Top Clinton aides plotted to use their candidate’s “server moment”—the delivery of her private server and thumb drives of emails to the FBI—to show that the former secretary of state was taking a “big step” to deal with the “email problem,” an exchange hacked from the inbox of Clinton campaign chair John Podesta on Tuesday shows.
Clinton and her lawyer, David Kendall, turned over the server and thumb drives containing copies of her work-related communications to FBI investigators in August 2015.
In an Aug. 8, 2015, email exchange, Podesta, Kendall,... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Clinton was interviewed by Salinas for Univision four days later. She was briefly questioned on the issue of her private email during the interview.
Messages contained in a trove of Podesta’s emails made public by WikiLeaks in recent days show how Clinton campaign staffers sought to craft and control the former secretary of state’s message on the issue. The directors of national intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security have accused “Russia’s senior-most officials” of hacking and leaking emails posted to Wikileaks and other sites to influence and... Clinton said that she chose to use personal email at the State Department because of the convenience of carrying only one device. Investigative materials made public by the FBI earlier this year identified 13 different mobile devices associated with Clinton’s phone numbers that could have been used to access emails on her personal system.
The email issue has continued to dog Clinton’s presidential campaign. The newly leaked emails also show that it raised questions among Clinton insiders.
For example, Neera Tanden, a longtime Clinton ally and head of the left-leaning... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

>Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general, said Mr. Ferrer had been arrested Thursday on a California warrant after he arrived in Houston on a flight from Amsterdam, The Associated Press reported. The three-year investigation has been a joint effort of the States of Texas and California.
>Mr. Ferrer will face an extradition hearing in Texas that could return him to California to face charges. Arrest warrants have been filed against Mr. Lacey and Mr. Larkin, but officials said Thursday night that neither were in custody.

>Documents filed in the case included interviews with children who said they took out ads on Backpage.com after they were forced into prostitution.
>A 15-year-old girl identified as E.S., who said she was a forced into prostitution when she was 13, said Backpage “profits off of women and men,” whether they want to earn money through prostitution or are forced into it.
>“I mean really, coming from someone my age, there is too much access, like it’s too easy for people get on it and post an ad,” she said in court papers.
>A congressional investigation this year found that the website changed some of its adult classifieds to conceal the fact that the advertisements were for sex acts with minors. Mr. Ferrer was subpoenaed by a Senate subcommittee last fall to answer questions about reported child sex-trafficking ads, but he did not show up.
>Ms. Robles-Román said a successful prosecution could help drive such advertisements off the internet. “Backpage.com is an online brothel that provides underage kids to pedophiles,” she said.
>The company’s internal reports showed that from January 2013 to March 2015, 99 percent of its income was “directly attributable” to its adult advertising, Kamala D. Harris, the California attorney general, said in a news release. She said more than $51 million of its revenue came from California in that period.
>Court records said Mr. Lacey and Mr. Larkin each received a $10 million bonus in September 2014. The United States Supreme Court refused a request by Backpage to block a Senate subpoena seeking information on how it screens ads for possible sex trafficking.

Excerpts of Hillary Clinton’s previously secret speeches to big banks and trade groups in 2013 and 2014 show her exalting the work of her hosts, hardly a surprise when these groups paid her up to $225,000 an hour to chat them up.
Far from chiding Goldman Sachs for obstructing Democratic proposals for financial reform, Clinton appeared to sympathize with the giant investment bank. In a November 2013 speech to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), Clinton pronounced herself proud to work with the trade group as a U.S. senator to “look for ways to help families facing foreclosure with concrete steps.”

An April 2007 document lists NAR’s priorities in foreclosure mitigation, and they were able to get an amendment exempting mortgage debt forgiveness from being treated as earned income. Her former Democratic presidential rival, Bernie Sanders responded in a statement, “Whatever Secretary Clinton may or may not have said behind closed doors on Wall Street, I am determined to implement the agenda of the Democratic Party platform which was agreed upon by her campaign,” and which “calls for breaking up the largest financial institutions in this country, re-establishing Glass-Steagall and prosecuting those many Wall Street CEOs who engaged in illegal behavior.”
The excerpts reveal that Clinton, when speaking to the financial industry, adopted their mindset and privileged their arguments. The question that arises is whether members of a possible Clinton administration will reflect this worldview, or whether the long primary with Sanders has made that untenable. Some aggressive advocates for progressive appointments believe the latter.
“At State and on the speaking circuit, Clinton was in an environment that encouraged her to view Wall Street bankers as fonts of economic wisdom,” said Jeff Hauser, Director of the Revolving Door Project. “But after 15 months running against a progressive populist like Sanders, Clinton knows that government conducted a by rotating stream of bankers is politically unacceptable.”

Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a new process for treating metal surfaces that has the potential to improve efficiency in piston engines and a range of other equipment.
The method improves the ability of metal surfaces to bond with oil, significantly reducing friction without special oil additives.
"About 50 percent of the mechanical energy losses in an internal combustion engine result from piston assembly friction. So if we can reduce the friction, we can save energy and reduce fuel and oil consumption," said Michael Varenberg,... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
"The reported result surpasses the performance of the best current commercial oils and is similar to the performance of lubricants formulated with tungsten disulfide-based nanoparticles, but critically, our process does not use any expensive nanostructured media," Varenberg said.
The method for reducing surface friction is flexible and similar results can be achieved using a variety of processes other than shot peening, such as lapping, honing, burnishing, laser shock peening, the researchers suggest. That would make the process even easier to adapt to a range... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

A Viking-era rune stone that went missing for almost two centuries has been found after a Swedish archaeologist stumbled on it almost by chance.
