“You don’t think I’m an everyman, that’s it right!”
“I just walked in the door, why don’t we introduce ourselves.” said Lipsky.
ayy
“No, I can see it, you think I’m a Hollywood jerk!” raged David "Career Move" Wallace
At this point David Lipsky was afraid for his life but knew this would be the interview of the decade.
“Ah, about the ontological themes in your opus Infinite Jest, I wonder-”
“If we ate like this all the time what would be the problem?” interjected Wallace. There was no food or drink in sight. Lipsky looked at him perplexed.
Wallace was now doing a hoedown dance in the middle of the room, stomping his feet and whooping in a loud voice. “I’m a regular dude!” he bellowed. “I don’t care about fame! I cherish my regular guyness!”
“Did I mention I own two dogs and drink diet coke?” said Wallace.
Lipsky cast his gaze around the warm, dirty living room. There were heaps of empty diet coke cans everywhere and beach towels used as curtains on the windows. The words “I am a regular guy. Fame doesn’t bother me. I cherish my regular guyness and drink diet coke” were etched into the coffee table in a crude script.
“Hey, let’s go get some dirty Nebraskan pussy at the hoedown!” exclaimed Wallace. “Oh, you’re gay? I know a megachurch we could huff paint in then burn down. Did I mention I named my book after a line in Hamlet? It fucking sucks being rich and white, that’s what it’s about. That’s all brown people want to read about, attractive wealthy people wringing their hands over our futility of it all. This is off the record right?”
Lipsky was appalled at David’s behavior. He contemplated getting up and leaving but Wallace was blocking the door with his large frame.
“Hey I know, let’s get your girlfriend on the horn. It’s only 3am in New York .”
Lipsky was terrified at this point and surrendered his girlfriend’s phone number.

58 KB,
I became an avid reader like three months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time on 4chan anymore.

Here's how I did it.

-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person

-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure

-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult...

Basically anything Ambient (the genre, not like sounds of the Amazon or whatever) or IDM. Try Brian Eno (Music for Airports and Music for Film are good albums), Boards of Canada (Music Has the Right to Children and Campfire Headphase are my favorite albums of theirs), or the One on Twoism series (various artists, Volume I is my favorite) are worth checking out.

Also just start looking into "classical" composers and the like and see who you enjoy. Béla Bartók, Aram Khatchaturian, and Sergei Rachmaninoff...

No, just no. Classical requires a larger amount of concentration than any other type of music. You can do whatever you want but don't pretend you can retain anything from both mediums when listening and reading at the same time. Unless it's something you've listened a hundred times then I don't...

I'm really sick of this response. Obviously you aren't listening to the music in the same you would as if you were just listening to it alone. It is perfectly ok to use it as background music while reading. It should also be listened to by itself, but there is nothing wrong with having it in the background while you read.

You're never going to convince anyone of anything with that mindset. Try considering what it is about Green that she, and so many other people, like--you know, empathize with her and whatnot. That usually helps.

368 KB,
Let's talk about Kafka.

I've just finished Das Schloss, in German which is my mother tongue, and liked it, although it was, partly, an exhausting read. Somehow, his prose is awkward and clumsy yet at the same time very beautiful to read. It took about 100 pages, though, until the atmosphere really got me. My favorite scene was the one in which he is in Bürgels office.

What should I read next? I already read and somewhat, but not as much as Das Schloss, liked Die Verwandlung, and some short stories, e.g. Ein Hungerkünstler.

>Somehow, his prose is awkward and clumsy yet at the same time very beautiful to read

I cant read German but they say that his prose is modeled off of legal works and bureaucratic paperwork type stuff. In English his work can be awkward or stiff but I think that is what gives it its character, there is nothing like it that I have ever read. I think his very short works, like the paragraph or page length work, is his best.

How important is human experience to a writer? Is it more important than study of literature?
In his TV interview Borges states that the goal of a writer lies in describing and transforming the reality around him into beautiful, memorable forms, but the man himself had objectively spent his entire life in academic circles, reading fucking books all day long, what could he possibly tell me that I couldn't get myself had I picked the same tomes?

Can anything else give me the same sense of a classic adventure story? This novel was just perfect for what it was and I'm having a hard time finding anything else like it.

Other adventure novels like this usually have a protagonist that is too smart, witty, charming, lucky, etc. I loved in Shogun how the protagonist was just a fish out of water doing whatever he could to survive.

Does anybody have any recommendations? It doesn't have to be historical fiction, set in Japan, etc. I just want to read an easy, sprawling page turning adventure story.

Fair enough. My best guess is that it's describing two drunk men stumbling about near the seafront, who then enter a pub that's still open. One of them was telling a long rambling story, and they've just met someone who's likely to do the same thing.

I don't even have literature classes, I'm just curious to see what different people read into the exact same text.
