>>13453700 It's like a Zaku but with all the superfluous bits stripped off. The thing has less armor and is less bulky than the zaku, shoulders are only partially covered, and the standard Leo lacks a backpack.
Nostalgia. Leos blew up a dozen at a time and never seemed anything but useless fodder for Gundams to increase their kill counts. But its from the first Gundam series I watched as a kid and its cool as fucking hell, now kill me some goddamn Leo HGs or MGs already.
>>13453912 Younger Oldbeard (40) reporting in. VHS copying circles were a big thing in old days. That was how I got a lot of my old anime. Good old Bobby Beaver's fansubs of Maison Ikkoku were huge back in the early 90s. I can't remember who did my CCA but it was a big coup to get.
>>13453844 the folks who existed before good fansub groups and wide torrent availability are the ultimate oldfags. So what if they couldn't watch obscure-ass shit from the 70s; they did what they could. Is that not /m/ as shit.
>>13453967 >>13453844 It refers to the old-guard in the west, or the USA specifically. I'm 30 here and watched the original airing of both Wing and G Gundam on CN. I was probably in middle school at the time. Now I'm an old fuck, so yea, I think that qualifies.
Before Wing and G, NO ONE here had ever even heard of Gundam. And at the time, they WERE gundam. Ask any fan at the time who Char Aznable was and they would have given you a blank stare. Show them his picture and you'd get a "He looks like a clone of Zechs". Yeah.
If anyone on this board does happen to be one of those rare breed of 40+ fans who through some magic knew of gundam in the states before CN, you are the exception, not the rule. But I salute you nonetheless
>toonami shitheads believing they're super-special and amazing once again come on guys, you have to realize it's a problem when even people younger than you have realized what a problem it is. >20 reporting
in like '99 or some time around there my mom got me a dubbed copy of the first gundam (0079) abridged movie on VHS.
I remember my first /m/ title to see was Robotech (idgaf what you think of it) of course Wing came after.
Damn I remember having the "Official Gundam Guide" or as I called it the Gundam book. Taught me to look for all the other shows which is how I found out 08th MS came to the US on dvd. The thing I wanted to see most was X. Didn't get to until college
>>13453700 I'm 23 and yeah wing was my first gundam on toonami, lets get that out of the way. Now then I actually didn't like it as a kid, and thought they were worthless. When I watched wing again as an adult, I feel in love with the suit. The modular design with multiple packs and configurations for different situations is a real turn on. Plus actually a pretty attractive design overall.
>>13453780 >Back in the day, we didn't have no fancy torrents, streaming video or any of the other fancy pants methods you damn young'uns have of watched your Japanese cartoons WE ADULTS had equivalents. Fuck, in 2000 I was downloading anime off some shitty streaming client. Face it, you're just an underaged millenial who's first super robot anime was Wing, and are projecting that onto everyone else.
>>13454160 >It refers to the old-guard in the west, or the USA specifically. I'm 30 here and watched the original airing of both Wing and G Gundam on CN. I was probably in middle school at the time. Now I'm an old fuck, so yea, I think that qualifies. Uh, no. Holy shit, this is some next-level newfaggotry. I felt like I was reading a MAL post or something, Jesus. I mean Jesus fucking Christ, do you know what you sound like? You sound like if, in ten years, I were to talk about how TTGL was my first anime and that were to somehow make me a hardcore anime fan.
>>13454956 >what are you older than him? No >were you acquainted with gundam before he was? Fucking apparently. >not watching shitty VHS fansubs >if not, then you should shut up Sorry you were just as much a newfag in 2000 as you are in 2015.
Try again scrub, I've been coming to 4chan since my first year of college. You know, that year the fucking site went live?
And I never made any claim that Wing was anything more than a shit show. All I said was that it went a long way in moulding the mecha fanbase in the west and by the transitive property, this board.
The same way no one who's serious on /a/ would tell you that DBZ or Sailor Moon were ever the best anime made. But they might argue that without those shows airing on network television in the US in the late 90s, /a/ might be a very different place
>>13455587 >Try again scrub, I've been coming to 4chan since my first year of college. No, you weren't. >I was probably in middle school at the time. Nice try, but if you were in middle school in 2001, then you weren't in college in 2004; and I certainly don't believe you're 30.
>>13455679 1. Yes I was 2. You got me there. I fucked up. Graduated in '03 so yeah, wasn't middle when I watched Wing 3. Yes I am.
Also your whole post is a perfect example of a strawman argument. You find one mistake and take it to assume the whole thing was a lie. Then you attack the 'lie' and manage to avoid defending the actual point being made instead of refuting it.
>>13455735 Obviously you can explain your lies when they've been pointed out, but what's important is that you were caught lying. No, you weren't here in 2004, because everybody claims they were when they weren't. Yes, you watched Wing in middle school, because it was your first anime. No, watching Wing in middle school doesn't give you anime cred and no, it does not make you part of the "old guard" you giant faggot.
I assume half of people like the Leo because it looks cute in an ugly way, and is extremely simplified. Everything about it is as blocky and shitty and grunt-like as possible. It's also highly, easily moddable in-universe and genuinely feels like some mass-produced all-rounder suit.
youre all eternal newfags because youre arguing age on an anonymous imageboard. stop trying to prove your credentials you plebbit shits. youre a gundam fan if you like it all. someone from the 80s can be a complete fag like itt. you dont have to be young to be a retard. theres no denying that a lot of people who dont really like gundam saw song on toonami, thus making it more prolific in english communities
>>13455961 >Obviously explaining the straw-man fallacy was a waste of my time, because you learned nothing and went on to do it again minutes later. Also because you completely fucked up what a strawman is you fucking idiot. Pointing out flaws in an argument isn't a strawman. Keep that shit on reddit. >I am 30, I graduated in '03, watched Wing in HIGH school, and have been coming to 4chan since 2004 You're a liar and a massive faggot. You're literally no different than the people who think watching Robotech makes them anime fans. Actually, that's not true; at least Robotech came out in the 80s. Fuck off you eternal newfag.
>>13456599 >The so-called typical "attacking a straw man" argument creates the illusion of having completely refuted or defeated an opponent's proposition by covertly replacing it with a different proposition (i.e., "stand up a straw man") and then to refute or defeat that false argument ("knock down a straw man") instead of the original proposition.
You pointed out a flaw in my previous statement, called that flaw a lie and proceeded to shift the argument to me being a liar instead of trying out logically refute any point made that didn't involve my fucking age or date of graduation.
>>13456672 >The so-called typical "attacking a straw man" argument creates the illusion of having completely refuted or defeated an opponent's proposition by covertly replacing it with a different proposition (i.e., "stand up a straw man") and then to refute or defeat that false argument ("knock down a straw man") instead of the original proposition. >You pointed out a flaw in my previous statement, >The so-called typical "attacking a straw man" argument creates the illusion of having completely refuted or defeated an opponent's proposition by covertly replacing it with a different proposition Nigga, it's right in fucking front of you.
>>13462506 Leo defeated a Gundam episode 1. Leo tackled a Gundam episode 7. Leos pinned down Gundams in the midteens forcing one of them to self destruct. Leo matched a Gundam in Endless Waltz. Leo>>>>all
>>13453844 My mom bought me a GP01FB hug kit when I was a kid and I thought it was a proto-wing gundam. I also got a double zeta action figure and I thought it had something to do with a kind prequel. Oh the days before Internet.
I always liked the Aries just as much, except for the stupid helmet it had. The Leo was pretty much a perfect grunt suit in terms of design though. I very much prefer simple, utilitarian designs, they're more military-like. And the Tallgeese, which is basically a fancy Leo on design terms, is one of my favorite MS in terms of looks.
>>13463310 There are more people who watch dubbed than subbed so they probably figured they'd make a wider profit margin if they kept the dubbed version cheaper while gauging the smaller portion who liked subbed.
