When you think of a memory where you thought you were right and realize looking back on it with your current state of mind and self that you were wrong? Well, everyone experiences that in their own way on a topic of life and every realization then turns into someone's truth, therefore each of their truths on a topic is a universe within itself ( universe: a particular sphere of activity, interest, or experience). This also is shown by the fact that everyone sees things differently or notices different things depending on their experiences and/or truths; but they can still...

What are some good alternatives to /sci/ where actual discussion takes place instead of shitposting, memeflinging?

Is there a place for semi-casual science discussion without /pol/ and high-schoolers shitting up the place? Or does the lack of rigour in such a place inevitably attract those types?

So since all of the US election fallout I've been hearing a lot of people and purported experts espouse notions that implicit bias against women, minorities, etc. played a large role in the election result.

As someone with a B.Sci in Biology, and an interest in neurobiology and genetics, I'm curious as to the actual validity of these claims. IIRC, many of these purported researchers use tools like "Implicit Bias Tests" as evidence to support their conclusion, but I don't see how this can be considered valid. I myself have taken 2 of these tests;...

Well yeah, that's what I'm coming to realize. But I guess I'm wondering if there are any further neuroscience studies, maybe even brain scans, anything more empirical than simply this test? Are there any better studies out there? Because this is what I see presented most often as evidence for implicit bias by a lot of "social science academics" these days.

The term "existential threat" means nothing.

I'm trying to compose a mechanical design for a slow-moving crawling robot that can overcome strong water currents. Currently the design is based on sea slug locomotion and works as follows:

1. Central body uses a screw to drill into the ground for a "foothold".
2. Arm stiffens, rotates forward and touches the sea floor.
3. Arm uses a screw to burrow for a "handhold".
4. Central body unscrews itself from floor.
5. Arm loses stiffness, then contracts, dragging robot forward.
6. Repeat.

I have two questions: Is there a better...

You should get in contact with the people in charge of enrollment at your college and ask them to help you get better at maths. Loads of people are in your position, they would have a way to get you up to speed.

This. Just because a project needs jobs doesn't mean it's making the country any money. That is a very basic and uneducated view of economics. Giving people factory jobs that a human can do may bring the people more money, but it will end up increasing prices and be less efficient overall. In the same way, giving people a maintenance job in a green power plant may bring more money to the unemployed, but then everyone is society is paying more for that energy because it's not as cheap as fossil fuels....

Two centuries ago, calculus was typically taken at the end of undergraduate programs at universities. A century ago, it starting being taken earlier in college course plans. Now, high school graduates typically have taken calculus or at least have been exposed to some of the underlying concepts, and I imagine this trend will continue.

In a century, what will be the "normal" starting point for college mathematics? Linear algebra? Real analysis?

Will this trend continue? Will college freshmen eventually be taking what we see as graduate courses?

For ease of computation, base 2 works best. That's why nearly every digital computer uses it.

For niftyness, base ten is pretty dope.

For those who subscribe to contrarianism, i would recomend base 0.

Personally I think the Arabic systems is quite nice, mostly because it integrates well with everything else we do. The meaning of 9(2) is immediately distinguishable from 92.

The Chinese pronounce numbers interestingly. Ten is Shi, one is Yi, eleven is Shiyi. Then new words come up for each new place. So there's a word for 10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.
