21 KB,
Why didn't anybody created an universal lens mount?

Sigma, Tamron, Tokina could create all the lenses from now on to an universal mount.

Then the lenses is attached to an adapter to fit the desired camera.

Then if you have multiple systems, all you have to do is buy multiple adapters for each camera brand and buy only one lens.

Why won't they do it?

Micro four thirds is the modern example.

There are several older versions, like M42, M39, etc.

The reason you don't see it more frequently is that camera manufacturers aren't really camera manufacturers, they're lens manufacturers. The camera, for the most part, is an afterthought, a reason to get you to buy lenses.

of course bro. the fov of the background does not match the perspective of the image with people. the lighting is too unbalanced cuz their clothing shouldn't look so bright next to the shady surroundings.

worst photoshop job ever.

They got the light direction wrong (glaring forehead lights + people with no hard light at all)
They got the metering wrong (completely different exposure for the photoshopped people compared to the background)
Perspective and focal length are obviously both wrong for a group of people that close and a background that large.
If it wasn't kept so intentionally low-res you could zoom in on the bodies and see the fake edges where they were copy-pasted onto the background.

what ever happened to south america half frame dude? those pics were fun

288 KB,
Went out to shoot today, found a neat abandoned warehouse/office building. Didn't get inside but the scenery was still nice.

Still new to photography, so honest and constructive critique please.

RAWtherapee.png
69 KB,
Since Ubuntu 16.04 just got released, why not share some experiences with Linux Programms?

I am currently struggling with RAWtherapee and Darktable. I try to decide between the two, but they make it so hard.
When doing anything but editing photos, RAWtherapee seems the one to go. Great file system, browsing, external editor integration, slider organization, saving, exporting, saving different profiles for the same pic, etc.
But when it comes to actually fotoediting it is kinda meh. Many things seem to be done by several different things at once.
Meanwhile, Darktable is the exact opposite. Its filing system is horrible, it spams .xmp files into your photofolders, it can't detect cameras for shit, it doesn't say where it imports to, its menus are barely anywhere to be found and I haven't actually found out how to EXPORT the goddamn pictures yet. Also, it doesn't seem to support several seperate editings of the same photo.
But when editing photos: OH YES. Just slap two sliders, brush over another one and BINGO, perfect. You can even favourite specific modules.

Does anyone have similar experiences with the two? I feel like I am not good enough at this yet to fully understand this issue

I want to give everyone an example.
Take this file.
I took the duplicate RAW of this and put it in both programms. I first edited it with Darktable and edited a few things. It started to look awesomely battered and the canvas/leather of the shield had a slightly ochre colour while the red painting was still red.
In RAWtherapee meanwhile, I had almost everything emulated to a tee, even the depened shadows and local contrasts, but I just couldn't get the canvas/leather from being a similar shade of red as the paint. Bear in mind, that Darktable doesn't even have seperate colour-curves (or at least I can't find them anywhere), but RAW therapee does.

Is there a good tutorial that can tell me what all these different things like luminosity, chromatiicity, etc. all mean and hwo to apply them?

Thank you. I finally found the chapter about exporting.
Also, I guess I'll have to learn to live with the sidecar files.

Created this with Darktable.
Somehow I can create images with way larger contrast-ranges with Darktable than with RawTherapee

Does someone know how to make your photos look like that?

Its shit. Stop spamming the board.

You know you're supposed to grade your footage, right?

Also, when shooting, you probably want some semblance of a subject to look at.

And you don't really want to give your viewer motion sickness... If you're going to have motion in your shot, get the motion, and then cut the footage, and jump to the next "visually productive" motion. Don't show the "in between" stuff.

Make an actual video, not just a test of your equipment.

Look for job openings as a photographer.
#1 You wont find any.
#2 They wont say "required degree in photography".
#3 This is one of the few fields left where merit still counts.

I don't care about "working" as a photographer. If I want, I can go to any other university. For me, my work is highly personal.

Using the related image as an vague example can any of you guys recommend me some noteworthy photographers that are known for capturing the absurd?

Originally I was going to use the word surreal, but I think "surreal" lacks the impact and shock value that I desire.

I will also note that it does not need to be a fabrication, capture of real scenes would also be good if they fit into the category of absurd. Martin Parr on acid perhaps.

31 KB,
I am doing tourism in the USA. And now I'm in New Jersey.

While I was taking some photos with my Canon t2i.

Some guy came asking me if I wanted to buy a camera.

He offered me a Canon 1dx plus 5 L lenses for 1000 usd. He told me he works for a cancer institution and someone donated some photography equipment as charity.

I bought it. I had money saved for a Sony a6300 anyway.

Seems I found the end of the rainbow.

785 KB,
A friend of mine had all of his gear stolen this past week, about $30k worth.

Authorities were notified as well as local pawn shops.

Other than keeping an eye on ebay and craigslist, does anyone have any suggestions on how else to try to track this stuff down?

For gearfags, it was a 1Dx with about 5 L lenses.

Does he have it insured?
>>
>>2820309

It was stolen from his car, and it is covered under his car insurance.

Mind you, some of the lenses he has have since gone up in price from when they were purchased.

If it isn't found, he can claim it but will only get a portion of the full amount of what his gear is worth. So physically getting the gear back is optimal for his case.

Total noob here:
I took some photos while on a ride. If i remember correctly all are shot with the camera's auto HDR mode - took the easy way out.
Will be posting a couple images from slightly different angles.
What I would like tips on the most is composition, but all other tips are very welcome.
Hope my posting this in a new thread is OK by the rules.

Hello /p/, I've lurked here and posted occasionally for around a year at this point and finally have enough time to post some pictures from a trip I had to the Philippines last summer. This was the first time I had brought along a somewhat modern camera with me on a trip and was also the first time I tried to shoot in raw. Looking back on these I realize there's some very obvious errors that I made, but most of this was me trying to get my feel for how good composition/lighting/subject works. I'd appreciate any constructive criticism on these.

324 KB,
Good afternoon, /p/

I've gotten a lot of questions from here and elsewhere over the years about how I meter for certain scenes and different film types so I finally made a detailed blog post about it. It's especially helpful for those crazy backlit Ektar photos as well as some other situations. It's a long one but I hope you guys find some good info in there. Here's the link: http://www.alexburkephoto.com/blog/2016/3/28/metering-and-exposing-color-film

I don't have a ton of new images to post but I may as well dump them here while I'm at it. Here's one that's older but I just recently had it drum scanned by some guy I met on Flickr.

Is there a correlation between the two for you? Do you ever take music with you when you go shooting? Does it inspire you? If so what do you listen to when you're out there?

For me, music is the driving force in everything creative in me but I still love photography. So for the past year i've been trying to combine the two in photographing live shows. But getting into that field is so competitive. Plus I'm still trying to figure out what camera would be best for me at a decent price

Anyways
You're inspirations are what I'm getting...

Hate to break it to you guys, but the boxes are all fucking empty. Special order only.
The prices aren't anything special. There is a better range of black and white emulsions available in Australia. Acros 100 is it. You might find the normal Ilfor or Kodak range too.
For 35mm colour, you're shooting Fuji, unless you want to pay through the ass for overpriced Kodak. Special emulsions include Superia 400 Premium, which is a few hundred yen more expensive and gets you "better" Asian skin tones, Venus 800, and Natura 1600. As we all know, fast film is for children, and looks like ass, unless you overexpose it, thus making it slow film, so I didn't bother. Then there's Fujicolour 100, which is cheap and sharp. Then there's Velvia 100 and 50, and then nothing.
In 120, you get Fuji Pro160NS, Fuji Pro400H, the Velvias, or you're back to highway robbery prices for Ol' Yeller.
When you're not at Yodabashi HQ, and you find a little print shop that still has some film for sale, it's in 3x27's of 400 Premium, or fuck off. You can't buy film at non-photo shops. You can develop film at print shops, which are reasonably easy to find, but they're all run by super old people who would have retired 15 years ago anywhere else. They mail out E6. The prices are as per normal. You will be treated like a crazy person when you ask for film or film services.
Japanese people will *not* use expired film, if you see some on a shelf in a little print shop, ask to buy it and there's every likelihood they'll give it to you for free. I was given 4 rolls of Provia 400X (pic related) and 2 rolls of Neopan 400 by the old gentleman I got to process my film. He treated me like a crazy person.

Secondly. Buy your cameras on eBay.

There are a faintly ridiculous number of secondhand camera shops in Tokyo. I spent several days schlepping around many of them, thanks to guides posted by JapanCameraHunter and TokyoCameraStyle.
Believe it or not, rare cameras are rare. You won't find hard to find things, and when you do, they will be expensive. Camera collecting is a national sport in Japan, and they're better at it than you.
I saw ONE Konica Hexar. It was 65000 yen.
I saw ZERO GR's.
All of the FM3A's were over 50000.
I saw ONE 28/2.8 Ai-S, and I bought it.
I saw 3 GW690's; 1 broken one for 20000, 1 beat to shit one for 45000, 1 minter for 70000.
These are not good odds, or good prices.
I went into at least a dozen stores.
There is sweet fuck all in the way of MF gear, and when you find it it's beat to shit, or very expensive. (Except for Pentax MF lenses, they can't give that shit away)
As I said above, you will find the gear you want cheaper and a thousand times easier on the internet. Just do it. Don't come to Japan hoping to find something hard to find.
Pic related is what I bought back with me.

Ken Rockwell actually has an article on this and comes to the same conclusions.

For web and everyday photo I'm inclined to agree, but it's hard to dispute that pro control layouts, features and sensors can help in some situations.

>can help in some situations.
Yes, but the self awareness to realize that most of us will never ever be in those situations seems like the hardest part of buying gear. Getting things that would be better for you IF... is a trap with a big price tag, and no real world benefit.

26 KB,
Another day I went to a marriage of two japanese descendants.

And besides the pro photographers hired to cover the event a lot of the guests had their DSLR's with them too. I mean, A LOT!

The total sum of DSLR's from the guests was higher than the DSLR from the pro photographers. I wouldn't doubt some of the guests had better gear than the hired photographers.

Is this common with japaneses??

Its due to their genetics. Their eyes are too thin to see the world as everyone else does, they can see the world better through a $1500 lens. They use cameras with fancy lenses in the same way we wear glasses or contacts. Also their penises are all so small that they need to use cameras as a sort of courting tool to attract a partner.

383 KB,
Hello, /p/.

Longtime lurker / occasional shitposter here... figured it was time to post some shots my GF and I have taken over the years.

I'll just go through some of my favorites from the site... forgive the disgusting watermarks, they are because we got tired of having to explain to people who took each shot.

This is just a hobby. I've been doing it for about 14 years, her about 4. We have sold some prints for charity, but that's about it.

No captives, just wildlife.

Enjoy.
