Juan Garcia Madero wrote the whole novel. He was following his heroes and writing about them, thinking they would do something great but they ended up doing nothing particularly relevant to literature. Madero himself is an unknown, as described by the so called "expert" despite hos novel being the only relevant work on the movement.

Also, taking into account the second part starts and ends in the sane section and date, the novel is technically in chronological order.

If you place the third part...

Have you read Amuleto?

It's Auxilio's part of the history where she was trapped inside UNAM's bathrooms during the forced occupation of the school by the military.

I don't think the Savage Detectives is about unfulfilled potential, I think it's about growing up andr ealizing that you cannot win all the battles life...

Have not read amuleto actually. Just SD, some of his poetry, and currently on the part of the crimes in 2666.

The reason I feel the novel is about unfullfilled potential is how the whole second part follows all the characters in their club of visceral realists and none of them ever create the literary revolution they wanted to create. Some get lost in personal life, some are tied up by economic or family problema, one is even killed before as a young man. The two who remained the most true to the literary lifestyle...

Is there anything spiritual (or "mystic") to be found in computer programming?

Anybody has references along those lines?

No, there isn't. But there's something mystic about a hypothetical automatic theorem proving program that will be able to solve, on its own, conjectures never solved before, even by prodigy mathematicians. Many AI experts swear by it, saying that it is an inevitability, that "it is not a matter of *how* but *when*" and other type of similar bullshit. They only think this because they were raised and grew up reading sci-fi novels that let their imagination run wild, so naturally, they cling and latch onto various improbable, apocalyptic even (strong AI etc....

I tried browsing Goodreads (god knows why), but most of their suggestions were shit.

I'm in the mood for some post apocalyptic stories, but I'm more interested in the setting than the apocalyptic event itself. I've read The Road and some other less relevant works, but never really explored the genre much.

I like the idea of a person/ground/community trying to survive in this PA world. "The Book of Eli" setting is a good example of what I'm after.

I'm going to buy "Metro 2033". Are "I am Legend", "Emergence",...

I'm setting up a Call of Cthulhu game and I'm reading through Lovecraft's entire collection in order to get some inspiration.

Now that I'm almost done reading the book I'm left wondering what else could I read that, might help me work on the story and setting.

William Hope Hodgson's The House On The Borderland is another piece of cosmic horror, the most well-known in the niche outside of Lovecraft. For a crude idea of what it's like, imagine an old timey Evil Dead meets the end of the world.

Then there are Lovecraft's peers, Robert E Howard being the most famous. He uses Lovecraftian elements (first person narrators, bookish protagonists, forbidden tomes of knowledge) while being more action-oriented e.g. The Black Stone, The Children Of The Night....

Why are there so many people saying the King James Bible is bad? It's a lot more accurate than translations like "the Message" or the NIV. Sure, there are more accurate translations (but not a ton, I haven't found any translations besides Young's Literal and the KJV that actually translate Mark's common use of present tense as such), but most popular translations are not more accurate. Where the King James Bible has errors, they are errors out of accident, whereas many modern Bibles intentionally distort the translation and corrupt Hebrew idiom...

the notion exists but is it judgement and is it divine

non existence of free will does not mean someone else is doing the things that could be judged
nor does it mean that the person that lacks free will cannot foresee the immediate consequences of his non-free will-ness
one can pretend in the knowledge of not being aware or be aware and resign to the fact that the end is set in motion long ago

I have a question though. What is everyone's opinion on listening to audiobooks? I find that with 3 children, including a nine month old, and a demanding job requiring 12 hour days, that i can find little time to read these days. I spend about 2.5 hours on the road commuting to work and back and usually spend this time listening to sci-fi for the entertainment value. Is there any issue listening to literary fiction? Would it really be a detriment to my comprehension?

Should we worry about reading speed?

I took some phony test a couple days ago, and it said that I read at 250wpm, with a comprehension rate of 100%, of which was barely above average, even bordering painfully average. It took me around five days to finish Siddhartha, reading for about an hour a day, and about the same time span to read Candide.

I just picked up a copy of Karamazov; how many eons will it take for me to read this masterpiece? Should I even bother?

Here's the test I mentioned: http://www.readingsoft.com

1. its not a race
2. youll find your reading speed will improve dramatically on its own without any special effort from you as long as you keep reading consistently and naturally at whatever pace is comfortable right now
3. do not fall into the trap of speedreading/skimming

i understand it's hard and it's easy to get impatient, but if you just stick at it for even a few weeks you'll see noticeable improvements.

I don't think it's important. If you enjoy reading what's the problem? Some people can read 100 pages in an hour and just read an hour a day because they think that's enough, while you could read 90 pages in 3 hours. If you're enjoying it, what's the deal?
I'm an average or very slow reader. I get about 30 pages in a hour or so. I wish I could read faster so I could read more books and shit, but I guess time will tell if I can or not.

How does /lit/ feel about Paolini's Inheritance Cycle?
9 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
He published too young. If he had waited until he was more mature and more developed as a write it could have been pretty good. As it stands it's a generic fantasy series that I have fond memories of because I was a teenager when I first read it.
>>
It's better than Sword of Truth and shorter than Wheel of Time, that's about all I can say for it.
>>
>>8503025

I started reading it knowing that it was mostly regarded as trash. I have a soft spot for such fantasy though, and I eagerly read the six first Wheel of Time books and enjoyed them (mostly) even though they're, I suppose, fairly generic.

Fuckin' Paolini though... I had to drop the book after 150-200 pages. I rarely quit books, but it was just bad, predictable, uninteresting and generally boring.

>>8503032

Sword of Truth, at least the first few books, has some interesting ideas. Inheritance is the worst kind of generic.
