>tfw my bassist is a p4k drone a hardcore fagtano fan.
Musician Feels General
Fuck yo musician feels, time for some roadie feels!
>load all your heavy ass equipment into the van
>take it to the gig
>unload all that heavy ass equipment
>set it all up
>double check everything
>triple check everything
>you get up on stage, everyone cheers you on
>you do your little song and dance and the girls show you their tits
>you go backstage and get your dick sucked
>I pack everything back up and haul it away to your next gig
>I do all the hard work
>you do jack shit
>not one person notices my existence
>everyone sucks your dick
>all band ads in city are for breakdowncore chug riff stuff
>see a new post to start a band influenced by PiL and Big Black
>go to message the guy
>fb cover is le epic needle drop fartano meme
>been making music for a long while now, like more than 7 years, just tinkering away
>ive shown improvement each time i get something done
>feeling im racing against time, i want to get my ideas down fast and get everything done
>lately i havent been able to sleep because im wanting to get shit down and the drugs
>each time i try to get something down i feel empty or burned out
>force myself to record something to maybe edit it later
>do this alot and end up with alot of shit
>dont want to sleep or quit, but im not getting any excitement as i used to when i first started
>but the excitement and vision is there as i vision the finished product, i have some idea that still wants to get out.
>each time i decide to work, i feel tired from the loss of sleep and burned out or warped.
>i dont want to quit and time is ticking.
>i have to get something done and get it finished
>my record is 30 minutes of material in 2 weeks albeit minimal and less structured.
>i want to be able to make alot of shit in a short amount of time with feeling and thought.
>look at techniques or ways to make my computer come up with melodies and rhythms so i can work with it later.
I heard there are programs out there that play your vsts with calculations and shit and monkey drummers to help you out.
I want my machines to make music so i can sleep and get some rest
>Mfw my two bandmates only listen to Arctic Monkeys, Eric Clapton and Royal Blood
>tfw work my ass off in college to get a BMus
>get a decent job, doing what I studied
>after a few years get kinda bored, decide to get more into STEM
>bust my ass and go into foreverdebt doing 2-year masters degree
>tfw employers want to hire me into jobs based on my work experience and BMus
>go right back to my old job
I remember problems like that from high school, but I eventually found a core group of other music nerds.
I don't know what your town is like, but since I moved out of the suburbs I haven't had any trouble finding people to collaborate with. People looking to collab are everywhere.
>mfw my band's singer wants us all to wear matching outfits
More like they leech their success off the roadies - every artist is absolutely useless without their equipment. Sure, they can play acoustic without me....but that's not gonna carry very far without sound and stage setup.
Speaking of stage, all the fancy lights and video screens and fog machines .... all of that is done to make the artist look good.
Guess who does that?
That's right, the roadie does that.
Artists can't even play at local bars without sound equipment.....and guess who sets that up for them?
No musician could ever leave his bedroom without a roadie.
Did you have a roadie leave you high and dry on the set or are you always this cheerful towards everyone?
I know roadies are stupid, but you're a special kind of stupid. Anybody can lift gear, including the musicians, as that's what my band does. You're not special, and why you feel like you deserve something only shows that you have an entitlement complex.
Guess who is better qualified to operate music equipment? The musician!
Guess who knows where the amps are actually supposed to go? The musician!
Guess who is the important person? The musician!
Guess what is the only reason you're even there? The musician!
By some weird grace of the musician you work for, they still allow you to get into their shows for free, despite having the most whiny, entitled, and self absorbed roadie on the planet.
What planet are you from, and why do they hold roadies in such high regard compared to earth? You are aware that your job is there to simply streamline what the musician already did before you, right? Youre basically a laborer.
You're both wrong.
Most artists don't know the first thing about music equipment outside of their instruments - that's for the mixer to handle. The mixer tells the roadie where to put and point shit, and is in charge of making sure the artist doesn't sound as godawful as they actually are.
The mixer is what makes or breaks a performance, and is even less recognized than the roadie.
Fuck both of you.
Fuck you, idiot. We're called live sound engineers, the mixer is that board we run everything though. And most engineers are *gasp* musicians too! Don't lump all musicians into the singer-songwriter tier of music knowledge, I've met plenty who don't know about mixing a whole band, but still know where to place a cab and mic.
You're right about roadies, they don't know shit unless it's told to them.
>in charge of making sure the artist doesn't sound as godawful as they actually are
It's true - most artists (especially in the hip hop or pop world) sound TERRIBLE without the mixer
>using the technical term
>not knowing music slang
How long you been in this business, son?
If dubs, every artist in this thread has to do all their own work without roadies or sound engineers
>play in a dangerously post punk revivalist band
>frontman demands we all wear all black or he has a diva fit
as if we didn't sound cliched enough
>tfw done a bunch of demos
>endlessly mixing them
>so afraid to send to labels
I think you know what you have to do anon
>Want to start the ultimate fusion of Psychedelic Drone and heavy Noise Rock that will blow everyone in my hardcore and three chord punk centric local scene's minds but have to move back to town first and spend the first couple of months there getting a job and shit so it will be at least three months before our first show
labels dont care about production quality, thats part of why they are there. they know you dont have access to professional mixing stuff.
send them your demos unmixed or at least not mixed too much and they'll judge based off of talent/catchiness or whatever
I need some advice
so I'm pretty shit at guitar and piano and have no money to take lessons
how should I go about learning? I only know four chords on guitar and I suck at strumming
my end goal is to join some band or write shitty songs
>tfw booking gent contacted me to play a opulent local venues around my area
>made all of my music on a laptop and too poor to buy equipment to do the show
>tfw no one wants to play music like Fugazi
>tfw you're stuck in a shitty "funk-reggae" band with a bunch of white stoner bros
>mfw i'm the bassist in DIIV
>mfw I never get to control the music in the car because I can't into driving because from NYC
>mfw even Sky gets to change the music when she wants to and she can't drive either
Nah, it's cool. I'll just smoke all the weed in the car and keep my mouth shut while we listen to Arthur Russell's entire fucking discography for the 19th time.
Could be worse.
>tfw wanna start a band
>want to make a folk punk/lo-fi sound
>all of the former bandmates are either into BVB/ADTR or into super prog/classical stuff.
>can not find middle ground with any of them.
>last attempt to make a band failed when the #1 dream theater fan drummer got into a fist fight with the pop-punk guitarist.
>never will I travel the states, play in people's garages and at squats and enjoy the hard life of an anarchist punk
>try to write a happy song
>it becomes a depressing drone heavymind bullshit
>set off writing a song about a glorious voyage to the stars
>ends up being about two kids dying in a car accident
there is an expression
"good artists borrow, great artists steal"
no one will ever have the same combination of influences you have. thus you are free to take bits and pieces from, them and mold them together
>tfw full of ambition
>too much ambition to handle
>working on a massive black metal solo-project and learning all these new instruments / vocal styles / how to produce the damn thing
>also trying to start off a power pop band with whatever musicians I can find but its really mostly the "best of a bad situation"
>tfw also have this unquenchable obsession with JonTron and want to make a similar kind of show but need to really step up my editing game
>Australian summer is in one month and exams will be over and Ill have no excuse not to pursue this
>Have the privilege of still being at home with folks at 20 and my limited work hours in my casual job ALL go towards whatever the fuck I want
>the conditions are perfect for me to achieve these goals but im such a fucking scatterbrain I dont know how to manage myself and organise my time
>tfw I kinda wish I wasnt so ambitious so I could be satisfied with a simpler life.
Man, how do I be more organised. How do I strtucture my life? the clock is ticking and I feel like Im fuckin wastin it and killing my own dreams
>only thing you're good at is music
>but you're not good enough
>all you can write are boring pop songs that nobody will ever find interesting
>no drive or motivation
>never played a gig
>you have friends who play music and you jam all the time but you're always just playing the same songs of your own over and over again
>you will never be as cool as your idols
>enjoy writing lyrics and rarely have a writers block
>bad at making guitar to go with it
>got lots of new listens on bandcamp
>oh boy oh boy where are they coming from
>realize it was myself, playing without being logged in
What I did was just sing and listen to my singing, and change things until I didn't sound like total crap. I play instruments and have at least a somewhat decent ear so I dunno if that will work for everyone.
Definitely listen to what you sing with a critical ear, notice what you don't like, try to fix it. What you hear as you talk/sing isn't an accurate representation of what you sound like. A mic with a monitor is ideal, but before I had that I would just sing into my phone and record it, then play it back
>tfw you will never fart in the couch while your grimes qt gf is on the toilet and let her sit in it to make her feel warm
>be me 19
>play music all my life
>suck at songwriting
>can jam out some really cool sounding stuff sometimes
>but only when I'm alone
>tfw someone walks into the room while I'm playing and I start fucking up hardcore
>tfw I can't play at all in front of anyone
