My Moser came with the same hideous stem. There was some mandate about putting that ugly profile stem on nice italian bikes in the 90s.
If you aren't suiting up and time trialing it around on long flats, you should consider getting a threadless headset converter and some bmx risers.
A homemade disc cover for your rear wheel would seal the deal.

I totally disagree about swapping the levers. If it's about aesthetics, Merckx era routing looks great on your bike, and those colors look great too.
Swapping old levers is worth it to get more comfortable hoods, but those ones look great condition so i daresay they are relatively comfortable.

If you want to perfect its looks, get a silver seatpost. Campagnolo aero posts are the sexiest out there. If you find a cheap dull one you can bring it up. I can't really talk though because I have a black post on my bike full of shiny silver parts...

Yeah, this stem blows. I'm not quite ready to push 53x11 so I think the next thing for this bike is a smaller chainring. I've seen a bunch of ways to make homemade discs but none of them look that good. Maybe I'll try something. Also, post dat F.Moser! :D

The rubino's werent that bad (allot better than the conti ultra sport which I know are budget tires).The schwalbes are just better and are not too hard to mount too.

allows you to use a really small spaced cassette. My winter training bike runs a tripple with a 12-23 9 speed
The jump between gears is just too huge which is why I'm running a standart on my race bike. With a 11 sp groupset you can afford to go 11-27 or something like that without sacrificing that smooth transition between gears that a narrow spaced cassette offers.

I'm working on an upgrade to my ride that'll be a 1x10 with a 39t chainring already on it and an 11-32 cassette. Figured it'd give me enough range for most stuff around where I live, and really dug yours when you had it set up as such.

Right now a half Sora and half Tiagra groupset, Cannondale stem, Shimano WH-R500 wheels with Michelin Litions, look keo plus pedals and some other things.
I'm looking for better parts but they're expensive as heel, a new 105 groupset goes for around 1,5k, and my wage around 750 bucks (twice the minimum here)

2013 Giant Defy 5... My DD for summer/fall. I've done two trouble centuries on it and wasn't uncomfortable... Rides real well and doesn't feel 'dead' like some of the carbon I've had. It's pretty damn light too (for what it is), frame size Medium (about a 54.5cm), only 25 lbs with rack, fenders, lights, frame pump, and saddlebag+flat kit. After this pic, I swapped to Vittoria Open Pavé tires... Holy shit are they nice. I've got another set of wheels built up, 105 hubs laced to HPlusSons TB14 rims, just gonna wait for the roads to clear to put those on.
The next upgrade is brakes... I want a set of stiff calipers that don't cost $100/each... Suggestions?
So I shuffled some parts around, because I finally had everything in place to try something I've been curious about since seeing it on /n/ a few years ago...
And it works!
I need to spend more hours riding this bike before deciding whether I really this setup any better than barcons, and I still think that STI levers (unflared models) work better in a sideways orientation than Ergo levers, but reaching the thumb lever under the bar is much easier than it seems like it ought to be.
If you haven't tried this already, I'd upgrade your brake pads before you swap out the calipers.

Don't listen to that post. The way to hurt your back on a bike is ride a bike with too much saddle to drop ratio or too long of a top tube. Neither of these will happen if you get a frame that fits you and do a bit of stretching.
Batavus Criterium. I bought this one from some guy for 200 euro's who bought it back in the 80's, he only used it a few times. All original, except the tires. Superb condition. I only use it in fair-weather.

Super dooper fun mate. It's a Shogun Kaze, Nishiki sold a model with the same geo as well. It's fit to me perfectly (58cm effective TT) at 6'1". It basically just feels like a properly fit road bike does in the drops. The bars actually overlap the front axle vertically at the farthest point, would take a bit of getting used to for most riders.
They don't fuck your back up, I trust whoever said that doesn't actually own one. I've ridden 5+ half/more centuries on it. Hell I even take it out on mountain bike trails - but I'm a trials rider so I've got more bike handling than most, albeit I'm slow hah..
As for price and finding them, it's just a lot of looking. Craigslist, Pedalroom, EBay...
I've bought a few other (now sold) pursuit bikes off of Craigslist in Southern CA, the cheap old steel heaven it is. Sometimes there will be none, other times I'll see five or so for sale.. just wait it out. I bought this one with a HED carbon wheelset and sold that to pay off the bike. It's not the most unique pursuit bike I've owned, but it rides so well and comfortably that I couldn't in good conscience sell it and expect to find such another good fit.
Ah the saddle angle... I don't ride in chamois and it really just works well with the geo. It's a bit further rocked back than it looks in the picture, but I don't blame you for the criticism, on any other bike I'd be right with you.
I've ridden this and other pursuit bikes daily for quite some time, if anybody has any questions about riding or finding them feel free and I'll do my best.

What are you even talking about. That's completely normal.
It's not entirely unusual, but it's to a much greater extent than normal road bikes. The combination of extra weight on the front wheel and a smaller wheel with a smaller contact patch create somewhat of a tiller effect. It's not unstable but it is different than a normal bike at first.
Got this one for £150, in pretty bad shape. Got a pair of used wheels and pedals for £45 on gumtree, new brake pads and cables. Getting new cassette and chain also.
Just feels good to fix up old beaten bike.

That cranks are especially lovely. I had some of those mavic wheels until i ruined them, fucking excellent wheels. Don't put 28s on them and ride trails...
If you ever want to waste a bit of money you could get a new regal. I have a regal, a rolls & a turbo and the regal is my favorite, great saddle.
I'd prefer it with black saddle, tape & tyres (maybe something with a gum strip like challenge crit open tubular), but that's just me being boring.

You could try to bring your seatpost & stem up a bit if you can be bothered. Look up aluminium polishing on bike forums.

The san marcos is absolutely comfortable and at the moment I would hate to see it go, despite its obvious aging.

Orfos Flares. They're 180 degree visible to other vehicles using a type of diffusion similar to that of a car reflector.
The front one doesn't actually shine upwards at all fortunately from the way it's made. I haven't had it in my eyes at all and sometimes forget it's even there as I use another light on my handlebars to see.

Before 60 mile ride. Only thing I hate is that I need foot cages.
I don't believe in bottom of drops must be parallel to the ground, but maybe angle them down some and raise your stem to compensate. It would make the drops more comfortable, keep the hoods much the same, and give you tops that are higher to rest your back with.
It is comfy. I'm, 6'4" and it's hella comfy. I threw these thick tires on there to help deal with winter and now I think I might keep them on since they're pretty comfy to commute on. Or maybe I'll get a wide set of slicks.

Bought my first road bike today, trek 5500, all dura ace components. Got it for 450. Super excited, perfect fit, everything is in surprisingly good shape considering it's age.
It could be more comfortable to have your saddle a bit tilted back or forward, but not to the point yours is. You may start developing wrist pain, because you're putting more weight in your hands by having your saddle slide you forward.

A riser stem is a stem with rise. In the position pictured, it's a riser stem.

He was obviously a slow rider on a fast bike. The expense isn't the issue - If he had a custom titanium frame or something that wouldn't be freddish, but buying a race bike and just bimbling around on it with a setup like that is freddish.

Ergos should usually be level with the ground (the flat part of the ergo), or tilted up a bit. Yours seem a bit too high but I've seen a bunch of people use them that high too, so whatever you find comfier.

The fuck is the deal with that fork? It looks like it's actually designed to have a flipped brake mount (going by the rake) for no reason. Disc brake mounts are designed to force the caliper into the mount, not to try and pull it away from the fork.
Holy shit... just went for a ride on the new trek. Wow. That thing is smooth and fast. Coming from a mountain biking background, i wasn't sure if i'd be sold on road biking. But damn, i get it and i'm into it hook line and sinker. I mean i hit 37 mph on my ride today which i don't even know if that's actually fast but that was so unheard of on my MTB. Man what a rush... So much fun!
I think my brakes need adjusting though.. my back ones felt like they were doing basically nothing.

Fuck yea, road biking is a rush man. Glad you enjoy it. That is very fast if it was on the flat. You should be able to get up to 50mph on a steep hill in a tuck.
Definitely get the front brake working well. New pad inserts might help.
The back brake basically doesn't matter and don't use it.
You should slowly make your front end more aggressive. You can stay comfortable in an aero position only if you generate enough power. Being fast basically supports you. Not having a sore back for longer rides is much more important than being aero though.
Also, the drops are the most stable position and best to brake from so take descents in the drops. MTB people often don't realise this and stay on the hoods.

Assuming that setup could even produce enough force to pull the wheel from the dropouts (highly doubtful) there are other solutions to that problem, such as angled dropouts (as mentioned in that article), lawyer lips, and even retention washers (which that fork looks like it may have actually been designed for with those holes above the dropouts).
I built this today with FSA alpha cranks and bb, with SRAM x7 9 speed stuff. Next i'll get some Kenda BGG's 2x2.4 Can anyone recommend some good cantilever brakes?
not bad. kinda meh, but not bad by any measure. more than just economical, it seems a lot better suited for a student. thule makes a pretty nice easy-on easy-off rack you could get for commuting, and take off to go on longer rides.

I like my bike, I just bought a bike tool kit so I can better maintain it. Got a maintance book too. Pretty excited. I really just got into cycling last year other than my youth riding on walmart fixies.
Yeah I know that the saddle bag is pretty xbox hueg but I like being prepared, got two tubes a backup battery for my light because I ride at night only and a backup usb charger to charge my phone just in-case. oh and a multi-tool
...you really don't need two spare tubes. stick one in and replace the other with a tire boot kit and tube patch kit. really you can repair most tube and tire flats on the road but i wouldn't want to be stuck at night somewhere with an unrepairable tube and no spare. also imo medical supplies are more important than a second spare, as well. throw in some alcohol wipes, gauze pads, and medical tape. it really sucks riding home with exposed torn up skin stinging the entire way. takes up no space, really. i'd also really recommend a small led maglite in case you have to pull over to work on anything. bike lights won't do you much good cause you won't really have anyplace to mount it usefully whereas you can stick a small maglite between your chompers and aim it wherever you're looking :-)

Yeah going to do that now since I did fall down and gouge my leg on the large gear and it bleed pretty bad and is still sorta bleeding. I do also have a patch kit but the light and the medical supplies are a good idea, but my main bike light is easily detached from the handlebars so I can point it at the tires pretty easy if I have to fix a flat

you really need both hands to do most anything when it comes to working on a bike. i've been in that situation and when i realized i couldn't hold my bike light in my mouth i was totally cursing myself for not realizing that would be a problem

If it was me I'd just buy different bars and flip the stem but I'd only recommend you switching up those bars. Different shaped bars would be more comfortable especially for the drop position and you don't have to keep hunting for a compromise angle.

Took her out for a spin today.
Went to lbs to get new 105 chain, and 105 ten speed cassette. They installed it, but it was not shifting correctly? Kept skipping. I took a look at it, wasn't shifting correctly, at all, but they put a Tiagra cassette on it, refunded me $25 and it works fine now.
Anybody know why it might not work?
