3 MB,
I have a large collection of old game guides and art books that people have shown interest in seeing. The picture I have up was taken by my phone as an experiment (the lighting setup needs work), but I can't help but feel the quality is lacking.

Could anyone recommend a good camera (dslr?) for a beginner whose focus will mainly be on photgraphing books? Is it worth upgrading for this?

I can't use a scanner or anything without destroying the book spine. Can't seem to find a book scanner that is meant for more than just traditional books either.

>>2887257
google how they scan in books and manga. There are guides online that show you how to build a rig on the cheap, some using cellphones as the camera.

Now that Fuji can in to 4k video with xt2. Do you think Fuji will build a more video focused camera?
>>
>>2879090
Fuji has never made acceptable video with their xtrans sensors, so my first impression is that 4k is just a spec to attract customers. If they actually have a half decent video mode I'll be surprised

Should I get a new lens? I was thinking about the Summilux 25mm f/1.4 (500-400€) or the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 (200€).
Or should I save up for a better graphicscard?
Or invest...

What the fuck is the difference? When should I use what?
I kinda understand that smaller aperture = lower depth of field, but how the fuck should ISO/exposure be factored in this?

bump iso for more light, bump exposure for less light
>>
Higher iso = more noise, but brighter picture at same exposure time and aperture.
Learn how far you can go with shutter speed without getting images blurry. I recommend beginners to not go below 1/60th with their kit lens and use smallest possible iso.
>>
>>2893790

You need to get your terms straight. Exposure refers to the overall brightness of an image, so there's no way it can be a factor of itself.

Instead, your three variables are: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Coincidentally, these are listed in order of the magnitude of the effect they have on the image as well.

Since aperture has the biggest effect on how a photo looks, it should usually be the first one you set. You should have an idea of how much depth of field you want in your photo and select...

So I got my hands on one Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 hipster lens and I am not sure how to rate the product. How screwed am I? I'll include photos.
I have no idea if this is fungi or not, might as well be damaged coatings or attempted fungi removal... Any ideas? Any fix?

The subject is cool but maybe get a better angle. Try getting closer to the dish and look down the road instead of perpendicular to it. I hope you get what i mean.

So for the last 6 months ago I have been doing laps around the USA and Canada.

I have an iPhone full of panorama shots and virtually no knowledge of photography, but I feel really inspired to get my hands on a real camera and start building a cool collection.

I'm not looking for award winning shots and insanely expensive gear, but what would some of you seasoned photographers have to say to someone like me?

Should I just jump on the GoPro wagon and take some short videos too? Should I look at a Polaroid camera and make a scrap book? A 35mm? I wouldn't...

You haven't really given any parameters.

How big do you want the camera to be?

Do you think you'll need interchangeable lenses, or is fixed fine?

How much do you want to spend up front?

If you're looking at film cameras too, how much are you comfortable spending ongoing?

How will you be sharing your photos? Online? In person?

What will you be taking photos of? Don't say 'oh a bit of everything' unless you actually mean a bit of everything
>>
for road tripping I'd seriously recommend a gopro, it's compact and has a lot of features, and can be pretty decent at landscape shots too, which you seem to be interested in

I wouldn't recommend polaroids but the idea of bringing a 35mm is pretty cool too, you can just shoot and accumulate the film, wait till the trip is finally over to develop them all at once. that'd give you some nice flashbacks of the awesome memories you've had during your travels!
>>
>>2888244

If you have an iphone full of pictures and it's urging you to farther in the field, why not just jump right into the basics? get off this website and just go learn about photography. you don't necessarily need any more gear at this point, your iphone is a "real camera".

Now if you're aiming to go for a certain look or expand your ability to take (better) pictures, by technical aspects like dynamic range, ISO, shutter speed, manual control, etc, we can talk about that. But if you're...

Go away Ted.

I like his stuff to some degree, but he suffers from the same problem most YouTube people do: He likes to hear himself talk to much. Once I had that thought in mind I couldn't continue to watch his stuff. This was around the time he quit his job to make videos with around 10000 views.
He's a shit photographer, still one of the better photography people on YouTube though.

cant stand his voice. he sounds way too polished and "trained". and compressed.

enjoyed his Rollei MX-EVS video though (ROWLEY FLWEX EE-VEE-ES), in fact, i got mine partly because of that video. but yeah, its tiring to hear him talk for 10 min straight.

Saw the promo video. Amusing for the first half dozen but will get mind-numbingly tedious even faster than boring time-lapse and drone photography. And whereas the latter two do actually have some uses beyond being shitty gimmicks this doesn't.

film is made of a thin layer of gelatin on a thin strip of transparent plastic. When it's rolled up in a spool and gets wet the gelatin from each spooled layer sticks to the next one. If it dries up after getting wet the image-containing layer of gelatin adheres to its base and the neighbouring layer with similar strength - trying to unspool it can tear it off and so on.

I honestly don't know, if you remove the spool from the disposable casette it's in, submerge it in cold water till it rehydrates...

EVERYOOOOONEEE

I'm wondering how this particular photographer achieves these effects in her photos: http://blog.rebeccacairns.com/

Some examples...perhaps someone could reply about each one linked...

The faded look here: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5666/20734296924_6f6edaef26_b.jpg and https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5691/22494512484_f4dd2982e3_b.jpg

The unusual colour tones here: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7379/16269664350_6fda2556d8_b.jpg and https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7508/15751166676_a1ef3b1c93_b.jpg

The slight blurring here (which I think is obvious, it's just out of focus or the shutter speed was longer, and the camera moved?): https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5039/14260287673_aac76dd1e3_b.jpg and https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3692/10863382565_39111964ae_c.jpg

I think this girls work is beautiful, and while I don't want to copy her style or anything, I'm curious of her techniques. I know it's all done on film, for one, which gives peculiar options for creativity. But I don't know much about film, so I'm asking.

The image links you posted are broken

From her blog it looks like most of her black and white is very low contrast with no blacks or whites. Some of the not washed out color images look underexposed with crushed blacks. Lots of desaturation and low-contrast stuff
>>
>>2892815

Weird, they work for me.

I see, thank you. I'm trying to get into both shooting digital and film. Is all of what she does achieved during development? I assume it's not as easy to do on digital, until you open up Photoshop. But digital photograph seems so cheap to me, hence I'm curious to learn and study different film techniques.
>>
>>2892817

That is excluding the crushed blacks, I know that's mostly done in exposure, at least with film.

nikon is cheaper than canon...
>>
Nikon glass is almost always cheaper

Also: Canon glass has a comparatively poor reputation. Seriously. Compare performance from lenses by both companies and nikon will generally come out on top. Canon lenses are wrapped in cheap plastic. The biggest advantage of Canon cameras is purely tonal - they have a warmer colour range and better gradients.

But if you want *realism* you should use Nikon,
thats why forensics officials use it, thats why nasa use it.

Canon 50mm STM 1.8 = 125 usd

Nikon 50mm 1.8 g = 180 usd

What makes photography art? Do you ever feel as if it's "too easy"?

Of course difficulty doesn't necessarily make art good, but I see d/ic/ks grinding 6+ hours a day to get good at illustrating some photorealistic effect, and I can't help but wonder...

>>
The fact that you can have an intended concept in mind and then approach capturing them through photography in a way that works with your concept
>>
The artist's craft is what makes the art good. Photography has a whole different set of skills and moves; what makes a snap great obviously isnt a "photorealistic effect" that is inherent to the medium, while in a realistic illustration it can be.

Okay so i wanna make a kinda "found footage film" because im going camping in the woods with some friends, and think it could be fun.
i Have a Nikon D5500, a 230 LED light and a Rode mini shotgun mic. I think i sould be able to get some decent shots with all this. but i was wondering if anyone would give me som tips og how i can make the movie look better with out breaking the found footage illusion?

and please, i know found footage is overused and many people think its dumb, but this is just a fun project and im looking for some tips...

Not sure why you want a wide angle....?

Wide angle gets more background while you're walking so you don't have to hold the camera super far away from your face.

I just assume this is how it works.

>>2891887
gopro does do 1080p 60 frames which is cool but it might be too wide angle and really bad audio quality.

1 MB,
I need advice on a camera that is really good for filming 1080p 60fps video (bonus if 4K), and under $800. I'd also like at least a 24mm or wider lens. It has to have auto-focus during video and manual exposure control.

I have a Nikon D600 & D5300 for stills and I love Nikon for photos, but I'm going to be shooting some POV adult scenes, and need a good camera for video that has auto-focus.

I'm looking at the Canon G7 X Mark II, but waaay open to suggestions as I'm not up to date on what is good for video these days.
