Anyone up for a discussion on lgbt characters in books? Characters we assume are gay, homoerotic subtext in books, books about same gender romance, maybe some gender related stuff, etc.

I'm trying to get into pre-20th century works with lesbian themes myself. I'm bored of everything gay being post-1960s.

Can anybody redpill me on Terry Pratchett's Discworld series?

It recently came to my attention that my mother was a big fan of the series, despite her apparent disdain for most fantasy. She never understood the popularity of the Tolkien fantasy universe, or why harry potter was as big as it was, etc. which is just confusing to me now that I have learnt this.

From my understanding, the series is more comedy focused? Though the fantastical elements seem pretty 'out-there'. Am I alone in seeing this as strange?

Started as a straightforward parody of D&D-style generic fantasy, developed its own setting, still with lots of comedy and genre parody. Sense of humour is a lot like Douglas Adams but with more heart and less brain.
>>
>>8410599
The redpill is accepting that it gets samey after two or three books, specially between same protagonist entries.

Rincewind in Australia. Rincewind in China. The Egypt one lacked Rincewind, but it could have been Rincewind There too.

Still entertaining overall I guess.
>>
You should read the first few, they're decent (for comedic fantasy). It gets a little stale later but it's a fun ride at first.

Is LoTR worth reading if I don't give a shit about high fantasy like dwarves and elves? I heard the books are pretty good as explorations of good vs evil.

So, yesterday I ordered the Camp of Saints by this old salty fuck here. I picked up the name somewhere here, and just ordered it without further research.

Now that it's on its way to me I looked up some reviews and it seems that it's far more controversial and allegedly very popular among the neo-right.

I'll still read it but I have to admit that I was kind of shocked to learn that I ordered such a book "by accident".

Anybody read it, or got some stories to share about other rather controversial books?

In stories, I need more goopy darkness and mardigras waterbending shit in life and I've been working on a story with such a thing in them but I was curious what lit might have to say about this. I'm not sure how any of you feel about Avatar the Last Airbender or Korra, but you certainly don't have to have watched those or appreciate them to understand what I'm getting at. I was thinking of a genuine spiritual darkness at the heart of the swamp with songs as a heavy part of their culture. Some songs everyone knows, others are more exclusive to certain kinds...

Moons call and search
Mire moans and turns
The hurt, we first burned
While the surface lurched
For the third person urn
Mora keeps and murmurs
"Drowned notions hold token hunters"
"None die without knowing wonder"
"Nets cast around summer
Close fast without motion hunger"
Dance marches the marsh lunger
Into the madness clasp
Where water claps thunder
Against the leaves of the table king
From the seas of grief lovers
Where day feeds book thumpers
And darkness is an art trumpet
Come to enlarge the heart farcers
With mummer carts and hard arteries
But
She sees martyr cartilage
Seethes with tarter larderies
So water harpies scream heartily
As we howl partingly
The mire guard fiends, gargling
Unleashes the emptiness beneath our feet
At least She sets us free
So does Mora keep

Along the bog and sodden loam
The smell of rot teased my nose
They said I'd know, diseased I've grown
No one told me about the hole
A little cloud to call your own
A void of doubt inside your soul
That won't go out, no matter though
Mora, she weeps with me again
She takes my need, she gives me hints
Yes darkness calls, there's light in it
Do not look down, no look below
Look deeper than the Ocean Throne
Iron and tense, hold your own
Give parting gifts to closest friends
Your family though, they've got to cleanse
The grief and fear, don't let it mold
The witch she keeps, but she is cold
The price is high for letting go
So hug them tight, you never know
The fire's bright, you might come home
By the story that mora wrote
Into the bones beneath our home
There the stony shore sloped to gold
Of summer stars where winter blowed
The lunger there whose seeds we grow
Of the runner and the hunter both

16 replies and 4 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>8410010
Adult fiction is of higher quality than both. Children's is higher quality than YA.
>>
>>8410010
Children's fiction is written for and marketed to children. YA is largely written for mentally and emotionally stunted adults, but also marketed to children who want to feel All Grown Up. Adult fiction is still by and large written for those same mentally and emotionally stunted adults, but isn't marketed to children.

In two days I have a meeting with a (former) senior vice president of a major publisher who is now a full time agent and publisher. He has lots of connections. Just think of it as a slightly less formal job interview, I guess. It might be a hard sell if all you have is an outline, unless your friend really has a lot of sway with this guy. When it comes to fiction, especially if you're unpublished, agents want a finished manuscript.

But again, the type of meeting you're describing isn't the normal process, so you might have a significantly...

Brave Matthew Zeus
A Short Story
by dude

Matthew Zeus had always hated damp Upper Boggington with its vivacious, vague volcanoes. It was a place where he felt puzzled.

He was a brave, gracious, whiskey drinker with hairy abs and beautiful hands. His friends saw him as a putrid, puny painter. Once, he had even jumped into a river and saved a gleaming old lady. That's the sort of man he was.

Matthew walked over to the window and reflected on his magical surroundings. The wind blew like shouting snakes.

Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Suzanne Snozcumber. Suzanne was a cold-blooded coward with chubby abs and short hands.

Matthew gulped. He was not prepared for Suzanne.

As Matthew stepped outside and Suzanne came closer, he could see the wrong glint in her eye.

Suzanne gazed with the affection of 142 loving panicky pigeons. She said, in hushed tones, "I love you and I want love."

Matthew looked back, even more puzzled and still fingering the tattered record. "Suzanne, what's up Doc," he replied.

They looked at each other with lonely feelings, like two handsome, happy horses bouncing at a very modest birthday party, which had indie music playing in the background and two cowardly uncles gyrating to the beat.

Matthew studied Suzanne's chubby abs and short hands. Eventually, he took a deep breath. "I'm sorry," began Matthew in apologetic tones, "but I don't feel the same way, and I never will. I just don't love you Suzanne."

Suzanne looked irritable, her emotions raw like a spilt, squashed sandwich.

Matthew could actually hear Suzanne's emotions shatter into 7919 pieces. Then the cold-blooded coward hurried away into the distance.

Not even a glass of whiskey would calm Matthew's nerves tonight.
THE END
