Just found that the plane tickets to japan are not that expensive (i thought it would be around $3000, but its about $1500)

Anything i should know about travelling there as a photographer? Are there cheap lodging areas? Do people respond to english or do they stick to japanese no matter what?

You know there are boards on 4chan better suited to this question than /p/, right?

either way, don't travel to japan. it's a total waste of time. go to florence, see some real art, eat the best food in the world, learn to hate italians.

Check out the Japan General over at /trv/, you'll probably get better answers there

Candle lady small.jpg
265 KB,
I'd consider myself an amateur photographer in all respects. I take photos for fun and primarily for myself with the occasional fb post but I see lots of flaws with my photos (not that some of them aren't good) I just see improper focus, substandard composition etc. and just want to improve more than I want to share my photos like my friends tell me I should do. But I thought i'd ask for your thoughts. They are generally well received by my friends (which is really nice) but they don't quite have the same level of knowledge as people on here might.

So please, judge my photos. Don't go easy. I need it. Any comment at all is much appreciated

72 KB,
Recently after getting more into color grading I have had great trouble watching more recent indie films, films that have budgets of 40k-60k are all ending up very visually similar and have no real spirit. The movie Blue Ruin is a perfect example of this massive use of color grading that looks on par with a snapchat filter.
9 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>2953009
By no means is it color gradings fault, even in the past film makers would vary in film stocks for different color balances in feature films.
The problem is that these indie film makers are skimping on proper DI work and are tasking people who aren't professionals or competent to do color grading.
The bigger fault imo would be laziness or a recent trend of poor post production in low budget filming. Even basic editing and cuts look like shit in most indie films

Sounds like you want a camcorder.

I had an S100, outside of the "danger zone" serial number range for lens failures, and it still crapped out after about a year. Canon claims it was only a problem with a small number of cameras but it's bullshit and seems to happen frequently with all the S cameras.

Other than purchasing a tool that calibrates color and gamma. What's the best way to calibrate color/gamma?

If anyone here does so that is.
6 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
The only way to do it accurately is with a tool.

Otherwise, you can print a color sheet on your high end calibrated printer (also requires a tool) on high end paper and ink, and match your monitor to it.

If you're only hanging prints in your house, you can match your monitor to a color sheet printed from an uncalibrated printer. This will provide the worst results and not help with other people viewing digital files online.

tldr buy a calibration thing
>>
>>2953889
Just go find someone that has a monitor calibration tool and use it for a day. Don't do it by eye
>>
>>2953891
You can calibrate brightness and contrast (which are the most important settings) perfectly fine with just a software help.

But for color, yeah you need something that can analyze the screen.

Sony now have 25% of the full frame market in europe, 95% of which is mirrorless models. They only released the a7 3 years ago, with no lens ecosystem, whereas canikon have had FF bodies for 15 years, and a massive established userbase of their lenses. How did this happen?

This is from the album of a street photographer. Obviously he did not have any strobes etc. My photos always turn out plain but this looks amazing. Any tips?

Does it bother you when your friends pose in what's supposed to be a natural photo? I kinda like it, it's sort of like odd one out.

422 KB,
I got a GR IV a few years back and after some searches took a few custom settings from sites and haven't really gone back to tweak them since.

Any other users want to exchange their settings? I haven't seen a whole lot get posted online in recent years so just curious to see how other users have their custom modes set up.

This is a good BW setting I took from bigheadtaco:

01.Name: MY1
02.Switch Shooting Mode: Manual
03.Aperture: F/4.0
04.Shutter Speed: 1/640th sec
05.Picture Quality/Size: 9mp 3:2 F
06.White Balance: Manual
07.White Balance Compensation: A:0, G: 0
08.ISO Setting: ISO 400
09.Image Setting: Black & White (customize sharpness and contrast specific to this mode)
10.Macro Mode: Off (if ON, remember you can choose the exact distance for macro)
11.Focus:MF
12.Manual Focus Distance: 2 M
13.Snap Focus Distance: Auto (access the external focus sensors when Full Press Snap is ON)
14.Full Press Snap: On (instead of 1/2 press, press shutter all the way down to access 2nd function)
15.Pre-AF: Off (turn off external focus sensors, use only sensor based autofocus)
16.Exposure Metering: Multi
17.Self-timer: Off
18.Custom Self-Timer: 2Pics, 5Sec.
19.Continuous Mode: Continuous
20.Auto Bracket: Off
21.Dynamic Range Compensation: AUTO
22.Flash Mode:Manual Flash
23.Flash Exposure Compensation: 0.0
24.Manual Flash Amount: 1/16
25.Flash Synchro Settings: 2nd Curtain
26.Noise Reduction: Weak
27.Noise Reduction ISO: Over ISO 801
28.Date Imprint: Off

Dont listen to him Ricohs are adored on this site. I use the GR1V GR21 and the GR/GRII. Im off to Japan tonight to snap shit off a few rolls for two weeks. I love using them fantastic cameras.

This is autistic as fuck.

Why are GR users so scummy? Just take a fucking picture m8, set your aperture, shutter speed and ISO and go. Need a flash? Turn on the flash.

You don't need a custom fucking program to do it.
