I cannot watch modern anime. People do not look like people. Women and girls are the worst, but it even affects male.
Left: Human being.
Right: Inhuman lab experiment gone wrong. Was put out of its misery.
Modern shows look more like right than they do left. They probably look worse since I've noticed they're also doing the no nose thing with teen guys too now.
I never watched Seed. It was around the time art styles started to look awful so I skipped them.
I don't even like early 90's character designs. They just kept getting worse and worse.
I know it's all trends too. They just kept exaggerating the art styles of before. Eyes kept getting bigger, noses got smaller, etc. But they crossed a line where it just looked horrifyingly bad. And too different from humans for me to accept or take seriously.
Yeah, anime looked so much better in the 70s and 80s.
Depends on the artist, but I certainly have a preference for the old styles myself. However, there are a lot of modern artists today that I fucking love right up there with the old greats. Kantoku is one of those modern artists that I really enjoy.
>Right: Inhuman lab experiment gone wrong. Was put out of its misery.
God Damn right.
Why would you try and keep this worthless fucking thread alive? So OP can bitch about the good old days? Shit, that's what this whole fucking board is for isn't it? A bunch of old codgers telling youngsters to get off their lawn with their newfangled bullshit. You're all just a bunch of hypocrites.
Here's your reply.
Yes OP, because we all want to watch anime for realism.
>Inhuman lab experiment gone wrong
Jesus is sensitive about that.
But i fucking wish seed looked like your pic. Most of the time it looks like pure, unfiltered QUALITY.
Well, watch the right shows, you dimwit.
There are plenty of shows that don't have "Am I kawaii, oni-chan?" designs.
Enjoy being stuck in the past with your underdeveloped palate.
>Gundam SEED is now old enough that the prime demographic for Gundam series of today was just being born as it was airing.
Oh god he's right.
One of the best fucking shows of 2014, motherfucker.
The show they're talking about is Shingeki no Bahamut. It's an interesting show with pretty fantastic production values.
Also, one of the best endings I've ever heard (in terms of music quality, but it's also pretty feels-inducing).
A very fun and adventurous show that will give you feels by the end.
>WHERE ARE YOUR FUCKING NOSES?!
This image is totally misleading. You can find moe girls in older anime, but that's not the point. There are lots of major character design differences with anime over the years. And the percentage of "cute moe girls" from very small, to a very high percentage is one of them.
>Sorry... it's supposed to be 'mouth'.
Old school girls were stylized and infantilized to hell and back OP. It's telling that the best or worst examples are found in hentai or otherwise obviously sexual OVAs.
Shading of hair random, even waves on an uneven surface.
Shading along the hair strands.
>implying Milky Holmes isn't a Mecca of hand drawn backgrounds
It has the same art director as Space Adventure Cobra and Utena you philistine.
>like half of eighties girls have the exact same hairstyle or have basically the same face
>generic eighties art styles tend to suffer from horrible sameface
uh oh i said a bad thing about the eighties time for people to pick out their favourite eighties girls to demonstrate that they missed the point
Yes, original version IS better than the HD remasters, except for fights.
It's still a really, really shitty series but whatever
Be aware though that Destiny is basically the same shit. (idk i didn't watch it, just saw screenshots. Apparently the HD remasters made the designs more Destiny-like)
nah I think he resembles that Vanilla guy more from AT VOTOMS
His personality also resembles Vanilla.
Only more of a badass.
And instead of hanging out with Chirico's dour ass, he has this qt.
aaw shiet, better put it on my chinese cartoon backlog. Thanks nigga
>Things were better in the olden days
Hang on, I have an image for this.
I'm pretty sure that's the point of the image. It's not actually saying that modern anime is objectively better animation-wise, it's saying that you can really easily make an image that shows as much by taking the "worst" of the past and the "best" of the present.
It's to counter the usually more serious images that do the same, but with taking the best stills of the best past anime and the worst from the worst of the present.
No one with half a brain seriously thinks that's a fair image. It's just one that has the purpose of reverse a comparison to show how stupid making the comparison is.
Pretty sure it's just talking about things animation-wise (and obviously cherry picking too).
Because if not, there's a few others that don't really deserve to be their either.
Lookin' at you, Usagi Drop.
I don't get it, man. I watched seed and destiny in the remaster version, I didn't know the old version looked better.
How the FUCK can they even make it worse? Every time a human showed up on screen I wanted to puke, now looking at images the original wasn't that bad.
Why would they do that
>I watched the remastered versions
>I didn't realize how bad they were
>Why would they do that.
The funniest part of this?
There are retcons in the remaster that you don't even known about.
There's mostly subtle stuff. Little changes here and there. The problem is that changes are made to make Kira seem more infallible and Jesus-esque, so he does nothing wrong throughout the series.
The most notable and quoted example is Nicole's death. In the remaster he throws himself on Kira's sword. It should go without saying that that's not how it actually happened.
Ah yes, sorry. Let me post a better one.
>tfw no games about Scottish alien pterodactyls piloting interstellar warships
Ok, well, I'm an artist for a living, so I'll give my opinion on why the left is the better picture.
The lighting, for starters. Both have white light but the source of light for the left is above and to the left, whereas the right has studio white lighting from the front (slightly above). It's very boring and you almost never want to use that lighting if you're creating a dynamic picture.
Second is line width. The left image has a standard line width. It isn't preferable but if you can pull it off, it works (I'll explain why soon). The second image has completely arbitrary line width. Usually width follows the density or the object, or reflects the angle of the light. For her chin to have such a large stroke, the top of her hair should have a very small one, but that isn't the case...
Thirdly, the texture. This applies to the line texture on the left. The use of a textured brush eliminates a lot of small errors that are easily noticed with "standard" flat brushes. This is usually why cell shaded anime looks better, since it has an appealing natural texture. The right looks plastic-like and inorganic.
Finally the choice of colors.
The left's skin tone is more dynamic. The color of her shadows are more red than the skin on her face, whereas the right just shades with a slightly more black version of the skin. In art, it's a rule to NEVER shade with black, or transparent black. This is how a lot of younger artists color, and it looks very amateur.
The background in the left image is much darker compared to the character, and the red stands out against it. In the right image, the colors are all very visually similar to one another, in terms of light saturation. This makes the image appear very flat in comparison to the right, again, an amateur mistake.
>aired over a decade ago
Something doesn't add up. The OP is just baiting to vent his autism.
>Modern shows look more like right than they do left. They probably look worse since I've noticed they're also doing the no nose thing with teen guys too now.
No not really. 90% of the shit airing this season looks like left.
Fuck all you old anime people, when ever i say i like anime i have to say i like "new anime" which makes me sound like some kind of hipster fag because i don't wanna be part of the whole "Shittily animated and drawn robots"fan club or the "omg so kewl and 2deep4u, nostalgia is the best xddddd what went wrong????
Rather than lack of nose, Im more disturbed by how pointy the chins are getting. Like 80% of shows each season, they don't even write rounded chins any more, they are like less than 90 degree in angle.
Well, no Garo for you.
Sucks to be you then.
Anon, the point of that picture is to make fun of people who think that post-90s is nothing but cute girls doing cute things anime, even though that has been around for decades and goes back to the days of Osamu Tezuka.
Anime has always been done in a way to meet deadlines, but with the advent of digital production, these deadlines can be made more intense and completed in time. Because of this, we aren't stuck in the stock footage hell for a lot of the shows in this day (discounting the mecha genre), meaning that studios can make several unique scenes with dazzling animation (see Nichijou for example).
The flattening of colors is a relatively small price to pay for a significant bump in the animation for TV series, plus lots of shows can make it work for a stylistic choice, like Tiger and Bunny.
Now this doesn't make one era objectively better. After all, we had this almost a decade ago
tl;dr Animation hasn't improved, shading has just changed to meet deadlines.
I mean, I will admit that it's a very stylized look that often gets some getting used to, but it's legit AOTS.
Sigh, no answer. This reminds me of when Lordgenome couldn't rely on his mech so he got out of it and started kicking ass on his own.
Aaand nothing shows up when I plug it into google. What the fuck. So this is just some mystery paradise anime nobody knows anything about.
Everybody has the tendency to think older=better, because you've forgotten all of the shitty anime that you watched, and are choosing to cite the best, most memorable examples of representative of that era.
It's like retro video game fans who forget that for every Ocarina of Time or Goldeneye, there were a hundred totally unremarkable N64 games.
