It is interesting though, because we're tiny specs on a small rock in a limitless universe, with infinite parallel universes (if the universe is infinitely large). We're also tiny on the time scale, with a lifespan of 70 years on an infinite time scale.
It gives me existential feels, knowing that we have only 70 years to exist on a tiny planet,... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

What's the fastest and least time consuming way to study Maths? Let's say I have a Linear Algebra test coming up the next week, and have a weekend to work on it. And umm, study techniques general i guess?
>>7850382 Hope somebody could help, currently am mindlessly spamming problem sums again and again, literally like a no life asian, it works, but it takes up too much time, i need to have a way gain the necessary skills in a more productive manner.
Just intelligent enough to achieve something worthwhile and be relatively successful. Well, not only that; I also want to understand things and have a grasp of how "life" works.
I feel like I'm doomed to being mediocre no matter how hard I work or how desperately I strive to be "special". I'll graduate soon, and I feel that I had to put in 10x more work than anyone else--where everyone else gains an intuitive understanding nigh instantly, I'm stuck... Comment too long. I think there are 2 types of genius. Some, like Gauss, are just magical. Theres no fucking explaining how he did some of the stuff he did - these people are on another level.
But plenty of genius fall in to the other category - people who are brilliant and do great things, but you get the feeling that if you work hard enough you could be just as great. Eg: Feynman.
The only way to increase your intelligence is practice. Just like weightlifting or any other kind of training, you wont progress unless you are frequently pushing the edge of your mental faculty. Work,... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
So, I saw this graph of 10 vertices. I then thought to myself "Huh, no matter how you arrange these 10 vertex there will always be at least one place where two edges cross".
But this thought has now been bothering me all day. My issue being I am pretty damn certain this is true but have no way to write a formal math proof. So how could I go about doing that so I can turn my hand waving intuitive nonsense into something more substantial.
>microbiology lab, dont know anyone >see short cute nerdy blonde girl >make sure shes my partner >she's pretty cool, plays LoL and watches my little pony though, would still hit it >turns out shes engaged, w/e i have a girlfriend too >friends on and off next 2 years >one day we go to the park off campus and get drunk... Math major here. What makes my bachelors in math equal, or at least worth the same as any other math undergrad around the nation (USA)? I mean does it even matter the courses that I am taking? Do people that want me for their job give 2 shits about my degree, or that’s just fucking lies? I want to work somewhere that involves applied math or at least at a bank. For example here a list of math courses I taken so far: Probability (not statistics each course is separate, junior course) Intro to PDE (junior course) ODE (junior course) Abstract Algebra (junior course)... Can meme evolution be studied by network topology or graph theory? Is anyone working on this already, I tried google scholar and UIUCs library, but wasn't sure what search terms to use or what fields to look in.
>attempting a proof of an open problem >create a hypothesis based on existing evidence >devise and execute a method of repeatable experimentation to test hypothesis under different circumstances >an "elegant pattern" emerges
not sure quite how to phrase my question. Are there false positives for elegance in mathematics that indicate the /sci/entist is suffering pareiodelia (thing where you see jesus in toast/see what you want to see) or is an elegant result mean that you are "right" and were able to successfully test your hypothesis/were right about your hypothesis ?
how can you confirm this on your own before sharing it with someone ?
this is math, get out of here with your empirical evidence bullshit. And yes there are things in math which everyone believes to be true based on the fact that it has been true in every case, but still hasn't been proven. Look up the Rieman Hypothesis.
>>7849739 Well, just because you see a pattern doesn't prove anything. You have to mathematically prove that this pattern holds, like for example saying the Euler Mascheroni constant is irrational based on the premise that there is no pattern would never be accepted, so the reverse shouldn't either. However, there is nothing wrong with contributing to the solution by saying you've noticed a pattern and others should look into it if you can't actually prove the existence of a rule mathematically on your own.... >>7849766 it makes sense. assume this is a mathematical pattern that describes a process in a less pure branch of science and the magnitude of the rate of change in the pattern is the important part of it. however when reduced to a sequence it is very simple, that is the entire sequence can be accurately predicted and easily verified from the first 2 terms.
your post is very helpful. How do you go from asserting a pattern to defining a mathematical rule based on that pattern ? what makes a would be /sci/entist either... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
who the fuck cares? why are there so many threads asking if guy X is a genius? there are geniuses, and there are idiots, and then there's you. are you a genius? if not, why? what are you doing right now to justify not being smart enough to be a genius? why aren't you making strides in your field? because you had to shitpost on /sci/? fuck off, go open a path for discovery instead of fantasizing that someone else is or isn't.
If you want to make an immediate difference then why don't you get involved in UAV research? I have and twice already I've worked on concepts that after searching Google for originality I could only find it in some guy's PhD thesis done only a few years ago. Not only that but my research always came to the same conclusion as theirs meaning my methods were valid. After the initial euphoria at believing myself to be a super genius I realized that it's really because the field is a) new and b) small-scale meaning that I can do the same thing at home that guys... >>7849675 I agree. Much can be learned and figured out in the first decades of a new technology. Breakthroughs happen so fast that they often happen in many places at the same time. There's actually a plane that uses some of the methods you are talking about. It essentially has 2 loops, one on each side of the plane where normal wings are usually. It makes it much more compact. That one is better than the full loop across the entire plane because it helps eliminate vortex drag.

I'm sorry in what way is UAV lift any different than AV lift?
>what two PhDs
Link their dissertations and show your own work.
>contrarianism on this board and the persistent claim that amateurs can't make any useful contribution to technology
Make a contribution then. You know who has made a contribution? Picture related and their 24 billion dollar budget. But I'm sure they've missed something you can rig up in your garage with hobby store parts. Waiting with baited breath to see it. You are a poor communicator and even if your 'ideas' materialize in a testable reproducible product, your personal limitations with hamper the planning, seed and growth cycle of a business.
Why do I make this bold assertion? You have written 346 words and have failed to explain some basic things.
