how much credit do you give middle schoolers (6-8 grade) when it comes to "understanding lit"?

i've met people who think that it's kind of a waste to give a lot of the canon/classics because they just won't get it. that they're still at the level of not being able to read past pure plot. but there are some pretty accessible/basic classics out there that won't turn them off reading immediately because it's so dated (e.g. Dickens)

i've been tasked with coming up with a reading list for middle schoolers and i'm thinking...

if you want actual recent ya i read "peak" by roland smith last year and it wasn't intolerable (i'm a climber and my friend is a middle school teacher and he asked me to do a presentation about mountaineering because his class was reading it)

>>8412688

it's a supplementary reading list for an after-school/tutoring thing. i've seen some of their syllabuses. some teachers spend one semester reading one book as a class and that didn't seem like enough so i was told to just come up with a list these kids read more than one book in the semester

The problem in my case were the shitty professors I had, they were the ones who couldn't read past plot and trasmitted that to their students.

I don't know how things are in the US, but I think that the problem here in my country is Middle School Literature being too centered in just reading books and not in how to actually read them (books in general).

And I find selections 1 and 7 to be too childish for Middle School level, the rest are fine (except for Hitchhiker's, it's a cool book you could recommend to a middle schooler but it's pretty...

Norm Macdonald always struck me as a highly intelligent person who played dumb to fuck with me, and not just in the sense to play it for laughs, but that his whole personality is a fabrication and if he ever revealed his true self it would be frightening.

Hey guys,

Recently I've been thinking about trying to (re)learn Albanian and got to wondering about the optimal way or 'method' of learning any language (If there exists some general rule that is).

If by miracle any of you know the best way to learn Albanian hit me up please.

Why don't writers or publishers reboot or remake novels? I would love to see something like Don Quixote but with easier to read language or even be set in modern times. They could do it like Hollywood and even insert female characters into traditionally male roles. Who says King Arthur couldn't be a Queen?

Currently smack dab in the middle of Les Misérables and really enjoying it, it's packed with unique and interesting characters, has some interesting philosophic ideas (even if I don't really agree with everything he says), and is full of so much detail it really manages to make the everyday life of some priest as epic in scope as the entire revolution. But if you don't like long sections of history you might get bored as Hugo frequently intersects long essays on French history within the plot. I was not expecting there to be an essay on the faults and pros of...

Japan is literally still suffering from PTSD on a national scale. OPs pic is just a symptom. The drawing inward of the hikkimorri and salarymen, the catastrophic decline in "3d" sexuality and birthrates and its replacement by DS games and robots, its pathetic acceptance of the early 90s economic crash, its halfhearted attempts at rearmament... 458 KB,
Dear /lit/,

I'm going to be a MA student come September, (studying English lit, linguistics & civilisation) and I'm starting to think about ideas for a topic for my Master's thesis. I'll be specialising on Irish studies so I was considering something along the lines of cultural appropriation of Irish writers by the UK (just an idea, I would probably have to make the topic much more specific than this)

Do you think it would make a nice subject to work on / an interesting subject for my fellow students to hear about?
Or is it absolute rubbish?...

>>
>>8412015
Haven't chosen anything yet, actually the first year is pretty much dedicated to finding a topic to write a thesis about. Usually we only start writing properly towards the end of the first year/beginning of the second as the thesis is due after two years of research.
At the end of the first year we need to write a report on 3 articles in order to build towards the problematic of our 2nd year's thesis.

Anyway, philology sure sounds extremely interesting but I'm fearing it might be too ambitious...

So many passages were orders of magnitude more obtuse before I realised that the reason he seems to be harping on some aspect of his argumentation so repetitively is that it's completely contrary to Hume and Locke, or to contemporary assumptions. It was a tangible difference. Before, I felt like I was constantly groping, but not it's relatively easy, aside from the parts where...

Hume - you can read the treatise or the enquiry concerning human understanding
Descartes - Meditations

you can pretty much get by with just that; Kant defines all the special terms he uses so it's not an impossible task to follow him with not much precursors, you just want to get an idea of the sort of traditions of thought he's responding to.

>There can be little doubt that Nietzsche is the most important figure in modern atheism, but you would never know it from reading the current crop of unbelievers, who rarely cite his arguments or even mention him. Today’s atheists cultivate a broad ignorance of the history of the ideas they fervently preach, and there are many reasons why they might prefer that the 19th-century German thinker be consigned to the memory hole. With few exceptions, contemporary atheists are earnest and militant liberals. Awkwardly, Nietzsche pointed out that liberal values...

What if Sisyphus is actually sad, and the banal struggle doesn't fill his heart?

Is Camus inviting us to be dismiss Sisyphus's misfortune and not feel any sympathy for Sisyphus so that we feel good about ourselves?

We can choose to imagine that someone is happy, but in reality they might be deeply unhappy. It's hard to imagine someone is happy rolling a boulder for eternity, and I'm sure that Sisyphus is depressed and wouldn't like what Camus is telling us to imagine about him. :(

Literature is the creation of a narrative through the arrangement of words.

Typography is the creation of art through the arrangement of words.

My question is: does anyone know of a work that utilizes both? A piece of literature that utilizes a traditional narrative but enhances it with typography techniques such as utilization of white space, different font sizes, intentional omission of words, intentional duplications, non linear text, etc...?

I've read "Snowcrash", "The Diamond Age" and "Cryptonomicon", in that order. I'm used to Mr. Stephenson's rubbing his reader's face in "lel so random" factoids (e.g. The Agent and its use as a term in fencing) and other unappealing features of his writing. I'm finding that I have no desire to continue with "Seveneves" early on in the book (the world leaders just announced the predicted end of the world at Crater Lake).

It's well written and all, but it's graceless. It just feels like the author cares more about "exploring the great issues of modern American life" or some crap that impresses critics than about writing something unique and entertaining. I hear it's much worse in Freedom.
