How do these guys even make money if they put up all their albums on the internet for free?
Everything they do seems to be on a shoestring budget. Are they financially viable?
Hardly anyone makes any money from iTunes,
unless you're as famous as Taylor Swift not putting your music isn't a big loss.
In fact it's probably not worth the hassle for most artists, their main streams of revenue will be merchandise/physical album sales and touring.
God they are such fucking drama queens but I guess you can't deny that they've never done anything that wasn't on their own terms.
I guess I can respect that, if only in a "Well you're all dicks but at least you're dedicated" sort of way.
I'm pretty sure DG makes money off the merchandise they sell and off touring. For most artists, their touring is where they get the most money from since record labels make money off album sales.
They're from Sacramento, people don't use money there - photosynthesis, meth, and never, ever willing to admit xhardcorex is dead - which is probably a good thing, if you like where Da Grips are coming from.
Isn't Stefan just the cutest
This was never confirmed was it though
I know Ride and Isaac don't talk to him for whatever reason and Ride took his mother's last name because he hated him so much but it was never confirmed why
>fucking drama queens
No the drama queens are the ones who overreact when they simply don't show up to a show or decide not to tour.
They literally just do NOTHING, it's everybody else who make it out to be a big fucking deal.
This is Stefan now known as MC Ride. My oldest. Issac used to call him Stetto as a toddler. They remiond me of Zeke and me in their relationship. As long as they are together they both will do well. Naomi did one hell of a job raising these two boys. I will always love her for that and other reasons.
>"Oooh look at us leaking our own album, we're so rebellious"
>"Oooh look at us breaking up instead of touring with NIN, you never know what we'll do next"
>"Ooooh we may not even show up to any of the shows on our own tour, we just don't care about our fans!!!"
That band lives off drama, it's like their life blood.
Following this up, they work remarkably similar to how OF worked at the beginning of their career. Creating drama, controversy and spectacle was how they managed to get everyone on board with their schtick, it's just that OF's music never lived up to the hype they created and they deflated due to that.
DG hasn't made this mistake, they live up to their own hype through doing generally unconventional shit musically so they never really deflate their own hype balloon.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it certainly makes them entertaining but their image is probably going to get boring eventually.
as a guy who has been in the music industry for a while, i gotta say, a lot of the antics that people credit death grips with aren't really a thing.
the most alarming thing they do is not following the conventions that already exist. in practice most of their "stunts" are simple actions made for simple reasons. they cancel shows because they don't feel like playing them or have other things they want to do. lots of acts do this, it just usually comes with an excuse or an apology. but seriously who cares, it doesn't change the fact that the show isn't happening, so fuck that noise.
they don't give interviews probably because doing music interviews is the worst. the questions are always vapid shit that has nothing to do with music. usually it's the same questions over and over. most music journalism focuses on stuff like controversy, anecdotes, personal life shit, and aesthetics.
they aren't communicative, sociable, commercial, or public. none of these qualities have jack shit to do with music. they make music and that's it. the fact that it's outrageous for a band to simply make music and then give it out for free without fanfare is pretty silly if you think about it. it's like if there was a bakery where they just handed out cookies and people thought they were crazy assholes because they didn't suck your dick at the same time.
>Well my dad works at Nintendo and he thinks you're a load of shit.
I can see where you're coming from but DG really fan the flames on whatever small thing they do so even if they are doing these things for simple reasons, the upheaval they create over those things is what has driven the band to the level of fame and spectacle they are at now.
They're pretty obviously doing well, considering they've bucked most conventional releases and press as a band. Zach sports RO sneakers, and MC Ride is wearing some extremely rare visvim in that painting photo. Like that kimono/jacket is probably worth $2k~
all I know is that his brother is a gamer and he used to go on the deep web hence the album name and is almost ten years younger than him and has been on 4chan since he was 14 and is MTGfag
so it's most likely not intended to be seen by strangers. it's an oversight, and people are exploiting it to pry into someone's private life, who has "no interest in sharing [his] personal life with the world".
God damn I started to tear up.
I hope Stefan and his dad manage to work things out. As someone who was practically abandoned by my father I must say to see him so heartfelt and longing is... Idk sad and desirable.
God damn /mu/
>tfw it was originally scheduled that Godspeed You! Black Emporer, Death Grips, and NIN would perform in one night
>DG break up
>Trent is a baby
>be NiN or Soundgarden
>started from the underground, toured and made own way, was hugely successful, now a kind of 'elder statesman'
>ii.e. critically irrelevant and know it
>still huge live draw
>decide to give a young, hungry and innovative act unheard of (for them) exposure
>be excited for them
>be excited to troll your own fans a little by throwing something innovative in their face
>imagine yourself opening for GnR or Poison in 1990 and how their fans would react
>band completely fucks it off for whatever reason
>defending Trent Reznor with such tenacity
yeah, they should have had the balls to fuck with those crowds - not by being deliberate trolls, just by doing what they do and leaving stadiums full of gen X dad wondering what the fuck happened before they saw Spoonman and I Want to Fuck you Like An Animal.
Of course that would have taken a lot more work....
To be fair to DG, they probably only just realised after they decided to tour with them that they were not the sort of artists they should play with.
Like if it actually had happened I could imagine they would have gotten shit thrown at the or something. I mean no one wants to play in front of, talk to or be near the sort of people who pay actual money to see Soundgarden.
Like after they signed the contract they googled 'Soundgarden' and were like 'oh shit guys, maybe we should have read this?'
c'mon man, you can't tell me they didn't know what and who they signed up for. They just got scared
They probably had their hang ups while doing it but convinced themselves it was a good idea.
Only after doing it did they realize the error of their ways plus touring with Soundgarden and NIN doesn't do much for their image.
they must make something.... there records are available at basically every record store, and people are buying.
plus... pic vaguely related
Opening for a tour like that is a shit deal from the get go, I don't know why they even considered it.
For starters an arena setting sucks for any band used to small venues, and and add to that the minimal amount of stage they'd be allowed playing in front of Soundgarden and NiNs setups, not to mention sound guys that don't give a fuck, even if it was possible to make them sound good in those venues.
Any smaller band opening for big name bands is going to be tolerated or ignored at best on these type of tours and even more so if its a new innovative band opening for established to the point of being banal mainstream acts.
They would have busted their fucking asses to complete indifference, impatience and anoyance from the entire crowd.
I get why they bowed out, but what the fuck made them consider it in the first place?
