My favorites right now is Lydian and Harmonic Minor. Chord progressions in Harmonic Minor are pretty spooky.
I like Lydian in combination with maj7 chords

Hello /prod/, a while back I asked for advice over mixing a remix/cover I was doing of a Touhou song, and now I'm back with another remix and I'm looking for advice. I don't have any particular problems this time around, but I'm in the finishing up composition/starting to mix stage and I want feedback before I give it off to the people I need to give it to.

my band mate does
but he writes most of our latest stuff, i record it, mix and do the rest.
i can write music too, but for now this is how we work. i use ableton 9
we make most of my risers/buildups using sylenth, (nothing special)

Yeah man, I'm a big fan of Kimba and Leo, and i kinda know the producing side of it. But now i'm recording so it's completely diffrent process it seems. And I don't even know who Boards of Canada are tbh lol
so many instruments already, and i haven't even added most of the percussion section (marimba, chimes, triangle, ruthe, glock, xylophone...)
Do you come up with music in your dreams, or at least hear music you've not heard before? I feel like I have a few times but I can never remember what it sounded like in the slightest. One of my old teachers claimed that all of his best songs came from dreams. he would play them or hear them in his dreams and recreate whatever he could remember since he had great aural skills. I can't remember my dreams though, and my aural memory is very shit.
bounce all your tracks, start a new project, and produce in there. save the midis in another project or whatever, or you can just do it in one session, and disable all vsts after you have bounced your tracks

You serious about Boards of Canada? Holy shit, well props on making that then because its such a pretty chord progression. On your track, it could be cleaned up a little and the arpeggiated bell things aren't exactly in tune with the pads, unless you want it like that. I immediately assumed you were influenced by them.
Ive been trying to find out which song it is because I can't remember exactly. There is this one but I'm not sure if it's the one I was thinking of at first.
I just wanted some vocals to add some variety, and also some more melody. I could always shave out frequencies. if you want to add something that would be cool, I really have no specific sound in mind
my comp seems to be handling it fine, no underruns or anything.

I'm still not very good at playing it, and if you dont have high pressure on the bellows it sounds a bit out of tune. certainly has character though...
Does anyone prefer to be limited by the number of music tools they use? With a DAW the possibilities are endless and this can mean very good things but it can also prevent someone from making anything of real value. If you can only have so many tracks at a time, only up to 1/16 notes(step sequencers), no time stretching(my damned mpc2000), only ROM sounds with no editing capabilities, etc, you have to really work for what you want to make. Music produced with certain gear also can have its own sound as a result of certain limitations, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Sometimes you have to use stuff like that to be able to really appreciate the power of a DAW.

If you really wanted something like a 303, you could use this D16 303 emulation plugin with a midi control surface and map all the controls. You could turn off your computer monitor or whatever and at least pretend like you have 303.
I prefer to be limited to using only the hardware I own because I'm incapable of producing inside a DAW without it turning into a massive clusterfuck because I go balls to the wall with every VST I have installed.

you could try sonatina symphonic orchestra
its passable, but for realism you need to be using the good libraries that are usually .nkc or .ewi files and require something like Kontakt or Play to work. there is a cracked version of Kontakt you can get, in the OP pastebin

Right now I'm working on honing my skills as a keyboard and bass player. I need to get more hardware as well, as I'd like to do as much as I can off the computer.
I think I'd like to make some synth-pop with a sort of glam-rock, and baroque feel to it. Tried enrolling in a keyboard class this semester but they're all full zzzz. Also need some more gear, All I have is a Roland sh-201, a digital piano and a drum machine

Have you tried listening to it in mono? I have the feeling the main synth would mostly cancel out. You don't want that.

I remember this. it's still pretty bad, that snare is awful, and the synths are corny. but you're only a month in right? don't worry, my first midi music was horrid. put in work, and learn, then start sharing your music, so you know how to learn from criticism, and how to understand producer lingo
Mix is completely fine. I don't think you should bother much with mixing techniques at your stage. Instead just have fun and make cool sounds. Don't worry about what your music sounds like in relation to the "musical world". There are a ton of techniques to make interesting production and I think that's worth more. Try this, automate anything and honestly everything if you feel like it.
I want that too, but I don't even know what genre I should lean to, I have a fun time making whatever, but I don't really know what my "sound" is you know?maybe around 2016 i'll drop something for me couple of fans
I wouldn't use a microkorg. Pretty much anything is better, but I haven't kept up with new models or how much they cost.
My first synth was a Korg Poly 800 II. I wouldn't recommend one of those either.

I really haven't been able to think up a way to progress the song after that, I feel like a 'breakdown' or some kind of interlude (using a wash out transition?) is in order. I didn't know how the heck to end either it so I just slapped that in.
I could try to change the snare sample and edit the synth samples too. And to think I had the idea of ''wow its finally kinda finished maybe now I can finally upload it to soundcloud". I've just kinda been working on this track for like a 2 weeks (mostly trying to mix it correctly) that I want it to be over with lol. Thanks, though.
Thanks, I think I might switch back to pirated Ableton for a while as soon as I get my novation launchkey 49. Super excited to finally have a midi controller!
Also, use automation to carry the song along. Do what you can to convey your ideas more clearly. Like you're spelling it out for someone. Emphasize song transitions with effects automation. Like increasing the amount of reverb of a track exponentially right before a new part comes in or something. Its not subtle and its not necessarily "cool" but it will be coherent and make sense.

I mean if it's out of phase between the left and right channels, they'll negate and you'll hear nothing when it's summed to mono. Yours doesn't sound like that exactly, but whatever effect you've got on it might still sound shitty when mixed down to mono. I have a hunch that it will sound shitty; it's got that kind of sound...

In attempts to create the most dark deep ambient meme hook, I combined a Stockenhausen sample with some 19th century Russian poem recital.
If I had 500 bones to spend on a synth I would go for a Bass Station II myself, haven't actually tried one but it looks really neat and quite versatile.
With creative use of effects you can go a decent ways with them, stay away from the Keys though.
I own one and I gotta say I would have rather spent the 150$ on a Bass than the Keys, although I really like the delay, there's no external input for me to use it with anything else but the Keys.
I'd really recommend picking an instrument - perhaps bass (everyone is constantly looking for bassists to play with; most genres aren't really demanding on bass player technique). Pick a genre (I'd recommend either blues or classic rock, the structure of both should be drilled into your head by now), listen to a few songs, start to play along. Realize that there is a chord sequence in every song, that the chords have relationships between each other.
Then you can realise that a thing called "scales" exist - basically a set of notes that go together - which have a certain special relationship with the chord sequences (some fit, some don't, some sound good, some do too, but in a different way).
Paralell to that, you will also see how rhythm works - starting from the basics (measures, how many notes can you fit there, note lengths), continuing to genre specific stuff (some genres have strict rules on which instruments can play on which measures, for example).
This may not be the fastest approach, but definitely the most fun one, and definitely the most thorough one. In my opinion, composers and producers who have previous experience with playing instruments in a band (preferably with multiple instruments) grasp new concepts of genres much, much quickly.
