I'm making an anti-normiecore chart.
>Criteria: Must be sincerely weird and actively trying to flabberghast the average music listener. Cannot be autist shit like Merzbow, who makes music for his own reasons.
So far I've got Ween, Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Daniel Johnston, Wild Man Fischer, and GG Allin. Any suggestions?
>Actively trying to flabbergast
Daniel thinks (and is correct) that he's making completely normal pop music, with the intention of making pop music.
The "weirdness" is the schizophrenia and lo-fi recording.
Wouldn't sincerely weird be the opposite of trying to flabbergast the listener, as in it's not something the artist attempts whatsoever, just something they do naturally?
>tfw you unironically enjoy Ween for their sonically creative pop songs and people on /mu/ accuse them of being only a "random" comedy act
Seriously guys have you ever noticed how incredibly catchy Pure Guava is? How can you like Ariel Pink and not like Ween?
Anti norm course should appropriate the outsider name.
I also feel like "indie" is a label that has lost all meaning and could be replaced by outsider
This thread was a horrible idea, and you are a terrible person for making it.

I get what you're saying, but their serious music like Quebec (and Birthday Boy along with some of White Pepper) is heartbreaking and genius, IMO. If you could save yourself, Zoloft, and I Don't Want it all made me cry. They are far from a novelty act.
I dont think ween are novelty comedy act, they are an act that doesnt take themselves too seriously all the time
But when they do get serious its great
Well, when they're comparing a band to a television show, I don't think that necessarily means they're claiming the band is exactly the show.
The Simpsons is the TV equivalent to the Rolling Stones but I'm not saying the Rolling Stones are an animated sitcom band.
The Mothers of Invention were pretty anti-normie. And they're a little different from pure Frank Zappa.
Pretty much every one of their albums. I'd probably say their last two being the most against the grain for the scene they were originally a part of
Stick Men With Ray Guns, The Nig-Heist, I think Eyehategod started out trying to be this, Drunks with Guns, and Butthole Surfers up to Independent Worm Saloon and still a bit after that...
Hapopy falling hard on the flabbergasting side of things
shitload of other No Wave bands as well Daisuck & Prostitute, Bachikaburi, Theoretical Girls, and DNA being a few that immediately come to mind
People who've only heard Tiptoe, Livin' in the Sunlight and his covers
not stuff like Daddy, Daddy, What Is Heaven Like? Stay Down There Where You Belong or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1se9xbRRZL8
