The AT-AT is the best mecha ever designed.
You can't knock the AT-AT, but in some ways I prefer the AT-TE. Same basic function, but where the former looks like a machine of terror the latter looks like a machine of war, all stocky and bristling with guns.
The AT-ST is a far more sensible design. If it had the size and armour of the AT-AT backing it up, it'd be far superior.
According to Lucas the idea came from camels.
Though he fucked up by not having both legs on one side move at the same time like camels do. But then that would cause a lot of rocking and probably wouldn't be good for the machine's balance.
I wish they'd kept Macquerrie's ball-turret design on the nose or at the very least, included a heavy artillery AT-AT variation that had it.
Because blaster can't fire in an arc, extra height means they can fire farther.
They say if you calculate the actual height of the AT-ATs main guns you get a distance to horizon of 17.28, which distance they mentioned in TESB.
