2 MB,
My friends family asked me to some portraits for christmas cards. First time ever actually using multiple people or doing an actual photo-shoot. They're trying to give me 50$ for the hour but I really don't want to accept because I'm not sure if the photos are worth it. Help me in any way possible, either with critique of the shots or advice on what I should.

So what's the catch with ultra budget lens like CCTV or Fujian. Obviously they're not going to match the latest and greatest, but given the prices are as low as £12 a lens surely it's a good alternative to the kit lens?

>kit lens?

There is a number of different kit lenses including prime lenses. Which one did you mean?
>>
Poor build quality
Poor durability (These are made to be set-and-forget on security cameras)
Poor resolution
Poor distortion
Poor chromatic abberations
Bad artifacts
Heavy lens flare

I would never in any situation choose one of these over a modern kit lens. I would consider one as an addition to a kit lens for low light, but only if I was dirt fucking poor. I would recommend one of those cheap MF lenses like from Mitakon instead, although still only as a low-light supplement to your kit lens.

I had a whole box of these things in the attic, so...

MODS STICKY THIS POST UNTIL SATURDAY.

IF THE MODS DON'T STICKY IT THAT'S COOL I'LL JUST KEEP BUMPING IT.

FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT THERE WILL BE NO "GOOD DEALS" ON DSLR'S/MIRRORLESS FOR BLACK FRIDAY.

I REPEAT: THERE WILL BE NO "GOOD DEALS" ON DSLR'S/MIRRORLESS ON BLACK FRIDAY.

BLACK FRIDAY DEALS ARE ALWAYS ON OLD STOCK (WHICH THEY WANT TO GET OFF THE SHELVES ANYWAY), OFF-BRAND MERCHANDISE THAT THEY GOT FOR CHEAP, AND GENERALLY ANYTHING ELSE THAT THEY ALREADY SELL AT A VERY HIGH MARGIN.

SERIOUS CAMERAS...

HERE'S HOW TO FIND A GOOD DEAL: WAIT FOR MANUFACTURER REBATES. ALL OF THE MAJOR MANUFACTURERS OFFER BIG REBATES AT SOME POINT DURING THE YEAR. CANON IS ESPECIALLY GOOD AT THIS.

OR BUY GREY MARKET AND GET NO WARRANTY.

And that's about it. Photography is a reasonably expensive hobby (though much cheaper than many others), and you're pretty much always going to have to pay full price, especially if it's an in-demand piece of gear. The good news is that entry level gear performs as well as pro gear a few generations ago, so you can't really go wrong with even the cheapest DSLR/mirrorless.

Do not get scammed. If a deal seems like it's better than it should be, it is. Always buy from a reputable dealer (Amazon, B&H, Adorama, Best Buy). Those weird small resellers you've never heard of that offer cameras several hundred dollars cheaper than a multi-billion dollar corporation (you know, the guys who could actually afford to sell at 1% profit) are going to take your money, and then make you fight to get it back when you don't get a camera. This is a tale as old as time. Please don't fall for it.
>>

I know that cameras are expensive and you're looking for a good deal. We've all been there. It's agonizing to really want to get into a hobby, only to have the barrier to entry be significantly higher than you thought it would be. If you really want to get into photography this season, but are on a budget, go used. Used cameras are a great deal, as most of the depreciation is already incurred by the original owner. Adorama and B&H both have used departments, and there's also KEH. Fleabay can be good, but check the reseller rating. Anything...

literal sheeple conditioned by the media do this all the time, patricians are way to smart for such jew tricks.

Hey, I tried /o/ but didn't get a specific answer. I ride motorbikes and wanted to get a gopro or similar style camera for $250 or less (including $10 mount) to record as a dashcam of sorts and for making videos, any ideas which one I should get?

I've been looking at the gopro hero 3 black but I'm not well versed in camcorders.

How do I learn color?

I see people talking about things like sRGB and Adobe RGB coverage and display calibration and whatnot but when I look at images I can't tell what's wrong with the color unless it's way off. Like I saw someone complain that an image had unnatural skin tones but I didn't see it. I can look at an image on different screens and even though I see that it looks slightly different I can't tell which version is the "good" one. When I edit my photos I just play around with the sliders until I like it. But I don't know if what looks good to me looks good to someone else.

Well first of all http://www.colormunki.com/game/huetest_kiosk If you can do this you can learn color.

I'm not sure if you can train your hue acuity though, it might be one of those things that has to happen when you're a wee bab.

Beyond that, learn by reference and by doing. I think we all started with atrocious colors and over time just refined our palette.
>>
Calibrate your display and get used to looking at well colored images a lot. Only then you'll begin noticing which images are off and by how much.

not bad. the flare on the first pic is kind of gross though. the flare on the second is oddly placed. the third one is just kind of dull and nothing stands out. it seems to have value as a /comfy/ pic but it doesn't provoke thought, just feels.

Maybe I'll drop some stuff myself.

109 KB,
Dear /p/,

Today was my first day in this boring family trip. Feeling refreshed from yesterday's 16 hour sleepless travel, I went out with my newly purchased Pentax K-1. (Six months worth from my freelancing as a software developer)

Along with my full-frame camera was a Pentax M 50mm f/1.4, Pentax M 28mm f/2.8, and Samyang 14mm f/2.8.

Unfortunately, I had to tag along with my family. They're touristy as tourists can get. Always taking an Uber to these shitty tourist spots where every little detail in the venues seemed staged and inauthentic.

To start off with my photo dump, I'd like to show you the only picture I bothered to export from Lightroom; a cannon in front of an embrasure. I felt that the wall gave this pleasant well-texture frame for the cannon, pointed towards an out-of-focus, non-immersive city.

My family decided to take a quick look inside some shitty store. I decided to stay outside and hope something interesting comes up. Lo and behold, finally!

A fucking dog tied up on a pole without its owner. After spending the rest of the day walking among boring tourists, I finally get something that portrayed everyday life.

I thought it would be a good story to show a dog that seemed totally alone. This would mean no people and no closeup. Looking like a creepy dognapper, I patiently waited until there were no cars and no passer-by that could ruin this story I wanted to create.

And as the last slow assfuck left my frame, I pressed the shutter. To my relief, the dog made a very impressive face. One of concern for his detachment from society. Of course, that lie was just additional padding from the original lie.

The owner soon went back for the dog and life for the dog went on. Maybe he was unaware of it, but he did great service to me. The dog, that is.

Instead of being an anus on your (paid for) family trip why not enjoy your family and realize that it's not where you go or what camera you have but the love you have for the people your with that make good photos and memories.

I've been a good family member. Taking their photos and shit. I'm just fabricating an angsty narrative! Moving on...

Correction on my first blog post, I mean to say it was the only picture from any (active) tourist hot spots.

Although having been relieved by the dog; like a needle user, I needed more. I tried even harder, a couple of fucks waiting for a bus. Observing a few buses gave me an idea to demonstrate motion blur. A dramatic effect to cover up the mundane activities of city life.

I hurriedly brought out my camera, but queasy from attempting to take pictures of strangers. This queasiness worsened as traffic piled up at the background, hindering me from doing as I imagined.

But after a painstaking minute, the opportunity came up. I took the shot and went on my way.

From all the pressure, I forgot to consider where the bus should be in the moment. This may have been the best moment, may have not. It's too late now. Sometimes you have to deal with what you have. Polishing turd?

What are some experiments you'd recommend a city dwelling beginner try? I live in a moderately big city but I feel like pictures of buildings would be boring. I also can't get to the roofs of most, since trespassing is taken rather seriously here.

I figured I'd want to take pictures like this, but my city isn't this fucking cool.

ok, now THIS is something I'm actually qualified to pontificate on

you should never use onboard audio for any reason whatsoever. get a field recorder like the Zoom H4N or H5N or whatever they're up to. If you really want to do it right, get that and a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG2.

Onboard audio is never an appropriate solution.

Why is that most people who pick-up photography as a hobby do worst pictures than people who just mess around on Instagram? Seriously, this is something I will never understand. I used to browse a local forum dedicated for photography and there were maybe one guy who had some creativity and eye for photography. The rest literally raped by eyes with the complete lack of style compared with shit-postprocessing and very-cliche situations. Why do some many people on these forums think that you can compensate the lack of aesthetics with technical knowledge?
Pic of the opposite...

There's stages to being a newbie photographer. One of them is bokeh-whoring; another is going through all the cliches that exist in those areas of photography that they're interested in.

tl;dr -- don't rage about newbies. They're new, and don't know.

I think it's more of a case of gaining more revenue by not only selling the film, but the cameras themselves.
You can get a 600, Spectra, or SX-70 camera for under $50 all day every day which makes companies like Mint ($300+ for a fucking refurbed Polaroid SX-70) an even smaller niche than instant cameras already were. A new instant camera, that uses IP's current film stock, and has modern features is a smart move for them.

I do think the camera is horribly overpriced, but at least it's not...

I realized that the reason I am stuck in mediocrity is because all my images don't have meaning. I just go out and take photos of anything I find interesting.

I look at photo books and even though not each individual image may be strong they all work together.

How do I find an interesting theme for a series of photographs?

play around, get out of your comfort zone, consult other art (books/music/painting), record your thoughts. how many interesting new ideas do you come across in an average day? you really think everyone else is just overflowing with them?

You have to decide for youself what you want to say with your pictures. For inspiration, look at bodies of work by photographers. Think about what you want and believe.
