I read it in French despite not being very good at French so I remember very little about it. The subplot about the Autodidact stands out.

Agreed. I read it in French too for the practice, but decided there were better French books to read than that and stopped. The autodidact was the most interesting part of the book. Why is this book so acclaimed?

19 KB,
So, what's the deal with Deleuze?

I've read that you can't understand him without Greeks, Descartes, Hume etc., but also that people who know too much about western philosphy had problems to understand, while people who did not read these understood Capitalism and Schizophrenia perfectly.

So... what is the consensus? Should you read these philosophers whom Deleuze liked and wrote about (Nietzsche, Bergson, Foucault, Spinoza etc.), should you read pre-ancient and forward or should you just jump in?

Horses can't be god
>>
There's no evidence the Turin horse incident happened. It was probably made up to slander him.
It's not only a fraudulent story, but also plagiarism. The same shit happened in Crime and Punishment.
>>
>>8241413

Nietzsche rejected the necessity of salvation but in the end realized that man does not live by bread alone but by the word of God. He tried to become Christ and failed. He realized that he could not even save a single horse, much less all of mankind, and that his writings were nothing but vanity. His madness was profound despair. Rudolph Steiner says that when he went to visit Nietzsche, he had a vision of one of Nietzsche's past lives, in which he was a tortured monk constantly whipping himself.

Yes. Because your brain neither links the dousing yourself in gasoline and lighting a fire to your own death neither does it for getting stabbed in the side.

Try holding your breath until you die. Or drowning yourself in a puddle through sheer will.

That monk died of asphyxiation before he felt the sensation of burning to death. Getting nailed to the cross and speared in the side probably felt horrible although probably good when the body finally gave out.

He writes about how people now are systematically conditioned to be isolated and unfulfilled in life. There's no sense of community, nothing binding us together, nothing beyond ourselves -- we've become a bunch of lonely individuals. I think /pol/ misunderstands him, thinking that because he criticizes the status quo he necessarily agrees with their ridiculous political views.

Because if you speak out against sexual liberation you can only ever be an anti-enlightenment Satan.
It's the biggest ( and maybe only ) victory of the 1960's and thin-skinned boomers can't handle the fact someone offers a convincing critique against their dynamiting of the mores surrounding sexuality and the destruction of the family unit.

Indeed excellent read. It is also important to keep in mind that Dick was bombarded with deadlines, which gave him little time to finish his novels. It's very impressive that he can shit out that novel given that fact, which is probably also why Mercerism wasn't fleshed out. It did make many passages in the book more mysterious, which I appreciated.

Have you seen the movie?

Actually, the book did feel somewhat rushed.
I didn't see it, but I think I'm gonna watch it soon!

It seems that a lot of people think Philip K Dick was criticizing religion with Buster Friendly's announcement , but I feel that he actually raises a point that it is the principles given by Religion that are the most important as shown by Rick's and Isidore's lack of reaction and what Mercer says to Rick .

Moving onto "A Clockwork Orange" now.

How bad are the fire and ice books compared to the show? I really do hate games of thrones, I think it's quite disgusting. But I've noticed when discussing with fans of the books many of the things that I have issues with are only present in the show - according to them at least. Even articles that are critical of the show will often contrast it with the books assessing that the problems they address are not present in the books or they contrast how things were handled and portrayed in both version. The main difference seemingly that there is a purpose and message...

The books put the show to shame. You would not waste your time reading them anon. The show twists the characters to sell to mainstream entertainment, while Martin writes to dwindling fans of written text, not pandering at all. Though he writes a lot about food and fluff, and the sex is more gratuitous than the show, the actual meat and potatoes of the story is much more complex and better in my opinion.
>>
>>8239248
i have only read the first book so i don't have much to go on but overall i'd say the book was better than the show, mainly because you have a window into what characters are thinking when things happen to them or around them.

the prose isn't great, though, and i don't find the characters or story to be interesting at all. but i tend to dislike pretty much everything so...

read the first book. even though it seems long, it's a pretty quick read.
