File: stupid dynamics question.png (70 KB, 521x749) Image search: [iqdb] [SauceNao] [Google]
70 KB,
Sorry if this is a dumb question
Just started on MIT's OCW dynamics course, very first problem I've gotten wrong but don't see what I did wrong
pic related
Can anyone explain what I did wrong to get this answer?
>>
>>7763588
The fuck is this?

Dynamics is supposed to be done with diffy Qs, not these high-school tier formulas.

Also step 4 you squared v2 but already took the root on the RHS. It should just be v2 without raising the power.

Thanks, I knew it would probably be something stupid asf

What the fuck... why did you use energy? This is literally high school Calculus. Fuck, not even. It's literally Algebra II; you don't need to know any physics to be able to understand/solve this problem.

I'll type out the work in just a second.

Is this a good introductory text?
>>
>>7763550
My used it.

Has a very well refined pedagogy, the author puts real effort in to trying to help students understand the material instead of just trying to impress other physicists.

Very comprehensive for an introductory text. My edition including intro to SR, QM and particle physics.

/sci/ elitists will tell you it's utter shit and to get a real textbook.

I was wondering, is pic related considered popsci by /sci/? What about 'Phantoms in the Brain'?
>>
absolutely not. Kahneman is nobel laureate.
inb4 not real nobel
inbox behavioural econ not real science
>>
It's popsci but it's good popsci
>>
>>7763557
nobel doesn't mean not popsci.
However this is a really interesting book.

28 KB,
Are these Feynman lecture videos recommended or is there something better? I'm just a maths major who wants to learn some physics while watching comfy youtube videos.

Also, can you recommend me something with assignments too?

You will get a lot more out of these.

What's a good, basic introduction to differential equations?

Textbook general, I guess.

I've been recommended these books to learn math:
The Mental Calculator's Handbook

Algebra by Gelfand and Shen

Elementary Geometry from an Advanced Standpoint

Anything you would add or take away?

I like it. I don't use it much, but I think services like that in general are awesome--definitely a step in the right direction. The internet is an awesome platform for education, but distributing education over the internet is still in its early days.

What does this mean when talking about suitable domains?
>>
>>7763411
It means x is real.
>>
>>7763411
x = variable x
∈ = 'is an element of'
R = real number set
Hence, x∈R is simply a small note stating that x is a real number.

File: Fusion Reactor.jpg (1 MB, 1920x1280) Image search: [iqdb] [SauceNao] [Google]
1 MB,
All right let's have a serious discussion about commercial fusion energy and it's viability as a major energy source for society.

I'd like to start by saying that, even though the physics behind fusion and the engineering required to make fusion reactors is undeniably dank, I don't think it's gonna be a major power source for society. Not because we can't do it, but because we won't do it.

Fusion, compared to other energy sources like solar, biofuel and hell, just regular oil, is just too damn expensive. However let's be...
>>
>>7763370
>Still, the price of solar power is steadily going down and heading for dirt cheap, and battery technology is advancing nicely to complement it.

I think you have neglected an important fact, in that some places it is not very sunny, and that winter exists. Battery technology also isn't really advancing that rapidly, at least not in the areas that are important for grid-scale storage- I'm not sure where you got that impression. (However, development in redox flow batteries...

Public opinion is retarded.

Solar panel manufacture is massively polluting.

Also, has net energy gain over the lifetime of the panels been achieved yet?

Sorry to say but you're a victim of clever marketing and you are about to be dashed upon the jagged rocks of reality.
>>
>>7763403
>Also, has net energy gain over the lifetime of the panels been achieved yet?

Yes, and they have since 2010. In fact, by some estimates, the energy deficit from all the years that solar panels were a net energy loss has already been paid off.

Each person has a subjective experience of reality simulated by their brain. This is a biological electrochemical interplay of neurons. Yes you live in a simulation. No it isn't a big computer simulation ruling your life. This very post is just my subjective ego utilizing metaphorical symbology called english through electrical devices called computers. Eventually you and I will talk more directly. the speed of communication increases while the distance matters less. That errors called the Mandela effect are just...

How would you explain someone who has never once taken a STEM class on weight gain, type of food, and what actually makes a person fat?
>>
>>7763042
When you are eating then youre eating something called calories.
When youre moving youre burning these calories.
When you burn more calories than you eat you lose weight, when you burn less you gain weight.
