Will Nagano and Anno ever be able to live up to the giant shadow cast by their mentors?
Or will they both keep rehashing their same respective franchises for the rest of their lives?
>Implying Gunbuster isn't better than everything baldy made or will make
>Anno's directing Godzilla
You know how Nagano and Tomino met? Nagano was dressed as Char and played an electric guitar at the famous "Anime New Century Declaration" at Shijuku at the premiere of the first Gundam motion picture, the event widely recognized as the start of the Otaku
Imagawa and Kondo (who died) were Tomino's and Miyazaki's "true" disciples in the sense that they were taught the art of directing from the masters themselves.
However, Anno and Nagano are arguably their most "popular" disciples, and the relationship those two have with Tomino and Miyazaki is essentially identical, right down to having them be the Guests of Honor at their weddings.
If you look at Nagano's history to Anno's you will find some bizarre similarities.
>Both made their anime industry debuted in the early 80's while they were around 20, L-Gaim for Nagano (directed by Tomino) and Nausicaa for Anno (directed by Miyazaki)
>Both would use their debut work as the foundation to craft their magnum opus later on in their lives (Nausicaa -> Evangelion and L-Gaim -> FSS)
>Both would reunite once again with their mentors for a project long after they had gained their fame (Brain Powered and The Wind Rises)
>After getting married, both decide to take a hiatus from their respective franchises before attempting some of the most cringe-worthy reboots/retcons ever done (The Rebuilds and Gothicmade), effectively (and purposely) shitting all over their live's work in the process
>Something about spiting the anime/manga industry because their mentors did it too
>PILES OF CASH ALL AROUND THEM FROM LICENSING WHILE THEY LAUGH AT HOW FUCKING RETARDED THEIR FANS ARE
The real irony here is that you would think from their respective styles that Anno would be Tomino's disciple whereas Nagano would be Miyazaki's.
PILES OF CASH ALL AROUND THEM FROM LICENSING WHILE THEY LAUGH AT HOW FUCKING RETARDED THEIR FANS ARE
Except Nagano isn't making any money since people by in large don't give a shit about FSS or Gothicmade while Eva is even bigger than it was back when it first aired.
Anno isn't even working on the Rebuilds, they were just made to fund projects for his studio. They're done by his collegues and newbie animators with him giving them ideas along the way. Instead of working on the final film he's headlining the Animator's Expo and co-directing the upcoming Japan Godzilla reboot. Only butthurt Reifags take Rebuilds seriously.
>Anno and Miyazaki are the most popular and nameable anime director in the world
>Will Nagano and Anno ever be able to live up to the giant shadow cast by their mentors?
The better question to ask is will they be able to step out of this "shadow". Despite how much you like (or dislike) what has come before, the genre can only grow (not just survive) if it is open to new ideas and moves in new directions. We don't need 1-15 years of rehashing the stories/concepts we already have existing. Nagano and Anno (and others) need to build upon them and go their own way.
He's not even the face of GitS anymore since more people like SAC than any of the films nowadays.
Literally means fucking nothing if you come home empty handed.
>That makes him an acclaimed filmmaker on any scale, rather than just an otaku favorite like Anno.
The Tokyo International Film Festival disagrees
>Except Nagano isn't making any money since people by in large don't give a shit about FSS or Gothicmade while Eva is even bigger than it was back when it first aired.
What difference does it make when they're both doing the equivalent of running their own franchises into the ground?
>Anno isn't even working on the Rebuilds, they were just made to fund projects for his studio.
That wouldn't explain his recent depression.
Also, he's not "working" on the Expos, he's just acting as the producer.
He probably had tons of offers from various animation studios but rejected them all except Tomino for Brain Powerd.
It's a damn huge waste of potential, Nagano's visual style would have easily put him in the top-tier names of anime if he had decided to be a part of it past the 80's.
>Anno is heavily involved every step of the way from script to final animation and voice recording.
I love how we have evidence that proves against this and Reifags are still indenial.
>I love how we have evidence that proves against this
The only "evidence" was Anno's recent open letter about how he got depression again while working on 3.0. That shit doesn't happen if you stay away from something. Best of all, it goes against everything you said.
Keep your waifu wars on /a/ you stupid little shit. No one gives a fuck about Rei, but we all have something against misinformation.
>his only real mentor is Itano
Are people on /m/ really this stupid?
>"here's muh untranslated proof"
>people who can into nip calling it out as b8 on the very same thread
Anno's first work on the anime industry wasn't Macross, it was a bunch of various other projects where he wasn't credited since he was simply an in-between animator. Likewise, Nagano's first work wasn't L-Gaim, it was doing designs for Vifam.
It was only after Nausicaa and L-Gaim that both of them really put themselves on the map.
In-between animators are credited and Anno did both in-betweens and key animation on Macross. I can't find any information on him starting out on anything else. Please show it if you have it.
>That had nothing to do with the production of 3.0 you fucking idiot.
>2012, December. After Eva Q opened to public I broke down. As it is put, I became depressed. Having cut pieces of my soul for six years in order to make Eva again it was a natural retribution.
What the fuck are you smoking?
>the other faggot doesn't even know what he's talking about.
Jesus christ, did you even read the thread? Are you this asspained?
>One anon makes a claim
>Reifag gets butthurt and spouts bullshit
>Anon comes back with evidence and source
>Reifag continues to spout bullshit and doesn't prove anything
Did you even read the thread?
Again that has nothing to do with 3.0's production and that still doesn't disprove my point especially since he's co-directing Godzilla and working on other projects outside Eva nowadays. But continue to fail to prove a point Reifag
>never let their actors go back to toku, but can salvage AV actresses
what in the fuck
If Anno fucks up 4.0 like he did with 3.0, he'll certainly be living up to the "giant shadow"
as Japanese George Lucas.
Then again, it's not like he cares since he would rather spend the rest of his life on Toku than anime.
As for Nagano, the fucker won't release Gothicmade on BD for people to judge. Hell, who knows if he will ever release anything new at all, or just go back into his hiatus like the last ten years.
No wonder Tomino and Miyazaki are pissed.
FORGOT THE FUCKING WEBM
Enjoy your QUALITY and space-autists.
>>Both would use their debut work as the foundation to craft their magnum opus later on in their lives (Nausicaa -> Evangelion and L-Gaim -> FSS)
At least Evangelion isn't a complete rehash of Nausicaa.
FSS Is regurgitated L-gaim.
Fucking lazy hack.
Fine taste you have there m8.
I take it you have not read either the Nausicaa or FSS manga, because if you did you would know how much of a fucking retard you sound like right now.
Also, L-Gaim was a regurgitated Star Wars which was a regurgitated Dune.
And really, if you think Evangelion was original, you haven't read a single lick of Ishikawa's manga or watched any Ultraman. Which is where 90% of the show comes from.
Also, I guarantee you more people have watched Gunbuster than GGG.
Suck muh diiick
You missed my point. Nagano couldn't even think of new names for his recycled designs. I don't care if L-gaim takes from other stories, his ego doesn't match his shitty work ethic.
>You missed my point. Nagano couldn't even think of new names for his recycled designs.
And Anno couldn't let go of his shitty Christian symbolism even after Nadia. Your point?
>I don't care if L-gaim takes from other stories
Yet you care when FSS takes from L-Gaim. Great logic.
The only thing FSS and L-Gaim have in common is the setting and some mecha designs.
Meanwhile, I could probably name 20 shows and manga at the top of my head that had a similar premise and setting and even characters to Evangelion that came out years before it.
If you're seriously trying to defend Evangelion for "originality", you done fucked up.
Since you seem so assblasted over Nagano's lack of originality, I'll bet you're cheering his shitty Gothicmade redesigns too because they're all renamed and look nothing like the ones from L-Gaim.
Oh wait, you would rather shit on him for something he did right rather than something he genuinely fucked up.
I care because I truly liked FSS and what it was when Nagano stopped writing it in the early 2000s. He then decided to take something that was great and ruin it. Well I'm disillusioned and I don't respect his vision anymore.
GTMs look terrible and the reboot has turned me off completely. Comprehend English?
Whatever, stay mad dudes.
Considering the shit Nagano has done, I'd be surprised if he has any fans left right now. He's pretty actively shat on his own fanbase. It wouldn't be surprising to see someone with the full Nagano collection bashing him.
So the retcon has left you so asspained that you denounce everything Nagano has ever done, including his original designs and manga?
I mean hell, I and most other people think he's a fucktard too, but that's like denouncing the original Star Wars just because the prequels were absolute dogshit. Same could be said about Anno and the Rebuilds.
He still has his Nipland fanbase. That's all that matters to his publishers, really.
I don't really mind Nagano taking ideas from L-Gaim and turning them into FSS, hell, he came up with pretty much all of them in the first place and many of them (like the Fatimas) got rejected from L-Gaim. It was just him taking something that he created and removing it from the demands of a toy corporation like Bandai and their restrictions. I have to applaud him for that to a certain extent.
I do agree with you about the Gothicmades though, but so do most people here.
Sometimes I wish Nagano was more like Kawamori, but then I'm reminded of Aquarion EVOL and somehow I would take the Gothicmade retcon over that disaster any day.
And even then, people ripping off their own old works is not unheard of. Even Hosoda ripped off the entire plot and premise of Summer Wars wholesale from his old Digimon movie, and there are some idiots who think he's "the next Miyazaki".
I don't get why people harp on so much about originality on /m/. Even disregarding the saying "nothing new under the sun", most /m/ stuff was inspired by a liking for western SF. And that's not even taking into account that manga and anime itself was inspired by western animation. Plus Star Wars has come up in this thread, and that also was heavily based on stuff the creator liked, drawing on old serials and closely emulating aerial combat from older war movies.
It's sad that his Ghibli copycat movie was better than Goro's Shitstains from Earthsea, and it wasn't even good to begin with.
