ITT: 4AD. I've seen them called the favourite label of many people on here, and I love many artists they had signed in the 80's - Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil (know they're not technically a band but still) but I'm very unimpressed by many of their currently signed ones. I'm talking Future Islands, Warpaint, U.S girls etc. I think Daughter are pretty decent but nothing distinct and unique like what they had going on in the 80's. Am I missing something? What are the best artists currently signed to them?
my waifu is on there but this >>55516719
Gang Gang Dance is probably the best of their current roster off the top of my head, though they haven't released anything in a few years.
Pic related is one of the best of the decade for me.
Maybe >>55516719 is right, but one of their best signed bands currently would be The National
>Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares
First time I heard them was in a world music class, talking about how they're a product of the Socialist government, so my perspective of them is a bit weird.
I don't know about 4D current ones except for Ariel Pink, but like you said they were one of the best.
My other favorite labels: Beggars Banquet, Maldoror, Mi-Mort, Durtro, Coptic Cat, L.A.Y.L.A.H Antirecords, World Serpent, New European Records, Einsengrau, Rough Trade, Come Organisation, Some Bizarre, Threshold House, Ectopic Ents, Nettwerk, Metropolis, Nothing Records.
I've been checking them out while doing the rounds on /mu/. I've picked up Ariel Pink, Scott Walker and Purity Ring in terms of their current artists. Pink and Walker are pretty unique so they do have their moments.
Warpaint are a pretty good band. Especially live. The Fool and Exquisite Corpse are great although I have to admit the s/t was a bit of a letdown.
Along with The Wolfgang Press the 2 most underrated 4AD acts ever.
Yup. Regardless of how many people try to peg The National as dad rock or snoozecore, I think they're fantastic. They've got one hell of a streak going for their discography, too. In addition to Daughter, they're my favorite 4AD acts. Couldn't really care less about the rest of their catalog.
Kudos to 4AD, though, for repressing Red House Painters this year.
Same goes for pretty much every single label in existence.
The transfer of the music industry to digital media hasn't been good for anyone.
Still, I'd say 4AD are the most prevelant out of all those dinousaur indie labels
