no. /p/ is a very small pool these days.

Just started using Lightroom and wondered if anyone could offer some tips / wisdom on how to make the most of it.
I've been trying to make a preset that can achieve the look in pic related but I don't really know where to begin.

Can anyone give me a hand?
Thanks in advance

anything below 25mm is pure shit. too much distortion.

it is nice not having to worry about focusing as much though.

unless your on a aspc. then 18 is p.good.
>>
>>2915477
You think anything would look pure shit?
Im not sure on my favourite focal length.
I dunno what to go for on my A7R. Voigtlander 15mm looks appealing.

Who here Sigma 10-20mm? I just got it a few days ago but fell ill at the same time and haven't had a chance to go and use it, despite itching to do so.

Anyone have any experience using it?

These aren't supposed to compose a concise body of work or anything. They are just my favorite shots from 8 rolls I got back over the weekend. Criticism would be awesome. All shot on a Bronica SQ-A.

I'll start with the Provia shots.

I am a co-founder of a motorsports apparel company and we are trying to improve our content. It is just the two of us in the company right now so we don't have the money to hire a professional or models.

How should I go about taking lifestyle pics of our products? I have a little /p/hoto experience and an A6000 with the 18-50 kit and a 55-200 sony zoom.

Any help is appreciated.

You have three options:
1. A chair to kick.
2. A noose.
3. A running car in a garage.
>>
>>2922320
This stuff doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would ever really be good in a lifestyle shot.
I mean, personally, I'd expect to see these very cheap in a Kmart kids area but maybe that's just my part of the world.
In which case, sell them to Kmart and let them put a kid in it for their catalogue.
Otherwise, I guess you could take photos of people wearing them while they're sitting down having a drink watching a race.
I really can't picture how you'd do this with people...

Find someone to model the clothing, friend, family friend, whatever, buy a 30mm/35mm f/1.8 for the A6000, find a nice background that's relevant to whatever you're selling, shoot portrait shots.

Clothing shot on it's own won't stand out enough, it needs to be on an actual person.

Also the 16-50 is complete shit and soft as anything unless stopped down to f/8 or so, which is kinda useless for anything other than landscape.

If the camera automatically meters for the flash, shoot at f5.6-f8 in aperture priority and call it good.

You're going to have to invest quite a bit into a decent rig after housings and strobes. Unless your volume is huge you're not likely to recoup that investment anytime soon. It also doesn't help that waterproof compacts are cheap enough now that many tourists will bring a couple on their dives and take their own photos.
>>

ALL gear is provided except my own divegear, dives are during sunny daytime in shallow water (noob divers, tropics so sunny 350 days / year)

many of these divers are < 10 dives so don't own gopros / if they do are probably more concerned with remembering to fuckin breathe

Lens suggestions for street photography? Preferably under $200
25 replies and 3 images submitted. Click here to view.

Just use your fucking kit lens. Learn how to google shit. Fuck.
>>
>>2921840
I want suggestions from people who have first hand accounts of their lenses and can give me insight on which ones they prefer. I've owned the fucking kit lenses for over a year now and I'm tired of their shitty oversensitive focus rings and want a fixed lens better than a fucking 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. Google just throws out random articles and I don't want to spend hours looking at 20 different articles saying 20 different lenses are the "best lens" for street photography. If you don't...
Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>
>>2921870
If you can't figure it out yourself, then you need to keep using your kit more. Keep it locked at various focal lengths for extended periods of time and see which you prefer. Typical street photography focal lengths range from 24mm-50mm, wide to standard range.

Monitors are a pretty important piece of gear for editing and since I'm looking to buy a new one, let's see what everyone uses.

I'm currently using a 18.4" 1080p MSI laptop. I assumed the brand would mean a great monitor and while it's fine for games, the blacks are just putrid.

I'm looking at a 27" 1440p or 4k monitor now.

In your opinion, is size, resolution or colour most important for efficient editing?

You won't get many replies here. Most of the 'prosumer' photogs here use macbooks because the hobby lends itself to the emulation of luddites. They know nothing about monitors

Yeah was curious about what level of interaction I'd get. I have seen a good amount of people telling others to have their colours calibrated and tested so I thought there might be a few responses to this.

Do you know that you can take photography classes on coursera.org?

This is the first one in their specialization: https://www.coursera.org/learn/exposure-photography

Is anybody else taking these? I just finished with the first one and I honestly don't know what should I think. Pictures shown and discussed in the class (main topics are vantage point and framing) are very mediocre to my untrained eye.

What really sucks though is that you can't participate in exercises if you don't pay for the course and you only audit it.

At first I thought...

Morning here in Houston,

How ya'll guise doing?
Listen, my wife just graduated and I'd like to save up to buy her an excellent camera we could use for the next decade or so. But with the job and time-frame I have, I can't afford anything over $500ish. So I've found a few cameras, but I need your opinions and suggestions. I've seen a lot of compact "mirrorless" cameras, those any good, or just a fad? Basically, what can take a solid landscape photo, nail that action shot of the jumping dog, and capture candid low-light shots?

Even this camera (for example) which is like about 6000$ will be outdated in what, 5 years ?

Let me give you an example. The nokia 3310 is a 16 years old phone. And there is the (shitty) iPhone 7 incoming, you don't even realise what has changed during those years.

What do you guys think of this music video I shot and edited for my friend? The stabilizer on Sony Vegas wasn't working so it is a little shaky. It was my first time doing animation, I was inspired by Denzel Curry's videos. Any feedback would be appreciated because I plan on doing more. I wasn't very serious when making this video but I plan on doing a lot more work for the next.

Get a decent steadycam, will improve footage a lot. Learn about colour grading and film with a decent camera. Editing was mostly shit.

But apart from that it was better than quite a lot of shitty rap videos out there.

How would I know if you'd have fun while shooting a birthday party?

If you want to know if you will do it to a good standard as you are equipped now, the answer is no.

Hey, /p/

I need some advice.
I recently had a company reach out to me if I could be a stringer this season to cover some football games. I figured that I shouldn't turn down the opportunity for photography related work especially if there's compensation involved.

The thing is though, is that I've never shot sports photography. My portfolio has always centered around model portraiture and street photography.
However, I shoot with a babby's first rebel and push my skills as much as possible to compensate for the gear. It's limited at lowlight and the only telephoto I have is an 18-135mm zoom lens. I might be able to borrow a friends 75-300mm though.

I also own a 10-22mm lens, but how often are wide angle lenses used for sports photography with good results? I also have the nifty fifty for portraits, but I'm sure they're gonna want more action shots than portraits.

I don't have any funds to upgrade and I don't have the specifics either of how much I'll be making out of this, so I don't think I should invest in gear yet.

My question is, what can I do short of racking up my actuations during the game to get decent shots? What kind of shots should I go after to get into the rhythm? I think the majority of the school games are held in the evening/night which also adds another challenge.

Then don't take the job unless they know what they are getting from you. Forget any fast sports in low light or decent shutter speeds with your gear.
Find out if they would cover some gear rentals. For football you want that reach. The borrowed 75-300 might be ok if you have enough light
>>
>>2919726

Rental gear is your only option. Sports requires at least 100, most pro shooters are 400 and above.

Don't walk in there with a 22 unless you're taking scenic landscapes of the field.
>>
Rent a fast tele, then proceed to rack your actuation right the fuck up in raw mode. Bring a lot of SD cards.

Hey everyone, I was thinking of ways to spice up /p/ and do something fun. I had an idea that each week we choose a picture by a well recognized photographer, and attempt to mimic it. It'd be a good idea

Why in the hell would anyone want a variable aperture lens, especially one that costs $2,000? I assume wildlife photographers don't give a shit about low life capabilities but to argue that this is better than the 70-200 2.8...

Kind of surprised canon sells L glass with this characteristic. Keeps costs low I guess. Or maybe a 2.8 depth of field is so small at 400mm it's useless anyways? *shrug*
67 replies and 11 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
Someone once made a lens of this type an f/2.8
Here's how big it was. The SHEER SIZE and BLEEDING COST are the primary reason.
>>
Because real photographers go out and take pictures with lenses that meet their requirements. Such requirements as sharpness, AF speed, focal length coverage, and not being constant aperture for the sake of being so.

Also, the 200-400/4 is a $5000 lens. And by your logic, the Nikon 200-500/5.6 is a better lens than the AF-S 80-400. It's better... at price. And very good, at that.
>>
>>2913568

ALMIGHTY BIGMA

How were they able to keep the 70-200 2.8 at a reasonable size? Do you need enormous glass past 200mm for a zoom? (especially if it's constant aperture)
