Hey there. Like I said earlier, I'll be scanning the missing issues of Viz's Area 88 release. I'm about to scan #30, which is the first chapter of Area 88, volume 3 (wideban). I might post some downscaled scans in this thread, for reading purposes. Someone volunteered to clean these scans. The comics are in pretty good condition, actually, which suggests that they've been sitting on a shelf for however many years, untouched. No surprise as to why Viz cancelled it.
Prostrate yourself before the awesome Viz lettering. Note the fine subtleties that are conveyed when a word is randomly on the far left of a bubble.
Editor here, got the mediafire stuff and will be working on it when I'm free later this evening. Scans are looking great.
I'm not going to worry about unflipping the Viz pages, since it's a lot of work to do just to please a few weebs, and it's a moot point once we get wideban scans.
The tif scans are meant for you, which I think are still uploading. These are just a quick downscaled copy for dumping and reading.
Yes. That way it can, at least, be released as a "scanlation" and people can read it. It wouldn't hurt to maybe get some TL-checks, but I'm not counting on that. Haven't even found an interested translator.
RSS for the Mediafire folder is
Which scans will you be using anyway? The public ones that are on nyaa, or you'll just scan the tanks yourself?
>Haven't even found an interested translator.
That sucks. I take asking our local translators or asking in other places isn't advisable, right?
I'll also scan Red Prowling Devil, eventually.
Probably not, these just need some leveling and some dust checks. The later issues have some spreads that might need a little redrawing, though. Didn't look too complicated.
The public ones are 1200px garbage, so I'll scan the widebans myself. This isn't a priority of mine right now, though, so don't hold your breath for weekly releases or something.
You're a god among men, anon.
Does this include the ones they did later that weren't full issues? I forget the details but I think they carried on with area-88 for a bit inside another magazine.
>I take asking our local translators or asking in other places isn't advisable, right?
The length of the remaining volumes + having to consult a military dictionary every so often probably puts them off. I hope that releasing these chapters gets some interest. If all else fails, I can just commission a translation of the next chapter. Dunno how much that'll cost, though.
I don't think I'll be able to find those. They were just printed in some old anime / manga magazine and never recollected. Maybe it's on eBay, who knows.
Until next time. I'll try to scan another issue tomorrow night.
That's okay, at least you're continuing the story a bit.
The bit in >>12231210 >>12231222
confused me - is a translation of the japanese parts being attempted as well? if it is, hunting down the smaller parts is unnecessary anyway.
Whether you're finishing viz or finishing the entire story, thanks again Anon!
also, does anyone know the name of the person who designed the new capcha? It's failed me 10 times now, I'd like to send him on a holiday to Area-88.
I wasn't really sure where to make this thread, but /m/ seems like the perfect combination of /k/, /m/, and aviation/Ace Combat fans. The Ace Combat general is where I see the most Area 88 discussion, funny enough.
you're much better at actually doing things with Area 88 than I am. I've been "going to get" my set from my parents for years but I'm a terrible son and never visit.
Just transplanting the text onto wideban scans and releasing it as a "scanlation", since MU, Batoto, etc. don't allow licensed scans. I'm actually involved with a similar project, for Patlabor.
>is a translation of the japanese parts being attempted as well?
We don't have a translator; right now, the plan is for me to take Viz's translation and put it onto scans of the Japanese wideban release.
Hopefully, begging for a translator will cause someone to come out of the woodwork, but nothing's set in stone yet.
Ah right, sorry, I don't know much about Manga - I just love Area 88! I wish I could direct you to someone who could help translate, but I don't know of anyone. It's always surprised me Area-88 has been so overlooked.
Smaller parts = Area-88 stories that were translated, but released in a magazine with other things instead of as individual Area-88 issues. At least that is how I understand it.
I think yes.
For example, I didn't liked Ace Combat for PC. Seriously, one of the worst console ports ever. Controls are fucked and I can't make my plane turn whereever I want to. That lack of gamer's freedom makes me sick.
And that's too bad that japanese are still sticking to consoles as main platform. I mean, the main reasons are to prevent piracy (reason for developers) and play with someone else on the same screen (reason for console owners), aren't they? Even though PC is superior as a platform (it doesn't have to make AI retarded because of console controls, it is capable of better graphics and larger maps).
I was playing with joystick and it was quite hard to aim my cannon. And these key bindings were changing every ten minutes. And I couldn't dive while being upside-down. Such artificial barriers are killing the fun. I haven't found where to turn them off. And I couldn't bind the engine power to a joystick wheel (or however this thing is called).
Maybe I'm comparing elephant and whale, but War Thunder has much more comfortable controls, which are sometimes doesn't need to change.
This seemed to be pretty interesting, I don't know many more aviation themed manga though. IIRC in one of the /ak/ circlejerks some anon mentioned a manga about a A6M pilot, set of course in WW2.
Next issue is scanned. I don't have time to post it (or crop/rotate it), but it's being uploaded to the Mediafire folder. Has some nice spreads.
Hail Asran. ;_;
Why does bakaupdates have 2 separate tags for this, this is kind of silly.
I'm too tired to crop and straighten it, but here's a dump to read.
If you want to help with additional editing, or anything else, you can contact me here.
How many chapters are left? And when will you guys begin applying the translations to the tanks?
Also wouldn't it be necessary to check if the text flows correctly as well or something?
>How many chapters are left?
There are 172 chapters total.
>when will you guys begin applying the translations to the tanks?
Whenever it's ready, I suppose. At least a month from now, as I have to order and scan the volumes, which then have to be edited.
>check if the text flows correctly
With that I meant officially translated chapters that are yet to be scanned.
>which then have to be edited.
You guys want to redraw shit? I don't think there's even need to do so, seeing as all of the SFXes seem to be in English even in the original tanks.
I'm not exactly sure how many English chapters there are. Around 50 or so.
>seem to be in English even in the original tanks.
All I see are Japanese SFX, and somethings will require redrawing (spreads, titlecards, etc).
>All I see are Japanese SFX
Some of them are in English. I must've confused it with Cat Shit One or something.
Oh, you're right. That's weird, I wonder why Shintani chose to mix both.
Really, only our faith keeps us alive.
Still trying to find out which Animerica issues that I'd need to buy. So far, I've learned that ANIMERICA V2 #1 (1/94) contains AREA88 Part Two: Mission 2 "Beneath The Scarlet Sands, Part Two. I have no idea what chapters that corresponds to, as I can't find a convenient list of all the chapter names.
Yep. I'll probably order it all at once, if the store carries it, so if anyone wants to donate a few bucks, that'd be appreciated.
I'll definitely scan one or two issues tonight, since I don't have work tomorrow.
Roundel, and yeah he's in the manga.
I'm waiting on an eBay store to stock the issues of Area 88 and Animerica that I need, so that I can buy them all at once. Otherwise, I might rescan the earlier issues to replace the shitty scans that are floating around. No ETA on cleans yet, so if he's lurking, he can answer that instead. Waiting on a store to restock Area 88's v1 (JP).
Next scan will probably be on Wednesday or so.
Editor here; I got much less done on spring break than I'd hoped so while I do have my desktop I also have a smidge of uni bullshit to get done first.
Expect cleaned scans of the first chapter circa Wednesday, my shit should be in order by then.
Because they think that nobody is interested in aviation.
They'd rather make some shitty mechs or "cute gals doing cute stuff" shit than give us something like Area 88 or Only Old Men Are Going to Battle.
>cute cookie cutter girls doing military shit
Fuck those strike bitches and kancolle shit.
Great news, everyone!
