen enough to understand all this properly yet.
I think the more your dolly means to you, the worse it probably is. How much do they mean to you all?
God wouldn't give too much of a shit considering the number of messed up and harmful things in our wonderful world. Of course, that's just my guess since I certainly don't know what god would say. Do you know what god would say, anon? You seem very confident.
But never mind god. What I say is that I make my money selling shit on ebay since normal businesses rejected me during my job hunt after college. Just an awkward little guy who stutters too much that no one wants to hire. But I rolled with it. Up until this point I've sold over 10 million USD worth of merchandise online already. Hilariously enough some of the companies that rejected me years ago have closed down during the economy down turn from years ago. I cackle like a hyena every time I drive past those empty office buildings. So I don't know about god, but I say, fuck it, if I want to buy a $600 dress for a tiny plastic girl and put her in a fancy glass cabinet and dote on her once in a while, that's my money and my business.
>I've sold over 10 million USD worth of merchandise online
give me some of that
i guess it's okay, then.
Thanks. I'd definitely make my doll pretend to drink doll-sized tea with your dolls, too.
I haven't used any product yet. Her wig was a mess again right after I moved her probably because of that, but brushing it is fun so I don't mind.
When she's tangled or has flyaways, spray mist while holding a few inches away from wig. Don't need to soak it, just a light spray is enough for most. It helps detangle and smooth the fibers.
Similar purpose as mist, but in a different form. I like to apply it to my hands, a few drops is enough, and rub hands together to spread it and warm it a bit. Then gently comb fingers through her wig, starting at bottom and working way up. When there's barely any left on your fingers, gently smooth the top to prevent flyaway bangs. This is also great for loose curls because you can gently twist after combing and form the curls back into shape.
This is for actual styling, works best on bangs, antennae curls, and tips of ponytails. Spread a small bit onto your finger tips and smooth/shape areas needed. Its water based, so if its too thick you can dip your coated fingers into warm water and then re-spread it across fingers to mix it in. Its also easy to wash out this way.
If used often, you may end up with a buildup (especially the wax and oil) so you may need to wash the wigs at that point. If its a regular wig with no attached parts (Sabers bun, for example) you can wash it in warm water using either gentle dish soap or a proper wig shampoo that some beauty supplies and wig shops have. Rinse well with warm-to-cool water, spritz with the wig spray, gently detangle with a wide tooth comb, and allow to air dry with a balled up paper towel in the cap to keep its shape.
I meant laundry detergent. Gentler on it. You can also use liquid fabric softener as a wig conditioner, but use very very diluted or your doll will be kind of greasy and meadow fresh scent for months.
Thank you, this is really helpful. After a lot of googling I sort of knew vaguely how to use each product, but I could never actually find detailed instructions to confirm.
Man this thread is completely lifeless without me around. I got a lifetime b& for cp, thing is it was my dolls so someone's let a tumblrina into the moderation team. Posting from my phone is difficult due to third-world infrastructure (thanks Turnbull) but I'll try my best to continue providing high-quality content.
I'll probably (definitely) never have a daughter. Would a doll be a good alternative?
Tried twice, got ignored. Despite making a well written appeal and leaving my own email, not so much as a "lol no" reply. Quality administration team.
So I turned ads off when lurking and started using my phone to post.
Yes. They are cute and lovable and you can dress them up how you like and they will never use you as a credit card or sneak out at night to burn coal!
Honestly I don't remember exactly what I posted but I know it wasn't nude because I don't upload those and I have never taken a doll photo with any part of me in it besides my face.
Sounds good to me
Daughters are precious, you shouldn't give them away
The dressing up part is one of the things I really like. I imagine it's just as expensive as in real life though.
If we're getting technical she's on a Parabox 40cm body. Believe it or not the only major difference between the Parabox 40 and Obitsu 50 is about 10cm of height; the internal ball joints are the same, just less distance between them.
Oh, really? I didn't realise you swapped her body out. If you showed her with your megucas I might have, but Mei seems to be your slave that you keep in isolation and force to do lewd things.
Well she is my favourite and until Kanojo came along the rarest so she always got special attention. Her original body had some issues which brought about a decision to replace it. I decided to try her on a 40cm body and haven't looked back since. I fell completely in love with her, she's just the cutest little thing.
If I have enough satellite coverage to post tomorrow I'll take a photo of her with Kanojonee-chan. At the moment it takes about 20 attempts to keep a connection the whole way through the posting process.
Fuck. I'm supposed to be saving money for college, but I just want to buy nice things for my doll. She needs more clothes, and she deserves real furniture! Or at least a blanket.
I don't take photos nearly often enough so i ran out. have mandarake's terrible picture of a photograph of what my girl apparently used to look like. I still don't know if it's from a previous owner, or the faceup artist, or what. The head came with a slip of paper with a Japanese doll blog on it, but I couldn't really figure out why.
They look like TTYA's, but I didn't know they fit the Dynamite body. The jeans I got are really tight on a normal DD's thighs, and I imagine they're made out of the same stuff.
Speaking of TTYA, I'm a little bit annoyed by them. I bought a pair of shorts from the, and the colour is so different from what was advertised.
Clean waistline? You mean that there's no seam there? Because they make one piece shapely bust DDs now. Without seeing her butt or underbust, I can't tell for sure which one she has.
Sweet! I'm looking for a pair for a DD anyway. Mind posting a picture of what you got?
It's not a DDdy body, it's a DD3 body with a shapely L unitorso. The shorts are from TTYA indeed.
For future reference, DDdy has a round navel and a wider waist.
Actually I'm an idiot and didn't realise that I could just plug the camera into my computer. The photo really isn't worth the wait but here it is anyway. I really need to work on standing poses.
Got a dds with a single piece torso M and ddh 6&4 heads. Also a sharp ĺ torso
Now my obitsu has a sister!
But man, I got a lot of face ups to catch up on since I retired my old obitsu head
Nice! Excited to see what they look like with their face ups and wigs (and eyes of course), good luck!
Did you get that shirt from Etsy? It looks like cakes shirt before I added the oneup.
My photo backgrounds are so playful and rich in color.
I thought i would be safe to put on stockings on to see how it looks and take it off right after, but it stained the thigh a little. i literally put it on and looked at it for 5 sec and tool it off
I certainly wouldn't.
Try washing dark clothes in a lingerie bag in your washer using a program for delicates. I've had next to no problems since I started doing this. There's a guide over at mfc somewhere.
maybe it would help a little bit with staining, but you'll still get stains. and then when you get rid of those stains you'd just have to spray it again, so i'm not sure that's worth it. also you can't just use any topcoat on DDs but you probably know that.
did you test the stockings before you put them on? i check to see if clothes get any dye on my hands, then if i don't see any then i'll rub it on the bottom of my doll's foot a little. if dye comes off with either of those checks you should soak it in water for a bit.
somebody made a pretty big tutorial here
Sadly I am not sure. This skirt is part of the Volks 2014 "Going on a Date Feminine Style Set" Waffles wears the top right now.
As for stockings. I have had luck with a white stockings under striped stockings. I doubt it will work as good with black ones though.
Damn, thanks for the heads up on the deal. No suggestions, sorry, but cute pics I can do.
Not to be mean but that head rotation on that neck looks painful.
>Not to be mean but that head rotation on that neck looks painful.
We'll try to do better next time, anon.
it did look a little unnatural. From an artistic perspective, rotations like that should follow through more with the rest of the body as well. Rarely do body parts move and rotate on their own.
I feel bad now, but I figured if you're new to photographing your girl it'd be better to say. That aside, she's absolutely lovely.
Yup, exactly this.
>I feel bad now
Don't, I do welcome constructive criticism, I was mostly jesting. I'm not entirely new to photography but I'm definitely still learning!
Did I do good?
This is my second faceup
Also should I put under eyelashes or does look fine without it?
I'd rotate the image before posting it, but...looks nice. I'm not experienced in faceups but I'm excited to see it more finished (assuming it isn't). I wouldn't add eyelashes but that's my personal taste.
Really good for being your 2nd faceup, I'm impressed. Eyelashes are situational on DDs imo but I don't have a creative bone in my body so I can't tell how it will be in this case before seeing it.
All of his posts reach that level of weird, or more.
He's got maybe... $20k in dolls and all of the posts are these crappy cell phone pics of him patting them on the head and "picture stories"
This is why people dislike Danny Choo. He encourages behavior like that.
Damn. If you were willing to do it for people in the US that would be such a good deal. Canada is one of the few places where the USD goes a long way. I love ordering stuff from Canada for that reason.
the Canadian to US conversion is so bah in my side, at least when I'm ordering stuff
I just ordered wigs from leeke world, it was $88usd, but in Can its $115. it hurts
I'd consider it as well but considering I'm a ~16 hrs drive away that's not going to happen if it's not through the USPS.
Why didn't I just ignore the link? This shit is horrible.
These dolls look even worse off. How do you think that these faceups are ok?
They're so uneven and heavy-handed. Even though he uh, cares too much for his dolls or whatever, he doesn't seem to give a shit about actually making them look pretty.
this makes me feel like a professional
I don't understand the people that call this good, also praising the person who did it
That's really helpful; I've been interested in doing my own faceups but wasn't sure what I could do to practice. I guess I'll try to get good at drawing small stuff before going any further.
That's why people are giving you so much praise. The US doll community is rife with tumblr-tier pillow soft commentary. Just look at Den of Angels. The biggest BJD community and no one offers any constructive criticism for fear of getting banned by their crazy mods.
But anon's faceup does look good so far. Obviously we can't judge it as a whole with only the eyelashes on there, but the eyelashes don't look like horseshit so that's what we're judging.
Oh he's wonderfully talented, no doubt. I should have said that our surprise (not our praise) is due to the large amount of shit faceups in the BJD community. Faceup anon truly deserves all the kind words.
I mean, only your second faceup and it's that good... just mind boggling
Nah. 4chan is just about the only place where people are honest about how a doll looks.
I have a DoA account in case I decide to use the MP one day. But aside from that, all my doll talk is done here. I can't stand the creepy environment over there.
A few threads ago we had a discussion about eyelashes on DDs
It's tough to pull off, but it can be done and look really classy. Just found this example.
its actually done by water color pencils. its easier to work with compared to acrylic, you can just erase it with an eraser if you make a mistake
I haven't tried pastel for eyebrows yet, so i can't say anything on that
Absolutely horrifying. Actually appropriate for halloween
when I put her eyes in, my heart just melted
those eyes were took a while to put in because of obitsu's newer doll heads have eye pockets instead of using eye putty and the eyes I have is a bit big for it
You know what, originally there was meant to be another doll with a battle axe. An unfortunate accident with the idiot and her new flail has resulted in, well, only two dolls being featured in these pictures.
Really looking forward to receiving my Sheryl now, owner pics have started showing up!
I've tried changing bust as a fun thing, having a flat girl suddenly with tits that can be squeezed or placed in a revealing outfit. It feels like they're still the same girl, just now with a bigger chest.
Eye changing is done when I'm tired of the way a doll looks and wants to change their character. I don't do it as much.
I change eyes and wigs all the time in order to see if it suits them better. Bust size I only change if I want to try on an outfit that doesn't fit with the current bust, I guess I consider the bust part of the character.
