3 MB,
FLIP THREAD!!

Ok /o/. I want to see the cars you've flipped. (As in bought and sold for profit). Post what it is, how much you got it for (story helps too) and how much you sold it for. I'll start.

Picked up this 06 mega cab 3500 6 speed manual dually from a local shop my buddy worked at as a service writer. Engine had a loud knock, they didn't even look at it and quoted him $10,000.00 for an engine. He said fuck it make me an offer on the truck. I put in a $2000 bid plus the shop Bill and he bit. Paid $2400 for a truck that books for $24k.

Hey /o/, need some advice or input.
My torque converter is shuddering. I checked the fluid and while its not burnt or black, is it pretty dark for fluid with 8000 miles on it. Tomorrow I am going to replace it, three times. I don't have a flushing machine, but i figure three times should do it. If that doesn't fix it, is there any additives that work or you would recommend? I used a bottle of transx and while it did make a massive improvement in general shifting, the torque converter still shudders and jerks. Do they make anything specifically for the torque converter?

Uh transmission fluid is supposed to be good for 100k miles. A transmission can take around 18 quarts so it'd be expensive you "flush" it 3 times
>>
>>15864751

transmission lifespan depends on what the vehicle is used for. i was a mechanic for many years, one of my Toyota cars that i bag on and shift past 7000rpm i usually drain the trans pan yearly and refill it. if you have a truck that tows alot and such, it needs to be changed alot sooner than grandmas Cadillac that doesnt go past 2000rpm

theres nothing really specially made for the torque converter, if you want to try changing the fluid,...

It is the most expensive one. Cheapest of those I have found is 58,000 while the other ones are all floating in the 40's. I just thought I would try one out to see what a Japanese "performance car" would drive like. In all honesty I like it the least from a looks perspective.

How did you get over DIY anxiety? I want to work on my cars but I'm afraid I'll break something. Have only changed my own oil recently but am thinking about changing my break pads and rotors, any tips to stop being a pussy?
43 replies and 10 images submitted. Click here to view.

Start small and work your way up. Fluid changes are a good place to start. Then maybe serpentine belt replacements and brake pad changes. Google and YouTube are your friend.

Basically just suck it up and start.

Oh, and if you're doing something like brakes, do one side of an axle at a time so you have a reference if you don't remember how to,get it all back together.
>>
>>15864562
a service manual can really help, as that will show you every step you need to take. however, it will also "show" you that every single bolt and nut on the vehicle requires a specific torque value. if you're not a weakling nor a gorilla, you can torque 90% of the bolts on your car w/o a torque wrench just fine.

brakes are a great thing for a beginner to diy. the hardest part is usually pushing a gunked up brake piston back into the caliper if you don't have a clamp or big-ass channel locks....

Alot of places will offer loans based on no but they'll probably be at terrible rates.

All you can do is just shop around see what they offer, but don't sign any paperwork other than for them to run your credit.

Also do your research, see what are good rates, and if you can't swing an auto loan in the mean time you could go to a credit union and apply for a small (less than $1000) loan and pay it back within 6months, or way shorter than the loan term is.

How did you get your job as a mechanic?
Did you go to college or did you have previous experience?
What are some of the pros of being a mechanic? Cons?

I am thinking about being a mechanic but I have little experience when it comes to cars/trucks. I know stuff like changing tires/spark plugs/oil/brake pads and things like that, and I learned it with relative ease. When I was a teen I loved watching my dad work on his truck and I am quite interested in choosing it as a career now.

id say in this day and age it'd be hard to get hired without having some sort of trade school diploma.

best bet would be sign up for a 2 year course or whatever, and at the same time go to the local garage, explain that youre doing the course, and ask to volunteer in the weekends or whatever. that way, by the time you get out, you have the piece of paper in your hand, a bit of experience, and if not a job lined up through volunteering, at least a reference inside the industry
>>
>>15863286
Don't waste the money on college. It's stupid expensive (except maybe Jr. College courses). Just go to small shops and ask to be a shop boy. Be prepared to sweep, clean up, do oil changes etc for a while. Then after you learn more and more you will start to become a real mechanic. Usually within a few years.
Pros
>always a job somewhere
>great life skill
>decent pay after a while
>you can specialize in cool shit like race cars, tuning, turbos, etc

Cons
>it gets HOT as fuck in the summer (depending on where you live)
>cold as fuck in the winter (depending on where you live)
>you will spend tens of thousands of dollars on overpriced tools and boxes
>pay is okay for a young person but tops out pretty fast
>its HARD work
>you will be dirty every day
>you will never enjoy working on your own car (after a while)
>you will spend all day right next to coworkers in small areas

At my shop they guys always become friends and even when they move to different shops they keep in touch. Also, the resources from being friends with mechanics from different shops is great. I needed an arc welder the other day, called a buddy on saturday and he met me at his shop at midnight to weld some shit. Our dyno is open after hours to friends etc.

Overall, it's an OKAY job. You won't become rich (unless you open your own shop and for sure not then), but you can make a comfortable living. But it's not easy work.
>>
Start applying for heavy diesel apprenticeships. It's the only mechanical trade that makes money worth writing home about.

Or if you're over 24, laugh at the plebs and just go Direct Access once you're bored of 125cc.

526 KB,
Next year I'll ve living in Virginia for three months.

I am an eurofag, would love to experience some of the american car culture. What do?

I have full car and bike license and I think they are at least temporarily valid in the USA. So up to everything.

What do?

Ideas until now:

- buy foxbody v8 mustang/crown victoria dirt cheap, sell when leaving, feel the v8.
- same with american motorbike.
- just rent a 74 cadillac and be happy.

Idk /o/, give me some burger advice.

>acquire v8 challenger
>rev at every stop light
>everyone will want to drag race you
>haul ass and win every time

That's all there is to it. Have fun.

Sounds good but I'll be losing thousands of dollars in the buy/sell process, just for three months.

How are burgerland insurance rates?

you wont be feeling much V8 since those are anemic and terrible
same with any American bike
the Cadillac will be a huge letdown

the best part of american car culture revolves around imports

wtf am I looking at, Timing chain driven cam that drives the other cam via spur gears?

I've seen Toyota set ups like this, timing BELT driving one cam that drives the other via gearing. Non-interference in relation to piston and valves. Valves will contact, that's why they're geared together, neat.
