>>744934 Responding from the thread it was posted in: >>744926 They were talking about how Hiro is viewed as really dubious in the Japanese IT industry and how despite claiming to be broke, he has generated some 20 million in funding outside of Japan, basically saying that he has fled from his debts at home in order to make money elsewhere. They also comment on the usage of adblock here, by us. One としあき comments on how Hiro is percieved... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I don't know why it took so long, but over at /g/ we figured out a way to reduce costs at 4chan. Substantially. >>>/g/56946920
Essentially, most of the costs towards running 4chan are bandwidth costs. We could reduce the number of requests (and that would also have an effect), but moot and crew did a pretty fucking good job at that during his tenure.
We propose that 4chan's image and threads become distributed. For those who are familiar, Sad Panda's Hentai@Home is essentially... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>748078 >and those seeders were to serve large static files instead (images, videos, threads), then 4chan.org would not have to be responsible for providing the bandwidth to peers. what happens if there are no available seeders?
would you host each board separately? like if nobody is seeding /po/ it's just a dead board?
how would single boards not get raped by ddos easier?
>>748078 Let's do a brief technical review on how IPFS will work, and how it can integrate into 4chan.
A machine will host an IPFS node. These nodes perform the bulk of the work in regards to hosting, distribution, and certifying authenticity of files.
4chan.org will have its own IPFS node. In its database, it will have a local copy of everything already being hosted on 4chan. So you may be thinking, "That doesn't sound like it's saving us anything at all!", but as it turns out, storage... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
It's time to get serious. No alternate site is ever going to survive without having unique features.
I know a lot of you basically just want 4chan without the problems coming from our current owner and mods. and because of the long history of alternate sites dying you don't want to migrate anywhere that doesn't already have a high amount of traffic.
However, I propose that what is needed to generate enough interest to keep an alternate site alive is something fresh. 4chan clones will never be anything other than 4chan clones with a community... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
There's already boards with unique or "not on 4chan" features. Card games, liveupdating of posts-in-progress, radio, mp3 support, limited posting windows, and so on. Hell, until late last year you had to go to other boards for SJIS support. But none of these things are personally necessary to me. The community is the defining feature of any image or textboard. You can have all the bells and whistles in the world, but if your community is awful then the site itself is awful.
Is an exodus plausible now? Where will you go if Hiro really starts selling user info and deletes your favorite board? What will you do if this all goes sideways like 2ch and this all just degrades into a mess that will never be recovered from as old anons move on with their lives and there is no one left to carry the torch?
What will you do if 4chan dies? This time it is real. If this website dies, it doesn't matter if another website spring up right after, there will never be a website like this. Even with all its flaws and imperfections, this website was the... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>744967 Recent events very closely mirror what got him kicked off of 2ch. He claims the site is in danger then implements special privileges for Pass users to increase incentive, even though all the signs point to the website not being in any sort of financial crisis.
I envy 2ch, it's probably far better off now that they don't have to deal with this guy.
Notes: - Population only includes Anonymous posters. - /qa/'s population had an abnormally large spike the day its data was gathered. - While 4chan has an international user-base, most of them come from developed countries, so I consider the percentage of mobile devices accessing the web in the USA to be more representative of that of 4chan's than the worldwide figure.
- /b/, /pol/, /v/ and its spin-offs are responsible for half of the bandwidth usage (176GB). - /wg/, /gif/ and /hr/ are the boards with the highest total image content (MB) to number of users ratio. - /i/, /hc/ and /sp/ are the boards with the highest number of images per poster.
>>735961 >>735971 >The maximum theoretical bandwidth usage by the whole site is therefore 354GB. We have to HALVE it. >- /b/, /pol/, /v/ and its spin-offs are responsible for half of the bandwidth usage (176GB). Sounds like the solution is pretty well solved. >>747422 Well, he's got no sponsors anymore and we don't know anything about how much income he makes from passes. Evidence looks bad for him, but he could be right and this is a case of the boy crying wolf.
>>745810 >Hiro literally talked to the BBC >Didn't reply in broken English
What the hell even is this shit. I still don't even particularly believe this site is in financial danger. What the hell is are these "tough ways"? Is he literally going to put malware on the site like he said?
Anyone can see that /vip/ and 4chan passes are a fucking scam right now.
If data usage was such an issue, how the fuck would creating another board help? Yeah, there are a few more people purchasing passes, but that's not even a short-term plan for income. It'll possibly help bring in a small amount of income for a few weeks, but there is no long-term financial goal here.
People are only purchasing these passes right now due to fear of losing 4chan altogether.
Data usage was an issue not by itself but because of the associated costs, passes solve that problem by generating more income. I'd assume people buying passes have been for some time on 4chan, so its not like /vip/ is attracting news users, thus the increase in the data usage generated by /vip/ is proportional to a decrease in the combined data usage by every other board.
Passes need to be renewed, they are only good for a year, so it's an annual income we are talking about. Plus if that doesn't work, or only does so partially, we can always resort to... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>706294 Hiro, I'm not sure what kind of money it takes to cover fully running 4chan monthly or yearly, but may I suggest an attempt at a donation drive streamed event? You would be surprised at the generosity of stream viewers, particularly in defense of a site they love to use like 4chan.
I'm involved in a long time semi-recognized cross-board entertainment event referred to in the image I posted. The idea was to simulate the boards of 4chan and the memes that originated on them as players... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I think the money that could be earned by monetizing the Cup far outweighs any ethical concerns one might have with regards to such a deal. This site runs on people doing it for free, and we at the 4CC have been doing it for free for this long, so why not capitalize on the community's generosity and siphon some off the top, so to speak?
Hiroyuki range banned people en masse in 2ch to make them buy 2ch passes (ronin). The most popular boards require you to have a 2ch pass to start new threads. He was kicked off 2ch when a hacker found out he was storing and selling data of all ronin users. Hiro fakes not knowing English well and makes dumb posts on purpose when people make legitimate questions to derail the thread. Despite supposedly having money problems he's already refused two millionaires wanting to buy the website.
