Any good books or resources for learning about japanese history? Not a weeb, but I've been reading a lot of japanese authors lately and it's inspired me to learn at least a bit about the country and cultural practices so that I'm not totally lost when they describe architecture and cultural practices. Any help would be appreciated

Incredibly broad question, I'm not sure exactly what you're after. The Cambridge history of Japan is good for sort of 1700s-present. If you want to read anything about pre 1700s Japan, you need to cross over into Chinese history, because that's before they split.

On that scale? The only thing that feels similar tonally (that is, with a coexisting fascination with art, violence, history, and posterity) is Underworld by DD.

Some of W.G. Sebald with the drifting stories and what not.

However, there is seldom few that come close to matching the perfection of 2666. I know because I've been searching for years since I finished it.

Can we talk about Harry Potter please?

It still astounds me how great the Harry Potter books were.

JRR Tolkien set his stories in a fictional universe.
Philip Pullman set his stories in an alternate universe.

But JK Rowling set her stories in the human universe albeit with the world of magic co-existing alongside in secret. It's an amazing accomplishment. The fact that while reading we don't have to simply leave this reality an invest in another, we can just believe that somewhere out there people just like us pretty much are flying on brooms,...

I think the Idiot is great as is all of Dostos primary works. It's a lot more light and gets a bit romcom towards the end but Myshkin's purity and his interactions with other characters really make the book. The part where Myshkin is talking about his viewing of an execution is one of my favorite moments in any Dosto book.

Specifically pic related and The Pale King.

Will TPK make me want to hit my head against the wall when I finish it due to it being an unfinished book, or does the book have an adequate ending (if you could call it that, as Infinite Jest didn't really have one either)?

To be honest I think Oblivion and The Pale King contain his best pieces. They are far better than Infinite Jest. I do not hold The Pale King in high regard however.

Hi OP, I think I can help you out. I'm almost done pic related and read TPK earlier this year. TPK is weird because there are some stretches where his writing is as good as I've read and others that probably wouldn't have or shouldn't have made it past a regular editing process. The ending just feels premature, which is expected. Worth the read if you like DFW.
Oblivion is not bad overall but only Good Old Neon really got to me. I'm on the last story, which is really like a novella. Again worth it if you already like DFW.

Who here /necessitarian/?
'Possibility' properly relates only to subjective and falliable human certainty and to nothing else- not to some worthless, meaningless ghostly 'multiple true future states of affairs', nor to a supposed and perpetually disproven 'lack of a true future state of affairs'. Further, those who maintain otherwise insult the Divine Sovereignity, and are in fact crypto-polytheists and idolaters, not true monotheists.

>>8783045
So when can something be said to be true? Only when it has happened?
>>
>>8783055
I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Put simply, there is always one true future state of affairs [for, say, a year from now]. This state of affairs is not infallibly known by humans, and so cannot be infallibly asserted to be true. But it is true regardless, since it will come to pass.
>>
>>8783088

But because humans have free will, though we agree only one future state can occur, it is not set in stone, because a person has a choice, whether to do this or this or this or this or this or that, right now the future in which one of those thises was the one chosen does not exist, because humans have the ability to choose out of multiple choices, the future is crafted by choice.

Get a Kindle Paperwhite & read the sticky for how to get books. High upfront cost, but it will pay for itself in a few months if you actually read. I also read physical books, pdfs on my computer, etc. People argue this topic endlessly, but to me it doesn't really matter.

Given the choice, I would read on my kindle. Several reasons:

1. backlit
2. tap to define words
3. easier to hold & manipulate in hand than any book over 300 pgs.

Comes down to personal preference.
>>
>>8783011
In all honesty, I enjoy reading physical books WAAAAAAAY more. I always buy them in second-hand bookstores so they are always very cheap.
Although I don't like much reading e-books, sometimes I do read them in my phone or in my computer, because they have undeniable advantages, like being free, being able to take with you in your phone several books at once, not needing a font of light to read, etc, so I don't know, maybe try reading few books on Kindle App for your cellhpone, you can find several free books, if you feel comfortable, I guess go for the an e-reader,

All the women that I've met that's even heard of these works, have only watched the movies.

Not to say that they aren't capable of understanding the prose, but films are marketed in such a way that entices them into submission in a way that only a woman could fall under.

Hi. I'm going to write a story about a guy that's been a depressed robot for a few years who meets a failed normie 17/18 year old girl who's mentally ill and has abusive parents. I kind of want to give the robot an illness that he hides from the girl and he kinda helps her out with getting a Chad that she's liked for a while and living a normal life despite it hurting him because he likes her.

Sounds good? What could make it more dramatic?

14 KB,
This was a super comfy read and has seemingly countless quotable lines desu. Anyone else read this/other stuff by Maugham?

Recommended if you like books about art/artists/literature, deadpan humor about upper/upper-middle class society, and surprising moments of elegance and insight desu. Based on the life of Paul Gauguin.

(don't tell /pol/ but it's also redpilled af)

>“The faculty for myth is innate in the human race. It seizes with avidity upon any incidents, surprising or mysterious, in the career of those who have at all distinguished themselves from their fellows, and invents a legend to which it then attaches a fanatical belief. It is the protest of romance against the commonplace of life.”

>“She had a real passion for reading (rare in her kind, who for the most part are more interested in the author than in his books, in the painter than in his pictures)…”

>“Why do nice women marry dull men?”
>“Because intelligent men won’t marry nice women.”

>“It requires the feminine temperament to repeat the same thing three time with unabated zest.”

>“Why should you think that beauty, which is the most precious thing in the world, lies like a stone on the beach for the careless passer-by to pick up idly? Beauty is something wonderful and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul. And when he has made it, it is not given to all to know it. To recognize it you must repeat the adventure of the artist. It is a melody that he sings to you, and to hear it again in your own heart you want knowledge and sensitiveness and imagination.”

>“Each one of us is alone in the world. He is shut in a tower of brass, and can communicate with his fellows only by signs, and the signs have no common value, so that their sense if vague and uncertain. We seek pitifully to convey to others the treasures of our heart, but they have not the power to accept them, and so we go lonely, side by side but not together, unable to know our fellows and unknown by them. We are like people living in a country whose language they know so little that, with all manner of beautiful and profound things to say, they are condemned to the banalities of the conversation manual. Their brain is seething with ideas, and they can only tell you that the umbrella of the gardener’s aunt is in the house.”

I could seriously fill up an entire thread with lines from this book desu.

The pretentious pseudos on this board shit on him, but he wrote captivating and interesting stories exploring universal aspects of human behavior in specific settings. He was a great storyteller. His short stories are by far his best works, particularly life in English colonial East Asia.

There is a 3 book collection of his short stories that I highly recommend.
