2 MB,
Guys... this is an 89 motobecane i resprayed. Im wondering about shifters. Since i already upped the wheels to shimano r500s im not really stuck on keeping it original. It came with a set of 2x6 braze ons but friction so could work with the 2x8 im upping it to. Or i got a set of damn near perfect rsx stis i could smack on there.

Ignore the fork. Im getting it threaded and cut tomorrow.

I guess my real question is what would you do?
Why use the RSX STIs of course
there's no braze on mounts, i mean you can use a problem solvers band or something, but it's not gonna be that clean, so STIs.

If it had braze on mounts, Tiagra 8 speed indexed downtube are very cheap on crc, so that would be the alternative imo. Also shimergo if you want to drop some cash.

Get some decals too solid white/ black is boring as fuck.

Having a good front light really helps, though make sure you point it to the ground, making sure you don't blind other people if it's something like an mtb light.

You'll be fine, have fun, post pic of bike at night with lights on

Melbourne Commuter Rail network
-Covers most of the suburbs
-Loop drops off and picks up people around the city centre
oh boy where to begin lel
-Since 1969 every single government has focused on building Freeways and letting rail rot. 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan laid out 10 Freeways, the last was finished in 2005. They're all congested. People are switching back to rail use. So the plan is to build more freeways.
-With the focus on road development and the lack of investment...

Melbourne Tram network
heavy coverage in the city centre and surround inner urban area. You can hop off the trains catch the trams to keep going, switch from one tram to another, etc
-Quite a few stops are often only 100 meters apart
-In older streets that have one lane on either side of the tram tracks the councils often allow curb side parking - meaning people park in that one lane, meaning all traffic is forced on the tram tracks meaning all traffic grinds to a halt!

I bought a single speed track bike with bullhorns, freewheel and a back brake for commuting.

Was this a good idea?
31 replies and 4 images submitted. Click here to view.
Should have gotten a front brake instead, but meh.
Not OP but why would a front brake be more benefitial than a rear if it's on a free wheel and not a fixed cog?
Lets see your so called bike anon.

Old one is on autosage. Would fancier wheels reduce the amount of windup flex from braking with disc brakes? More spokes? Different spokes? Different lacing? I switched a few months ago and I find the flexing a little bit disconcerting.

I believe that disc-brake (and possibly drum brake?) front wheels are supposed to be cross-laced and never radially-laced. Hopefully somebody else can explain this further.

I'm curious: can a bike with an internal-gear hub be equipped with double or triple front chainrings via use of a chain tensioner?

(pic unrelated)

Yes it can

Also that's a nice paintjob
I'm just getting into riding again. Commuting to work the other day was so much fun I decided I'm gonna start going on longer rides as long as it doesn't interfere with my weight training.

Anyway, i don't think there's a c25k style program for cycling. There's really not a need. There's no limiting factor when it comes to riding continuously like there is running. Buuuut. How do you get better as a complete beginner?

For todays ride, I took it easy. I made sure I was capable of singing (Don't you want me, baby? *gasp gasp...

Normally no, but it's bug season and I've already had a couple of ones inside my eye when going downhill, so I'll probably get some clear safety glasses or something
In the summer, sure

It's dark now and my morning ride and evening ride are both unaffected by Mr. Sun

So I just wear clear safety goggles

But it does have front suspension! lol

Cannondale catalogs are readily available online, I'm not going to go hunting for your specific model but you can likely find it in years 1992-1995. Market value is minimal, look what the cheapest working bike goes for in your market and that's what I'd expect it to sell for - it's not a desireable bike nor are there any nice parts worth transplanting to a better frame.
Not sure what it is, but it's collectible

Roadies, report in. Where do you ride. What sort of distance is your average ride. What average speed do you ride. What do you ride?

I'm riding between 40 and 50 miles on a sunday morning, tackling some decent hills (cat 4 according to strava) and riding at 15mph. pic related.

Depends on what I'm doing if it's a commute then it's like 4-5 miles with some hills 17-25 on flats 10-16 on hills but if I'm doing a long ride then it's more like 18mph (the trail near me is almost perfectly flat for like40 miles one way.

>drunk right now so take this with a grain of salt but I'm double checking and evrything looks right
Same guy, I ride a Schwinn continental with shamjno brakes and treko ergo brakes but the rest is stock
Where = different places, prefer mountains. I have some nice HC climbs around my area which are fun.
Speed = Average for the whole ride is generally around 30-35 depending on how much of it is spent climbing.
What = Aluminum frame, but upgraded to ultegra, really light wheelset, etc.

Rides are generally around 100-120km and now that I have classes I can only realistically get out twice a week. During summer usually 3 or 4 times a week.

Where did anyone imply otherwise? Are you implying people think planes are automobiles? The only /n/ thing that is questionable is busses.
