>just study real analysis >if you study hard you can do it :^) >each problem takes at least 3 hours or more unless i look it up >answers jump a lot of stuff because its intuitive apparently >people in my class are either way ahead of me or dont kno nothing like me >read definitions like a slave but stil dont kno how to use it for my homeworks >le study hard meem XD
i have 11 problems due tomorrow and right now we just started sequences and defining limits. i am between panicking and saying fuck it and use my one time drop. i have all 70s in my hw and everyone else is getting 90s and i dont want to fuck up my gpa with a meem class when i could have taken intro to real and still get a job as soft eng yes my love for learning mathematics has died because i found my limit i did 3 math classes last semwster and i thought i could handle real analysis wtf
Does it concern any of you that everything that has exists and will exist will one day just be gone. Not only the human race, but everything. The planet, the galaxy... EVERYTHING. All of our accomplishments and advancements will have been meaningless.
I'm a cs major and there's not that much cringe in my class but I go to a pretty good school, the closest there is to cringe is talking about memes on facebook group chats (never in real life) and maybe the occasional literal neckbeard (but the neckbeards are generally pretty smart and chill people)
>>8390715 IQ is largely hereditary and I was unfortunately not gifted. People who were can become great men and women and discover things that benefit me and mankind. I can contribute to society in my own way and they can theirs.
Although tbqh, the fact that even at high IQ's and highly educated brackets of people political opinion is still split massively from spectrum to spectrum shows that even they are motivated by base human instincts and not above irrational thinking.

>>8386422 Another kind of thread I absolutely despise is the /pol/tard in disguise. The guy who goes on here with his not-so-subtle "is it true niggers have a lower average IQ?", and then CONTINUES to get 200+ replies every single time. He is the same guy that gets BTFO at the dinner table by his mom, runs to his computer because "look at the SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE MOM!".
I don't care that you are a /pol/lack, I even browse /pol/ myself, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep /pol/ in /pol/. For one second I just want to be able to talk about Hilbert spaces without being reminded of JEWS NIGGERS KEK HILLARY CAN'T STUMP THE TRUMP OBONGO ALSO THIS REALLY MADE ME THINK WHITE WOMEN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS RAPEFUGEES ALT-RIGHT NATSOC JEW FAGGOT.
What do you guys think about psychiatry, psychology, and other mental health care-related fields?
I ask because, so far, I've been diagnosed by both a psychologist and psychiatrist as having four different disorders: Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
However, I can't help but notice that most people don't consider these to be real "illnesses" and that these things are entirely "in your head" and that you can easily "will yourself out of" these problems. In fact, even I'm not sure that I believe these to be real illnesses.
Nobody in my family (or anybody else, for that matter) seems to give a single fuck about me having been diagnosed with these disorders. A cousin of mine simply scoffed at the idea of me being diagnosed with ADHD, making a dismissive gesture and proclaiming "everybody has ADHD!" My mother tells me that I need neither medication nor psychotherapy, that I should use my own will power to stop having depression. Other people tell me that social anxiety isn't a "real problem".
I've taken antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication in the past, and they only increased my misery tenfold.
Meanwhile, my psychiatrist wants to stop prescribing me Adderall (which I've been taking for nearly two years) because it might hasten the onset of schizophrenia. Mind you, as far as I know, nobody in my family has been formally diagnosed with schizophrenia. And the only reason my psychiatrist is concerned about this because I told one of the nurse practitioners who works at this same practice that I wanted to be referred to a geneticist to have myself tested for any possibly genetically inheritable disorders and/or diseases (such as: Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder, etc.) And my psychiatrist wants to prescribe me Abilify instead.
So do you guys think that psychiatry, psychology, and/or other mental health care-related fields are bullshit?
>>8389335 In my country teachers study at the same universities as regular masters (I'm in the last few months of physics). You kind of get an impression of what the average teacher is capable of and holy shit it's embarrassing. The problem I think really is that nobody gives a shit about teaching any longer. It's poorly paid, features no authority any longer and nobody respects it. As a consequence the people who go for it are usually the people who simply don't know what else to do. And that's exactly... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>8386762 I only managed to do this twice. Your brain stays up though, which defeats the purpose of sleeping, because when you sleep, brain connections are restored. When you lucid dream, your mind stays up, therefore you will be so fucking tired afterwards. Its not worth it, and its not that special anyways.
Is it normal to feel like your intelligence is deteriorating? Over the past year or so, I find it harder and harder to put my thoughts into words. Compared to most people on /sci/ who can form coherent sentences or arguments, whatever I end up typing comes out completely retarded, and usually not what I intended to say, or at least not properly expressed right. And I feel like this is constantly getting worse. How do I fix this? Read more books? I haven't really read or touched liberal arts in over a year, maybe its necessary to not turn into a babbling retard. Even... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I just read through a recently published article about the psychology and reasoning behind why people get so infuriated with poor grammar. It referred to a small study made by a linguist (a Finn, I believe), and basically arrived to the conclusion that it's a way for people to establish social status over others. No different from judging people by their wealth, looks, clothes, or grasp of some specific etiquette.
I could not possibly disagree more. So I thought I'd like to hear /sci/'s views on this.
>>8391001 >(cont.) Personally, I've always been a grammar nazi. Now yes, I do make my own mistakes as well. After all, English is my third language. Despite that, regardless of the language used and how familiar you are with it, I don't see a problem in making the occasional mistake. I see a problem when someone makes constant, basic mistakes, all the time... and then gets all offended when someone points it out to them, or suggests they should improve themselves.

>>8391001 >why people get so infuriated with poor grammar >arrived to the conclusion that it's a way for people to establish social status over others I agree with this, it's also quite obvious, if you think about it.
Im a massive grammar nazi, even though rationally I disagree with it. In german, for example, if in a university context you use the wrong grammatical gender for something people will look at you funny. but honestly, grammatical... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>8391018 I think english actually works very well. There's no telling that any planned language we adopt won't morph over time as every other language does, which would somewhat defeat the purpose as we'd likely end up with a similar language to the present one.
We naturally adapt languages for efficient communication based on our experiences using the language is basically what I'm saying, and these adaptations do not necessarily need to follow well thought-out or structured rules.
/sci/ would never know but railcars are absolutely filthy things, especially the roofs which are never ever washed. As a result it's very oily and anyone on top of them would likely slip off as there is no place to grip.
So.. this is bullshit right? I don't know these things at all.If not, it's badly written and didn't cite a single source. I don't know these things. I hail from /lit/ but I know that when you're trying to convince me of a miracle cure you speak to me in terms of how it provided the chemical conditions necessary for change. You don't just do.. this..
Stephen Hawking says that the universe can spontaneously create itself out of nothing. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, but I haven't been able to talk about it much with others. I remember someone else saying something along the lines of, if you put together all the matter, energy, dark matter, dark energy - all the stuff and anti-stuff - in the universe, you get a zero sum. If we can apply Occam's Razor to the question, why is there something instead of nothing, it seems like the simplest answer is that something, everything, is technically nothing.... Comment too long. Many people may be afraid of something silly things when talking about them, for example: The end of the world, the control of governments and other conspiracy theories.
One thing that has given me fear is the decay of false vacuum, it is something that will occur in billions of years (this would occur if there is no physical more than the standard model) I will not be a witness to this event but still scare me (I have no idea why, but I think I have an existential fear with exotic deaths)

>>8390158 The problem is not the fact that your stomach feels empty, the problem is that your body would still be releasing the hormones it would normally release if your stomach was empty, even while being full of the inert substance.
For example, if you drink so much water you can't hold any more, but don't eat all day, your body will still release the hormones it generally would when it was low on glucose. So really all you'd accomplish is having to eat many small portions to become satisfied.
