I am hoping someone can help me with a question. I am wanting to join my local ESAR (Explorer Search and Rescue) program, but i have a few black marks on my record. I know they do a background check through the department of emergency management, what i was told anyway by the local organization leader anyway. The way it was described to me in my orientation was "if you have ever been in the back of a cop car, for anything other than a ride along, you wont get in". That seems a bit outrageous to me, but how much truth is there too it? I really want... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Would you hike with a robotic companion? It could carry your pack and be outfitted with sensors that allow it to detect dangerous animals long before you do. How about a drone that would silently watch over you from above so you still get the solitude of hiking alone but still have the safety of a robotic guardian watching over you? Obviously anything noisy like a quadcopter would be out maybe something that silently flies like a bird could be developed.
What shelters do you guys recommend for winter camping? This winter I wanted to try building a fortified A frame and then insulating it with a foot of snow. Any experiences/recommendations? Will be testing anything in back yard before I bring it /out/.
Answer this truly, could you have lasted more days than this man? In the same location, same state, with the same supplies, could you have lived indefinitely off the land? What would you have done differently than he? Would you have stopped at the bus too? Would you have kept going?
The question is akin to asking someone with no-to-limited flight experience if they could have done a better job landing a plane than some aviation fuck up. I probably couldn't do much worse than Mccandless, but I probably wouldn't do very well either. That's because I haven't done anything to learn survival techniques in Alaska because it's a situation I'm not going to put myself in.
To answer you're question, I would have stopped well before finding the bus. In fact, I'd have stopped before double majoring in the liberal arts.
Poor dumb bastard looks like a god damned skeleton in that picture.
I would have done better IF I decided to do that. But I won't decide to do it. And the only reason I would do better is because I would save up money and make extensive preparations for such a journey.
Was at Kohls today (dept store in USA for those down under, across the pond, or south of the border). Found a packable down jacket, Heat Keep brand, for $50.
650 goose down fill, very light, and packs to about the size of a grapefruit or less.
It's not an amazing jacket as far as jackets go, but I've never seen a packable real goose down jacket for less than $150. Picked one up, will go in my pack, take up very little space or weight, and should work well.

Looking to find reliable tools that work well and LAST. As far as I can tell mora is overhyped mediocrity. I want to know what /out/ thinks is objectively the best knife around, along with saw and Hatchet (though those are somewhat secondary).
>As far as I can tell mora is overhyped mediocrity For Americans, yes. Yuros love it because shitty plastic knives are all their governments let them have. Get a custom made knife if you've got the money. Don't baton your knife that's retarded. gransfors bruks axes are top tier. I don't know anything about portable saws, I'd assume whatever the most popular namebrand one is is pretty decent.
