>>55564181 It's great fun. Every episode is a sort of pastiche of Western and Hong Kong cinema stuff. One episode will be a light hearted comedy romp, the next will be violent Cyberpunk or Film Noir worship. Good dub too, which is a plus, and the original soundtrack is fucking stunning for a TV series. Go for it.
Not the animation. The animation's still fucking glorious. It's the story. The absolute bullshit was the last half hour of Akira was more tolerable when there was nothing else like Akira. Nowadays, it just ruins the whole movie.
>>55564499 >Watch the movie, then read the manga, both are at the peak of anime and manga. There's an argument to be made for the manga, but aside from the animation Akira has no claim to being regarded as the "peak" of anime. The story is a mess.
>>55564499 it's also most relevant to /mu/, in terms of ost quality tbh
is there anything else that has minimalist/tribal percussion scores? if written for gamelan or marimbas or some bell instruments, that would be perfect. even if the anime turned out to be bad i'd love to know
>>55564634 >It was a bad adaptation of a good story. It's far from perfect, but claiming it to be a mess is either an indication of something you lack or you just had it running in the background while you where picking your butt.
>>55564684 See, to me Jin Roh has a huge problem, Oshii can't make his characters humans (The only one movie of him where you can feel empathy for the characters is Patlabor 1) I love his style but, in his style, the characters feels always cold. And Jin Roh is a lot based on the feels of the characters, which doesn't work very good here because of Oshii's style of narration.
>>55564690 Legend of the Galactic Heroes is animated like pure shit, most people seems to forget that, animation is still very important in a medium called ANIME. But apart from that, it's really great yeah. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is meh for me. Mamoru Hosoda is overrated, it's definitely a good movie, but the peak of japanese animation ? No way
>>55564773 No it's not just meh. Mamoru Hosoda is a piece of shit. Seriously, choosing the girl who fucking leapt through time as the peak of anime movies with all of the good shit out there? This guy must be 14 or something.
For me it's the first GITS movie, Perfect Blue, End of Evangelion and Akira. That Cowboy bebop movie was good fun too.
>>55564948 Didnt see your post since i'm doing something else while browsing /mu/. I always thought Millennium Actress direction was confusing, unlike Perfect Blue. But that debate is irrevelant as it is just personal preference, the important fact is that, overall, Kon's work is seen as remarkable.
However, everything Hosoda did is just plain mediocre to me, and in every aspect. It's like the guy is not inspired at all, he's just doing work.
>tfw hearing Paranoid Android as the closing to Ergo Proxy damn man. Best anime series are: Eva FLCL Ergo Proxy There's a lot of other great shit in the medium, but those are the peak. >le all anime is trash face I can count the number of "experimental" western tv shoes on one hand. This is not a good thing.
>>55565983 It's the perfect over the top anime. Gurren Lagann was pretty excellent too, FLCL can be replaced with that if you really don't like it. >dull music Maybe from a pure soundtrack standpoint, yeah, it's just ok JRock, but the music always fit so fucking great with the show it doesn't matter. Watch the first episode again, especially the first scene with Haruko.
>>55566072 >it's just ok JRock >fit so fucking great so, fittingly mediocre? I absolutely loathed gurrenn lagann, so here's where i get the impression your just a weeb, since my opinion is clearly fact >>55566153 and what is it in the grand scheme of things? shit, i imagine
>>55564181 Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Space Dandy Ping Pong Big O Mobile Fighter G Gundam Serial Experiments Lain Guerran Lagann Evangelion (Overated but still watch it) Madoka Magica Akira Tekkonkinkreet Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Lone Wolf And Cub Otoyomegatari
Anime and manga are fun as fuck dude, don't get hung up on the medium of what you like. There's a lot of great anime/manga out there I put off watching because I thought it was all (bad) shonen and moeshit.
If you're 13, maybe. Steins;Gate isn't terrible per se, but it embodies so much of what is wrong with anime. Fucking abysmal character writing in particular.
>Any Miyazaki movie
Not ANY Miyazaki movie, but some of them would be good. Most of his are at least decent.
>Ignore elitists who tell you these are shit
Good thing I'm not an elitist - just someone with actual taste.
Really though, the best possible gateway drug anime - and I'm not saying these are the best anime overall - are:
Cowboy Bebop Death Note Fullmetal Alchemist Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Ghost in the Shell (original movie or Stand Alone Complex both work) A Miyazaki movie, preferably Princess Mononoke or My Neighbour Totoro. Some of his pre-Ghibli TV shows would work too, like Future Boy Conan or Lupin III.
It really is. It's not perfect by any stretch (the comedy is both unfunny and misplaced), but it's definitely one of the best action series out there.
The real question isn't whether you should check it out, it's whether you should check out the original, or Brotherhood. Which is a really difficult question to answer, because both have their own merits.
>>55568057 wasn't dandy just naive/silly fun? i'm about halfway in, but i'm more fond of something more dramatic and emotional maybe? something about ping pong doesn't really look appealing, but who knows. will look into kaiba as well, thanks
>>55568151 Space Dandy's season 1 is mostly just silly fun with a few somber moments. Season 2 is a marked improvement, funnier than the first season but with a lot of emotional episodes. And the contrast between the sadder bits of Space Dandy and the humorous bits are intentional, it's all but spelled out in an episode. There's more going on there than you might think. In addition the guy from Kaiba does the animation for a few more episodes in season 2 and it's beautiful. Ping Pong's animation is a love it or hate it thing, personally I love how it looks in motion.
>>55566569 >fittingly mediocre The music and what's going on fit superbly. >absolutely loathed gurren lagann must be tough being an absolute fucking pleb >your just a weeb damn, and illiterate too. Anime isn't perfect, and they have a lot of pandering shit, but it's better than western television by a landslide. The only cerebral TV shows ever released in the west were Twin Peaks and The Wire, and thats fucking depressing.
>>55569341 >Best live action television America, the Brits are great too >Best animated show Japan >Best music depends on specific genres >best literature America and Russia >best film depends again on what type of movie
>>55569587 enjoyment of any media should have nothing to do with other titles of said media unfortunately people are retarded, which is why you get weebs, anti-weebs, britbongophiles, leronggeneration, games are for children faggots, gaming faggots, and fuck, just about every single contrarian on this board
>>55569786 Right, i know about people who basically only watches anime, like they will rather watch countless of hours of really bad anime than to watch some good live action shows or good american cartoons
So, a few days ago, someone recommended me to watch Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad because it had a baller-ass soundtrack. I didn't want to watch it, so I read the whole thing and I was hooked. But then I went to watch the anime and it's QUALITY left and right. Also, it triggers my guitautism because half the shit they animated doesn't fit the sounds that are playing. The soundtrack is okay, but are there any stand-out tracks because the Engrish gets on my nerves a bit.
>>55568151 >>55568057 >>55568029 Ping Pong is just the generic basic bullshit competition plot of so many animes "oh he's so good at X he can't beat me" what's this shit about "beating people" anyway? is that something japanese people really say? anyway, it's just that sold on a somewhat unique visual style, it's bad
actually good anime: Mononoke Kemonozume Legend of the Galactic heroes Tatami Galaxy Bebop Eva Welcome to the NHK
only okay anime: Mushishi (probably the best one out of these) Paranoia Agent Haibane Renmei (only okay)
jury still out: Lain, need to rewatch, but I don't think it's good
>>55571776 the other series didnt seem related to me, I actually dropped it pretty early because it's not nearly as ambitious mononoke does have some pacing issues, but if you stick with it for the art style it does pay off
welcome to nhk is pretty interesting to me, I actually ended up reading the manga and apparently it gets watered down in every step from the light novel, so maybe the anime is not as good as I remember and I'm confusing the two
