Just finished watching all of the Getter Robo OVAs. I enjoyed them all, but they felt like they weren't living up to their full potential. They could have been great, but along the way some elements were fucked up and they merely became somewhat decent.
So, /m/, what are your opinions on the Getter Robo OVAs? How would you rank them? What would you like to see if they ever made another one?
SvN would have been god tier if it was, like, five episodes longer. Or if the four episodes were more OVA length.
Armageddon was a blast.
I remain annoyed at New for a lot of reasons (GETTER 1 GETTER 1 GETTER 1 GETTER 1 GETTER 2 GETTER 1), but it wasn't absurdly horrible.
Toei series was good, at least the original was for the half of the show I've seen.
It does have a really good one, but I'm loathe to call it the absolute best. Probably because I hear that damn opening theme in every SRW and they never use the kickass ending theme (IT WAS IN ALPHA 3, WHY DO YOU NOT LET US USE IT?) or any other theme.
Original Gundam actually had a really good soundtrack.
Armageddon: Wasted potential, still has beautiful animation and a great soundtrack
SvN: Excellent but short
New: Good, but lack of budget/episodes to do what they wanted to do
If they ever make another Getter OVA, I'd want it to be more based on the manga story and I'd especially want Jun Kawagoe to have absolutely nothing to do with it. That's the most important thing.
>I'd especially want Jun Kawagoe to have absolutely nothing to do with it.
You praise his works, but you don't want him on another OVA?
He's perfectly capable in adapting manga. See Cyborg 009 2001.
Imagawa is an overrated hack, he just throw absurd plot twists all over the already retarded shitty plot and you hipstor fuckers suck his cock for it.
Giant Robo is shit
Shin Mazinger is shit
the 3 first episodes of Armageddon are shit
get over it
Nice try, but nope.
Well i just finished watching the getter ova's myself, and i havent tried reading the manga yet
I'd say New > Armageddon > NvS
I cant really fault New because i got exactly what i wanted out of it (shouting, manliness, giant robots) and enjoyed every episode from start to finish. The english dub wasnt too bad either (although its till better subbed) and im probably gay for that version of Ryoma
Armageddon had an okay first episode, 2-3 were shit, and afterwards it got steadily better until STONE SUNSHINE. The last few episodes are still great but i dont feel they get any better than that moment.
Neo vs Shin Getter Robo was a a bit goofier than the others but i still enjoyed it a lot. The Getter 3 pilot is my favorite out of all the ones in the OVA's as well. I was pretty disappointed that there was no actual Neo vs Shin fight though, and i thought the show was at its best in the first few minutes (up until the theme song ends, Musashi vs the reptile army was so fucking awesome). The final fight was a bit underwhelming as well. Texas Mack is the best thing about Neo vs Shin though.
Dropping the soap in the prison shower is a huge mistake. Wearing a Klan robe in Harlem is a huge mistake. This guy just watched some cartoons before reading the comic they were loosely based on. He'll be fine.
I didn't enjoy NvS at all, and I'm not sure if it was because I just didn't turn my brain off enough and enjoy giant robots beating up dinosaurs or because I was so focused on the god awful subs that seem to have been written by someone who speaks neither Japanese or English fluently.
>40th anniversary of Getter Robo
>Dino Getter Figures
>Half the year is over
>No new OVA announced
>Mfw this OVA could have been THE ONE
Being a Getter fan is suffering
Armageddon > New > Shin vs. Neo
Armageddon was absolutely fucking fantastic. especially the attacks (STONAAAAAA SUUUUUUUNSHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE)
New was pretty damn decent, but the ending was ech, and they used Getter 1 too much
SvN was pretty boring and compared to the rest
The only thing I really did like about SvN was the fucking Janglish coming from Jack
Yeah, see I just read all the manga, and I can catagorically say this is bullshit. People have been saying this on /m/ forever, and its just not true. Watching one before the other will not inherently make one or the other better or worse. The shows are a mishmash of different stuff from a lot of different aspects of the manga. Its not a big deal, they're different enough it doesn't matter.
>People have been saying this on /m/ forever
No. It's only when Getter Robo Arc (8/22/12) got fully scanlated that people started saying it. Before that, everyone was simply content in watching the ovas first.
>and I can catagorically say this is bullshit
Well then let me tell you why you're an idiot and wrong.
Watching the OVAs before reading the manga is a mistake. Can you do it? Sure. But its undoubtedly better to read the manga first. Why? Because it methodically builds up to the mystery of Getter energy and is the only series with a consistent basis. However, if you watch the OVAs first, you'll completely spoil yourself concerning this aspect of the manga (which is THE biggest plot hook in the actual series) because Kawagoe just liked to throw in a bunch of important scenes from the manga without actually putting them into their context. Watching the OVAs spoils the manga. Simple as that. This is coming from someone who watched the OVAs long before the manga was ever being scanlated. It's as stupid move and I only wish I'd had the privilege of reading the original story first. And yet here you are deny that luxury with your foolishness.
Are there any other mechs out there than can do an Open Get type maneuver? I know the victory gundams can do something similar, but what else? Did Aquarion ever do one?
TL;DR: Read the source material before anything else, especially when it's made by the series' creator.
To be more specific, read Getter Saga before anything else (Getter Anthology doesn't count).
Except you don't really need to read the mangas first, Either starting with the OVA or Mangas is fine.but always recommending an incomplete manga that has no true ending is flawed.
Just like all of you sahibs
Armageddon has a lot of problems with it's story but the execution, the interesting imagery and the bangin music often kept me entertained enough were I could forgive it.
New started great but just felt like it was phoned in later on. And SVN is just good for the opening scene. The rest just felt like a poor man's Getter Go manga.
Armageddon I loved(although it bugged the crap out of me about how weak the Super Robot Army was, and how overpowered the Invaders quickly became), Shin vs Neo started out good, but in my opinion turned to crap once the Shin Getter Robo showed up(not counting the prologue that is), still need to see New Getter Robo
personally if they do another OVA I'd rather they stay as far away from the manga as possible(personally think the Manga is an overrated piece of crap)
That's exactly what I mean. Kind of surprising there aren't more combiners/modular robots that do that.
yep, just that is a mix of many other getter parts (shin1's legs, getter go's arm cannon, dragon's torso and getter 2's drill and claw) instead of just a black getter 1 like the ova. this design comes from the ps1 game getter robo daikessen, which is a SWR game with only getter robo.
i should really start playing this shit, i wonder if an emulator could work
Pretty much this. Then you can watch the OVAs and play the games in any order you want.
Read everything on here in the order that it's listed. Then watch the OVAs.
It's really interesting to see that Gurren Lagann's writer was involved in both Shin Getter Robo and Getter Robo Arc. Especially since GL's second half resembles Shin Getter Robo in many ways.
I came across Armageddon while looking for a sexily animated robot anime. Not only did I get that, but I also discovered a series that was utterly fantastic. Since Armageddon was my gateway it's fucking amazing to me, even though I knew nothing about it. I read up on what it was before watching so I wouldn't be totally lost though, and now I am making my way through the stuff.
Shin vs Neo > Armageddon > New
New is shit but it has the some of the cutest Hayato redesigns.
It's not part of Saga. Besides, Hien's in there as well since the author of that series contributed to the anthology. The only reason that's on there is because that was also completely scanlated at the time.
Speaking of which, here some other Getter Robo Mangas not included in the Saga:
Anyone who wanted to translate from that are free to do so (unless they prefer to find the original copy and scanlate those themselves in high quality HD)
>have to register for a social media site just to download
I wonder if we'll ever get an OVA that gets into how absolutely fucking terrifying Getter is.
Closest we'll probably ever get is that one episode from New which was pretty much taken straight from Shin.
