The Volcas are pretty good, though the bass is a bit useless next to the keys. But I think, they rather a gadged after all, but they have potential, keep that in mind. Just buy a small mixer, like 5-12 channels, old 80ies/90ies ones can be good too, chances is to stump upon deals is high obv. Some new mixers have built in effects, otherwisely, old stuff off ebay or affordable guitar stompers.
np, btw It doesn't really matter nowadays, wether analog or digital, soundwise. I mean if you wanna have the feel in you or if you wanna mod your stuff, that would be legit reasons. Also , I dont know what kind of stuff you wanna produce, but theres alot of vintage equipment around, roland JX8/3/10 for instance, you migh get to check that out too.

Are there some good vsts for an extremely over the top reverb and a compressor for absolute sidechaining without getting any weird artifacts or clipping sounds?
For all I know this is probably completely possible with the stuff already in ableton, I am quite incompetent.
Honestly It's been so long since I jammed with anyone on guitar or bass so I'm really just going to use what is most comfortable.
Comes stock on the J mascis model. I have since swapped it with a mustang bridge because they're easier to adjust.
I'm not going out of my way to get one but if I see one at a decent price I'll do it. They are fairly limited but I really like their sound.
I may be trading that harmony for a korg dw-8000 if the guy ever answers my calls. Wish it was the rack version.
it is completely possible in ableton, just literally turn everything up to max in Reverb, but take the size to about 7 and pre-delay is irrelevant and put in the compressor after it, turn on sidechaining and take the threshold all the way down and ratio all the way up. the 'clipping' sounds or artifacts you may be hearing are probably from an almost instant attack on your sidechain compressor, it should go away if you turn up the attack time

Does the BS2 respond to velocity on itself? What I mean is, to compare to the Minibrute, the MB can send velocity messages but can't receive them, so when you play it on it's own without a computer, it's just static.
I know the BS2 has velocity sensitive keys and aftertouch, I'm wondering if I played it with no computer, can I still get a range of velocities in it? Or does it only send messages (when used as, say, a controller on a computer, but doesn't react to the messages itself with no computer present)?
It's not really a bass synth just 'cause it's called the bass station. It has a full octave range.
The minitaur is a true bass synth. And yeah, again, I know they're velocity sensitive, I'm wondering if they can trigger velocity in the box, instead of just sending messages to a computer as a controller.
If anyone could point me to where I could find out, I'd greatly appreciate it (not just that they're vel sens, but that it's actually got velocity ITB). Google wasn't much help.
Leads and pads can be monophonic too, though.
Plus there's always multitracking/overdubbing. I own one of these babies, I'm gonna have lots of fun combining the two and then recording it through my Laney TF-300 and SM58 :)

It's got a nice creamy filter, idk why you'd say that. The only thing that really bothers me about it is that it doesn't have those knobs that have the lights around them that can turn infinitely, it just has regular knobs. So values from presets jumping around when you switch between presets worries me.

I like the idea, but I really can't find myself getting hyped about outboard drum machines. The ease of routing is probably one of the best things about doing it in the box and I just can't imagine what a hassle it would be to get the same effect with the one out on the Rhythm Wolf.

Always wanted one. But not only for bleeps but also for the psych-y effects in a band.
About 1k budget (euros). the only musts are it has to be as wide as possible and the keys have to have some kind of feedback.
for the people who posted with mixers in their set ups, do you use those when you're recording? cus a usb mixer won't allow you to have separate tracks per channel right? or are you using it for layered sounds/controler etc?

literally ins't even important in 99% of situations. it technically does have MIDI out, it sends MIDI through USB. velocity and everything.
why not just get the bsii then? for only $200 more you get so many more features, two analog oscillators + sub osc, patch memory, midi i/o, non-minikeys, multiple VCF's, really nice filter distortion and osc filter mod, etc etc.
One of the main reasons Im buying the brute is because its simplicity. As a total noob to the synth world the Microbrute seems simple enough for me to grasp the basics of synthesis but still packs the power to make some beautiful sounds.
If someone handed me a BSII or a Virus or any "entry level" +500$ synth I could not take full advantage of their sonic capabilities (or it would take me a lot of time at least). The Microbrute seems like a nice and cheap stepping stone

the bsii is pretty damn simple to use, but I can understand. i've been using VA VST's for a couple of years now, so the bsii seems perfect for me as a first analog synth, and can be incorporated pretty damn easily into more expensive purchases down the line.
it's just got such huge fucking balls when it comes to the bass, and has a really creamy filter. so much great sound and features for the price, i've also found some "like new" ones for $400 that i'll probably get instead of brand new.
Funny, how I never hear anyone ever talk about it. Maybe because it's a boutique sort of analog synth? I've heard it's got better low-end than the minitaur, which is saying a lot imo.
What's with the VCO1+2 thing, though? Also what the hell is (LFO and Env Gen) "INT"?
Ah, gotcha. Just a single knob for mix and VCO 2 detune, though (can't control the levels separately, but probably not that big of a deal).
It looks solid, though. Analogueheaven puts it at around $600, though I've seen it going for slightly under $500 if you know where to look.
Would love to hear if anyone has any experience with it. I never really hear it talked about so idk whether it's worth the purchase over other analog synths we've been discussing or not.
I've got one. As far as sounds go, it's absolutely fantastic, especially if you like the sounds of old Roland SH series monos which it can be compared to. The filter is very Moog-like. I like it for its ability to make the kind of sounds that might be heard on AFX's Analord series.
Modulation options are limited but it can be expanded with a modular dock and eurorack modules. I think they go for around £350 here in the UK but I picked mine up for £300 and for the quality of sound I think it's worth every penny.

It may be more expensive taking import charges from Germany into account, I'm not sure. They're definitely cheaper than the Minitaur in the UK though.
I mainly want it for analog VCO bass anyways. Modulation isn't a concern of mine, I'd just mod it with my PC and DAW or otherwise sample it and do all of the processing and fx with my PC. Don't really intend on ever going modular, considering the expense.

They make magnets aaa kids toys that make that sound. They come in all sorts of different shapes. You toss ten into the air and they pull towards each other. The sound of them bouncing of and attracting back off of each other creates an oscillation that sounds just like that.

No, but a a previous slim phatty owner, I can tell you that they're real pots that are digitally multiplexed. There's no clicking, and they hit a dead stop like a regular pot, it's not an endless encoder.
I can also tell you I miss the shit out of it and you'll be impressed if you get one.
Yeah but it doesn't pick up the value until you move the encoder over the value, so it doesn't have jumping problems.
I'm still torn about it since I've heard they have tuning problems. I recently got a good new job and won't have enough for that price point of synths so I have a couple of weeks to decide.
I had a really low serial number (443), didn't really run into any tuning problems beyond the typical need to warm up like any other VCO synth. TBH I have more tuning issues with the microbrute. I wish arturia didn't put the tuner on the back and make it recessed, whenever I tune it, pushing it back in puts it out of tune again.
On the Slim Phatty, the tuner is right where it needs to be. If tuning is really a problem for you, there's also an auto-tune mode.
It's not really a beef I have with the micro, it's just my way of saying how minimal of a problem tuning is for the SP.
Why would you get both the Pulse 2 and the BSII though? They both seem to cover that same ground.

Anybody have any suggestions for a first synth in the $200-$300 range? Having a built in keyboard isn't necessary since I have a decently good electric piano. Preferably something with knobs and dials I can fuck around with.
I like Alicia's Keys. Simple but full of good sounds. Other people have mentioned other plugins, but I find that tons of parameters make for great synths, but not great piano plugs.

I combine it with clever reverbs and layer it with a simple subtractive synth for pads, use it straight for leads. The secret to both is evolving sounds though. FM synthesis doesn't sound too great without envelopes

heard you can get some pretty unique sounds out of it, is that all it's good for or can it do more bread and butter stuff?
not really imo. it's nice and all to have the tactile experience and all but most VA gear is very overpriced at retail (virus, nord).
microbrute. while most of arturia's classic synth emulations are mediocre at best (except for spark, which surprisingly is the best drum machine VST i've ever used), their hardware however is very respectable.
We don't. We hate pointless digital synths like analog emulating plugins, or vastly underpowered digital synths like the microkorg. I love my digital synths, but I'm not going to waste my time with trying to nail a sound that they don't manage well anyways, when I could be doing cooler things with digital synths.

i love digital synths. their unique palette and the fact they're really good for effects and distortion is rad. i use FM synths almost exclusively for my synth-gaze type stuff.

That's subjective. Besides, what's the point of trying to keep plugins in the past chasing a dream that they won't have? I'd rather see digital do more impressive things that a 40 year old synth can't already do.
there's plenty of room for both types of synths.
personally, i think synths like DiVA & LuSH-101 have come _impeccably_ close in their emulations, and there's been many blind A:B tests on communities like gearslutz and KVR that correlate that opinion. they bring great sound to the table but they also improve upon hardware too in flexibility, and at same time you also have synths like Zebra, Absynth, Aalto, and Alchemy that do exactly what you ask for.
i can totally see where you're coming from by wanting to see developers push towards the future and explore new ground, but analog emulation synths (when done well) don't hurt anyone by bringing their sound to the table.
