So what's the appeal of Getter Robo, anyway?
I adore classic super robots. I'm a huge Mazinger fan.
But I read roughly halfway into the original manga and none of the protagonists are remotely likeable so far.
For the most part they just seem bloodthirsty, and aside from the Getter 3 pilot, who seems like a decent guy at least, I get the feeling they're just in it out of necessity. All anyone says about them is that they're "hot-blooded", as per super-robot protag tradition, but being hot blooded doesn't mean you have to be an absolute psycho.
I guess Ryoma is ok, or at least not as absolutely hateable as Hayato (who in spite of seeming SOMEWHAT sympathetic I still think deserves to be as miserable as he seems). Still, though, I feel absolutely no attachment to him. The only goal they establish for him from the start is to beat the shit out of people to protect his father's honor, which isn't furthered in the slightest by piloting Getter anyway. At least in no clear way.
Should I just keep reading? Because I feel like, halfway through the manga, I should have seen the barest amount of character development beyond agreeing to pilot Getter at all. Although, I would understand perfectly well if I were jumping to conclusions. I've read things with slow build before.
Or is the original manga just not where I should go if I'm looking for a genuinely compelling story?
I checked out Armageddon, but while it takes place in it's own universe, part of me felt like I was already expected to know or care about the characters.
Help me, /m/. Getter is fucking everywhere in the Super Robot scene and I want to at least be able to appreciate it.
>So what's the appeal of Getter Robo, anyway?
To cool people: It's a robot that has 3 forms formed by combining conponent planes in a different order. That's really fucking cool.
To Getterfags: such hot blood, such edge, amorality is awesome, nothin' personal kid.
The manga really is nothing special. It just features a really cool robot. You can appropriately appriciate the designs elsewhere, like the anime (TV and OVA) or SRW if you wish.
Getter Robo is a kid's manga you retard.
>burning your own son to death because he has amphibious lizards on him isn't edgy
>poking a guy's eyes out, ripping off his nose, and then cutting off his ears isn't edgy
>death and blood everywhere because it's made for kids in the 70s
They're not. They're just dramatic bits that make up the majority of 70s mecha shows. There is blood in the original Mazinger anime. People die as well in it.
If you consider any of those edgy, you might want to go back to tumblr.
>it's okay when Nagai/Ishikawa does it!
They were there to make it more "extreme." That is the literal definition of edgy. Worst part is, it's even the shitty 4chan definition of edgy, "mature but not." But, you know, YOU don't use it like that, right? You're not going to go into an A/Z thread or a SEED thread and use edgy as a buzzword, right?
Also I've read and loved all of Go Nagai's English-translated works and he's still edgy as fuck. It's his thing. Fuck off./spoiler]
>calling something edgy means you're triggered
To any normal individual, these scenes are just dramatic moments that are there to enhance the mood.
To some malfunctioning individual such as yourself, it's just "baaaaaaaaw edgy". You even made some pretty hugeass and unfounded claims about "getterfags" liking Getter Robo for the "edge".
Anyone who read the comments so far will instantly know you're full of shit and you should kill yourself.
>To any normal individual, these scenes are just dramatic moments that are there to enhance the mood.
They're not dramatic, they're literally used to make the characters look like hard-asses. There is literally no difference between Saotome sending actual assassins to kill Ryouma and Inaho shooting down Slaine. Musashi dying was for dramatic effect. Hayato being forced to kill his friends was for dramatic effect. Hell, killing civilians at the party in G was for dramatic effect. But all of the murder in the original series was put in solely to make the main characters look like psychopaths because Ishikawa thought that would be cool. And in case you're an actual, legitimate, literal fucking retarded spic who doesn't into English, here is the actual, legitimate, literal definition of the word "edgy."
> new and unusual in a way that is likely to make some people uncomfortable
From Merriam-Webster's site.
>To some malfunctioning individual such as yourself, it's just "baaaaaaaaw edgy". You even made some pretty hugeass and unfounded claims about "getterfags" liking Getter Robo for the "edge".
>this whole paragraph
Anon, if you projected any harder it would burn a hole through your wall. I have literally not once used the term "getterfag" in this conversation. More than that, I guarantee you that I have consumed more Getter-related media than you have. I know it as a fact, because I'm an actual fan of the series and not a shitposting hispanic.
>>Anyone who read the comments so far will instantly know you're full of shit and you should kill yourself.
Dude they're fucking newts. I would have at least tried to flick them off, maybe with some sort of long, metallic object like the nozzle of a flamethrower.
And since when did "burning to death" not qualify as "slow and agonizing?" Shoot the motherfucker if you have to.
If you don't like the manga getter team, you won't like anything else in the franchise. Drop it and move on.
Oh yeah. You might like the toei shows. I don't like them very much, but if you dislike the Manga cast for being too extreme, they might be for you.
Go out and get me a bigger version then.
Read past the first half of the first arc. It doesn't really pull itself together until the second half of that. If you're not enjoying it by G, don't bother reading the rest.
The appeal of Getter is that it's batshit insane. It's some fucking wild shit to read, and it's pretty enjoyable seeing how the hell it's going to get crazier from there.
The Getter and Getter G manga were DynaPro's usual manga adaptations of their TV stuff.
Things really start to pick up in Getter Go, where Ishikawa opts to deviate from the TV series and started introducing the idea of Getter Rays having a will of its own and its ability at assimilation of living organisms.
In the Shin Getter manga, he introduced more concepts like time-traveling that made getter even more sinister. He also introduces a whole new perspective of the Hyakki Empire.
Getter Robo Arc continues along with this idea, giving a full-blown view at how powerful Getter can be.
>I would have at least tried to flick them off, maybe with some sort of long, metallic object like the nozzle of a flamethrower.
Yeah sure, because they'll let you do that, and it's not like there were other people there besides Saotome's son, right.
When you're the only hope of mankind and you're cornered sacrifices are necessary, do you think Saotome enjoyed that or didn't care about his son?
>And since when did "burning to death" not qualify as "slow and agonizing?" Shoot the motherfucker if you have to.
It didn't matter, Saotome's son was already brainfucked anyway, he was nothing more than a vegetable to him, he died the moment the newts took control of him.
>Yeah sure, because they'll let you do that,
What'll they do about it? They're fucking Newts.
>and it's not like there were other people there besides Saotome's son, right.
There weren't, Saotome Jr was the last person in the room they killed.
>When you're the only hope of mankind and you're cornered sacrifices are necessary, do you think Saotome enjoyed that or didn't care about his son?
It certainly didn't look like he cared.
>It didn't matter, Saotome's son was already brainfucked anyway, he was nothing more than a vegetable to him, he died the moment the newts took control of him.
Pretty sure later in the series Newt hypnotism was undone.
getter dindu nuffin, he a good mech, you be robocist, cistaste mazinfag
I like the tv version better, but that probably has most to do with how I personally think Akira Kamiya's performance as Ryouma is the pinnacle of super robot voice acting. They were, however, a bit too balanced, maybe.
The cast of Xabungle were more entertaining (to me) in that regard without going full personel, kid. Akin to a bunch of well adjusted teenagers hopped up on emotion and hormones.
Ideally it would have been the tv cast with a compromise between the violence of the manga cast and Xabungle's.
I see a certain someone is getting really aggressive with his trolling since everyone started ignoring his usual bait.
no the word you're looking for it cute. Hayato is cute.
I only like Getter manga because the story is genuinely self deprecatingly funny. The characters are easy to relate to, and likable too.
I don't see where the "getter is crazy" meme comes from, but I'm guessing it's from the Spic.
Or maybe people just can't separate the OVAs from the manga.
OFFICIAL HAYATO POWER RANKINGS:
ETERNAL KING: Arc Hayato
Getter Robo/G manga Hayato
Shin manga Hayato
STILL BEST BOY TIER:
Arc Hayato really is best Hayato. Go Hayato is a definite second.
Ryoma's wife was ugly as fuck. Man has bad taste.
>Only a month and a half until the new Getter manga starts up
I'm pretty goddamn fucking hype. I still can't get over the fact its titled "GETTER ROBO: DEVEOLUTION! THE LAST 3 MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSE!" Shit sounds amazing.
For me the appeal of Getter Robo is the Getter itself being a genuinely terrifying force of nature, wrapped up under the title of Super Robot. Much like Ideon.
The series is edgy as fuck, in case you didn't notice, that's its appeal and they're pretty consistent in keeping up that edginess as the serie's brand in the other parts I watched/read.
Getter Robo is everywhere, you just have to not be a newfaggot and know what to look for.
OP is really trying to troll hard.
There's Aquarion too, with more of a focus on the combining than the drills. Nadesico made fun of it with Gekiganger. The different Braves series all have combining robots, even though they don't have multiple forms made out of different combinations. And some of the Transformers combiners in G1 could have their components shuffled around however you want.
I don't know what you're talking about senpai
Don't forget Lucky Star and all of the other random comedy anime that throw in Getter references. If there's a mecha reference in something non-mecha, it basically boils down to Eva, Gundam, Mazinger, Getter or Tetsujin because they are the most recognizable.
Let's just go back to posting Getter rather than feeding a bad troll.
Why won't nippon make a new anime, i thought wacky and bizarre shit was in
One day, anon. If they made a new Getter anime featuring an all female cast...
Is Gurumeda the only Ishikawa fujo? Going by stuff like >>13456838 and all the shirtless musclemen in Ishikawa manga you'd expect an at least minor following
Spics are people who hate Nagai and Ishikawa. They're different from regular haters because they keep trying to ruin every Dynamic Pro thread with their shitty trolling. Normal haters would simply fuck off and go fap to Tomino Reco or Vulvarape or something..
Hayato seems a lot more religious about Getter energy imo
Not to mention he's a lot more militaristic in the way he operates. Saotome always put research first, like when the Getter team had to basically threaten Saotome to get him to launch Shin Getter before everyone got killed.
We used to think that spics simply meant people who couldn't enjoy Shin Mazinger because it wasn't Toeizinger.
The truth is, spics are much much worse than that. They just hate everything Nagai and Ishikawa. It's easy to detect a spic. Just look for the posts where they claim they are big fans of Nagai while shitting on his works non-stop.
Watch out for the people who also have contrarian opinions, like that guy who claims to love the TV series, but hate the manga. He's a spic as well.
Also the tripfag on /a/ who constantly praises Nagai's retro artwork, but can't help himself to shit on every new work Nagai has done. He's another spic.
And then there are the american yanks. Yanks who are too offended about Nagai and Ishikawa's works that they'll use buzz words like "edgy" to make their SJW mentality appear superior. Any anime that has some amount of fanservice will be deemed too amoral by them because of muh morals and muh deep art. They hate everything good about Japanese anime, like hentai and md geist. You can ignore these faggots since they're too busy fapping to cowboy bap and evanjellyon.
But spics? You can't ignore them since they're in every dynamic pro thread.
So next time you suspect someone is a spic, just call him out on the filthy dirty hispanic that he is. Don't even bother with his crappy arguments. It's the only way you can ward off the Garada and mcanime influence for good.
>Spics are people who hate Nagai and Ishikawa.
But it is exactly the opposite. They fuckings love Mazinger, Devilmans, and all their other works. Shit that is why Dynamic products still get ship to Spanish speaking countries.
>They fuckings love Mazinger
HAHAHA good one. They loathed Shin Mazinger. They pretend to love the Toei version of Mazinger and even if they did, Toeizinger is not Nagai.
Same with frogs and Grendizer. They don't care a single bit about Nagai's actual works.
That's why they're spics.
Actually, they only love Toeishit and most OVAs. They hate Dynamic Pro manga or animations that are too similar to said manga.
Anyway, the spic in question is actually an italian shitposter who is behind a large portion of the shitposting in these threads. Hence >>13455623
Why did Mazinger explode with spics anyway? Was it just the only cartoon they got on television for 30 years? Seems strange to me that Mazinger exploded there but isn't so well known outside of there and Japan.
The Italian shitposter is also known as the dago.
Because the new gen gets cred from their parents and older relatives when they do. They all pretend to be huge Mazinfags and even believe their own lies.
Instead of Transformers, they got Mazinger; it's as simple as that. Frogs and mudslimes got Grendizer.
Said statue is a perfect example of how spics are a bunch of pretenders. This is how the statue originally looked like.
And this is how the statue looked after a repaint.
They don't even know which version of Mazinger is which, so the statue ended up being a mix of both original Toei and Shin Mazinger.
Like I said, bunch of pretenders and liars.
I remember a blog post back in 2009 where some spic shat on Shin Mazinger so hard, while immensely praising Gurren Lagann. The spics who replied even agreed unanimously. Sure, Shin may not be the most perfect thing on the planet, but the spic made the show look like it was the worst thing since Plan 9 from Outer Space.
Spics are terrible people. This is why you should call them out every time you see them making a fool out of themselves.
>while immensely praising Gurren Lagann
Oh god "How dare people like what I don't like compare to things I like!" /m/ for once could you stop having opinions that are just for the sake of being contrarian?
Huh, don't think I like the look of Z with blue shins.
Why do you care what they think about Mazinger, anyways? They're on a whole different continent and aren't doing anything actually harmful or that affects you. It's not like they're going to influence the next show or the one after that, they're not the target audience.
And why are you using /pol/'s slurs so much, anyways, you're gonna make them run out at this rate, at least be nice to them about it.
Yea, but that doesn't answer the question. So what if they have shit taste? They're still not the target audience and the one that the companies are going to focus on. Bandai and Dynamic are going to focus on Japan so they can get their profits as unfiltered as possible, send it out to other countries if they think it'll be worth the risk, and only listen to Japan if they even do that. They're no threat to good stuff, and they're not making a lot of noise about it that I've seen.
Then again, I don't hang around blogs that I can't understand, so who knows about that last part.
I'm just gonna make the safe assumption that by "shitting on everything they do" you mean "criticize them".
You can love something and still recognize and question it's flaws. You don't have to suck Nagai's dick to love him.
>the idea of Getter Rays having a will of its own and its ability at assimilation of living organisms.
Yea, but isn't complaining about it for half a thread shitposting too? And that still doesn't have anything to do with how none of the companies care about them.
I didn't really like that plot point, but it helps them make sense, so eh.
>The Getter and Getter G manga were DynaPro's usual manga adaptations of their TV stuff.
>Things really start to pick up in Getter Go, where Ishikawa opts to deviate from the TV series
The trolling is strong in this one
Alright, smartass, how about you tell us what you like so much about Getter Robo?
Also can you even comprehend how dense you seem when you say that mods should ban people for not liking Getter Robo?
/m/ Is 90% Gundam. You think most Gundam fans give a shit about 60s-early 70s super robots, no matter how influential they are?
Do any of >>13454517 >>13456673 >>13456772 look like legitimate criticisms to you?
Oh I get it, you're a spic. If you actually knew English, you wouldn't make such a blatant mistake.
Definitely. Seems like you caught a big one.
>how about you tell us what you like so much about Getter Robo?
Why the fuck do I have to tell you that? I don't need your approval, spic. Who the fuck do you think you are?
>You think most Gundam fans give a shit about 60s-early 70s super robots, no matter how influential they are?
Who the fuck gives a shit about what Gundam fags think? This is a thread about Getter Robo, not magic bots.
Ok, but by the definition of Spic given they have to at least pretend to like Getter in the first place before they shit on it.
Aside from the first mentioned, these just seem like people who don't like Getter Robo.
So which is it? Anyone who dislikes Getter, or Getter fans who don't appreciate it on every level and are willing to acknowledge that it has flaws?
>This is a thread about Getter Robo, not magic bots.
That was a master stroke, bravo. That's some next level shit.
You're talking about banning from /m/ as a whole.
And if you're going to shut down everyone else's evaluations of Getter Robo and not offer anything of your own, your complaints are basically worthless.
If you participate in a Dynamic Pro thread, and try to ruin it for everyone else, you're a spic, regardless of whether you pretend to like Nagai / Ishikawa or not.
If you just dislike Getter Robo and don't participate, then you're just a pretentious yank who think Japanese cartoons are high art.
>not offer anything of your own
Why should I offer anything at all?
I didn't recommend you getter robo. I didn't invite you to read getter robo. I don't do ranking threads comparing every getter robo series ever made. I don't even need to validate my tastes against others.
Don't mistake dpfags for gundamfags.
All I want is that spics leave dynamic pro threads alone and fuck off. Go write your own tumblrina post about how getter robo is amoral somewhere else.
They don't have to be saturday cartoon heroes.
It's just absolutely necessary for a character to have a meaningful goal in order for most readers to become invested in a story.
A character can be bloodthirsty, but they can't JUST be bloodthristy. If their entire personality is "goof who fight good" then they're not a very good character.
There has to be some factor that makes the reader POTENTIALLY capable of getting behind them, or else there's no reason for you to care whether or not they succeed.
Ryouma and Hayato, at the very least, seem like they were just not only dragged into piloting the Getter, but just rolled along with it with their only goal being to fight the bad guys, in spite of having virtually no personal stake in the situation.
So actually, in that sense, they ARE a lot like Saturday morning cartoon heroes, in that they're just fighting for the sake of fighting.
Their stake is survival, Ryoma was established as being desperate for a good fight and completely unmatched by people, now crazy dinosaur niggas are wiping out the species and he has something to do. Hayato is in it because being in the getter is safer than being a civilian fodder. I mean you're very clearly just biased against them for not being typical hero guy characters because you keep omitting musashi from all this when he has even less reason to be there then they do. You just keep calling him an "okay guy" when that has nothing to do with motivation or story or any of the other bullshit you're pretending to care about.
The story is about fucking dinosaurs that went into hiding after the extinction event and now are back to reclaim the earth with cyber hybrids. I mean really, you have that as a premise and you're worried the protagonist doesnt have enough reason to fight. In any case, yea it gets better and you get more relatable characters when you get ot Go.
but still, fuck you
Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention that, for any character in any story, "saving the world" is an unbelievable, generic goal.
Literally everybody has that goal. It's easy for anyone to think "if I were capable, I too would fight this force of evil".
The problem is that that doesn't make it relateable, because most people can't imagine themselves in that scenario on a level that would draw any emotional connection to the situation.
The characters, as individuals, need to at least have a clearly defined thing they're protecting beyond "the entire world". The scale and responsibility of that is far too large for it to be relateable.
That's why I'm more partial to Mazinger Z. Kouji has loved ones who, before the danger even arises, he's shown to very clearly love, and they consistently serve to be the ones he's protecting throughout the story. Hell, he piloted Mazinger from the start to honor his dead grandfather. For I, or any other reader, it's easier to imagine protecting someone you're close to, like family or friends, than the entire planet.
The closest thing any Getter pilot has to that is Ryouma's dad, who he seems to only be honoring in destroying wannabe karate dojos. That's completely unrelated to the story, from that point forward, aside from being the reason for him being so badass.
Hell, it would make sense if they were just in it to protect themselves, but that's never clearly illustrated. That level of selfishness would at least make them more interesting, but you can only assume that they're protecting EVERYTHING that the enemy threatens.
I mentioned before that I'd only read about halfway into the story. I felt that Musashi had been introduced too early to seriously criticize him, so I was leaving him alone on purpose.
Although, Ryouma just being in it to feel challenged again is a decent goal, anyway. I just don't know why that's enough for me to be invested in him as a character. At that point, though, I can't claim that's a genuine criticism, because I assume there are plenty of people who read that and feel genuinely bad for him.
It's too bad that he reaches his goal as soon as the story starts, then.
So I just spent the rest of the night finishing the manga
It picked up pretty well. I came to like the characters just fine less for the reasons I was looking for, and more for their general banter, which humanized them way more than how they felt at the start.
I mean shit, I genuinely felt for Gore by the end of it. To make me sympathize with a villain as dickish and seemingly 2-dimensional as him is a mark of a good story on it's own.
I guess I judged Getter too quickly. I appreciate anyone who just straight-up told me to keep reading, though.
I'm probably not gonna be shitposting about G, but we'll see.
At least read it on Batoto if you're going to be a fag.
>expecting a getter thread
>it's a shitposting thread
>but at least OP changes his way of thinking at the end
good for you OP, hope you can enjoy G and the other parts, Go is where shit hits the fan really hard
Oh fucking please. GGfags and SJWs both think /v/ is a safe-haven for their shitposting.
>unironically calling falseflagging
False-flaggers might as well be what they're pretending to be. If you pretend to be retarded, you might as well actually be retarded.
you guys shouldn't joke about that stuff
a disabled marine veteran was killed by tranny game journalism
>Dynamic Pro hated by spics
Where the fuck are you getting these fucking opinions you newfag
one time my dad and I were going around a little italy with one of his sisters
with the windows down she started hollering about YEAH WHILE WE'RE HERE HOW ABOUT WE GET SOME GOOD DAGO FOOD
Oh, it takes a lot of dedication, and the best way to start is to find a small, but easily irritable fan base like Go Nagai or Dynamic Pro. For being part of a very limited group, they're also really defensive and will try to counter anything you say in the most over the top way as possible, turning themselves into easy targets. And this is the perfect formula for you to achieve success in this kind of job.
No me juntes con esos maricones, yo amo nagai y ishikawa y no estoy jodiendo diciendo que Shin Mazinger fue una mierda, por que Shin Mazinger fue la mejor serie de todas. Y me encanta SKL y Mazinkaiser.
If you really thought spics on /m/ are a myth, and not an actual reality, then you're simply delusional.
These fuckers will attempt to ruin every Nagai thread they find. Call them out for the dirty hispanic scum they really are.
>These fuckers will attempt to ruin every Nagai thread they find. Call them out for the dirty hispanic scum they really are.
Por que los gringos no saben mas de un idioma?
>These fuckers will attempt to ruin every Nagai thread they find. Call them out for the dirty hispanic scum they really are.
I know you're trolling like a little bitch. But what I said before is that do not lump me with hispanics who hate Shin Mazinger and modern super robot shows who keep living on this fantasy la la land where they think 70s TOEI Super robots can never be surpassed. Which is wrong, a lot of "spics" loved the shit out of Shin Mazinger we even got the dub, it's the old "spics" the people you are referring to.
But you can continue to whine like a bitch while I continue to enjoy my super robots. Adios
The irony is that I actually love Shin Mazinger too. And I'm the original spic. And I need to admit, it's amazing what Imagawa did to half-assed shit like the original manga and Z Mazinger. I don't care for Toei Mazinger either, but it's still much more influential to the genre than Nagai's manga. Without it, it probably would never be a franchise of its own in the first place.
Ryoma wouldn't cheat on his qt common law wife
Why do you think he was always screaming and getting violent?
You can't let yourself get so pent up for all those years and expect to come out as anything but a raging force of nature.
Get your head out of your sister's vagina for once, you trailer park trash.
I'm a "spic" and I correct American poster's English on /int/ on a daily basis.
Also, no matter how much you hate Hispanic people, it won't change the fact that literally every single thing you've said about them ITT has been bullshit. Most people here don't care about old mecha anime enough to "hate" them. Most people in my generation only know about Mazinger because people in our parents' generation are familiar with it. There's no reason to hate it, and most people wouldn't go back to watch it, or any other Nagai series.
Cape comics are a better example.
Mazinger Z and Astro Boy (and others, like Speed Racer and Heidi) are about as well known by my parents' generation as characters like Superman, Batman and Captain Marvel are by my grandparents' generation.
I don't know if there's more than one, but there's definitely one autistic faggot that always cries spic whenever he disagrees with someone, regardless of how much sense it makes.
I'd be very surprised if there were many actual spics on this board, so it really annoys me how nonsensical it is. More so than the actual racial slur.
i fucking love Gore and the dino man is prob my fave character in the whole series, but i always prefer G to the original for some reason. It probably because i read it all in one sitting rather then the first one which took me two days to go through.
Regardless tho, Go is fucking brilliant
