321 KB,
Hey, /sci/. I just got this email, and I was wondering if anyone had any books that could take me from knowing differential equations (and real analysis) to being able to do this.

I really would love an NSF fellowship, and I am working directly under this professor, so I think I could get this.

"BTW, if anyone knows of an undergraduate student capable of solving coupled non-linear second order partial differential equations in heterogeneous domains with discontinuous boundaries, please let me know. We would want to encourage this student to pursue an NSF fellowship."

If he is using the formal definition of "evidence" the statement is fine. Under the colloquial definition of "evidence" it is dumb. He probably meant the formal definition of evidence meaning that statement would be like saying: "The fact that we have not seen an event which should increase or decrease our confidence in x does not indicate we should decrease our confidence in x".

Why is Lactose Intolerance the default position in mammals*?

Milk is the ONLY food source that exists PURELY to be a food source. Why then would it be advantageous to develop a gene that PREVENTS you from having that food source? What good is that?

Clearly in modern times, its advantageous to be able to consume milk, so why did LI evolve in the first place?

*Ability to digest lactose only evolved ~ 5-10 000 years ago in Eurasia (during agricultural era). Most humans on the planet are lactose intolerant.
18 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
It's probably to separate the offspring from their mother. Animals always go for the easiest food source available, so that gene prevents offspring from becoming complete parasites to their mother.
>>
Everyone has the gene that codes for lactase (the enzyme that digest lactose). Everyone as a baby can drink milk from mother.

The reason why, is that humans were hunters back then. Why would you waste aminoacids and other nutritients to produce enzymes you had no use for? People were not drinking milk back then because there were no milk or domestic animals! Bigger civilizations saw it as savage to drink milk, it was viewn like drinking the urine from an animal.

The trait of not having a reduced production of lactase started in the british islands and eurasia actually....

There are other reasons to use milk, but sure it's main reason is for food.

I don't think you understand how gene mutations and natural selection works, it's not always advantageous.

You can buy lactose-free milk, it still has all the proteins except lactose is broken down to galactose and glucose.

So recently it seems there's been a rise in the mention of certain fad/meme diets like keto, paleo, and pure veganism. Are macros really that important? Is it mainly calories? Are fats bad for you? cba posting sources but ill speak from both experience and being read up on this subject.

no carbs/mainly fat - really good for losing body fat fast, without being insanely hard to go through. Trans fats and such are unhealthy.

pure vegan - you'll need b12 supplements otherwise your nervous system will get damaged. seems to work pretty good

Getting all macros isnt necessary, but sure helps you with life quality overall. (exercise is rly important for that)

I think the best way to go if you wanna be all healthy is not to eat sugars, not to binge...

Macros aren't everything.

If your protein source doesn't contain a full range of amino acids, then it doesn't matter how much protein you eat.

If you are eating fats with a certain chain length or certain types of atomic bonds between the carbons, than it vastly changes how your body will respond to them.

I'm grading homework right now and I'm honestly a bit frustrated:

(∃x)(∀y)(x = y^2)

where the domain is the reals.

I see this as being translated in two different ways:
>There exists an x for all y such that x = y^2.
which I see as false
vs
>There exists an x for each y such that x = y^2.
which I see as true.

What do you guys think?
12 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>8457796
It's false, obviously.
What it is saying is essentially something like...
There exists a person X such that for all people Y, X is the mother of Y = there is one person who is everyone's mother.
This is clearly nonsense.
Also, for each = for all. Also, even if the quantifiers changed places it would still be false in the reals because negative numbers aren't squares.

What confuses me is how someone who does not understand basic logic is allowed to grade homework.

Why does the generalization of topology in metric spaces to topological spaces make sense?

For example, it seems like continuity loses its meaning in arbitrary topological spaces that aren't homeomorphic to metric topologies.

without a metric, continuity becomes a formal property that depends on the topology and just keeps track of open-closed data

Suppose I wanted to build a lab from scratch.

The first thing would be to acquire reagents.
However, cavemen didn't have sigma-aldrich, so how would one go about synthesizing basic solvents and basic reagents from scratch?

Let us Brainstorm /sci/!
9 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

you look up thing-you-want in lange's handbook, and then synthesize it.

there are these huge books in libraries on synthesizing 'basic' reagents. mostly in chemical journals from the industrial revolution. very basic stuff, but it took cavemen 6000 years :^) to figure out

for instance preperation of ether is rather 'simple' but it is talked about in an almost alchemical way.
>>
>>8457731
Well, here's the thing. I understand that I can use reference books to look up procedures and such, and I'm sure that once the "lab" got to a certain point, I would have to do that unless I want to reinvent the wheel. However, I often see many of these procedures require other reagents that one would have to either already have or have to buy.

I want to know how it's possible to start from a certain place, like say, dig up some dirt in the back yard and isolate stuff, and go from there,...

To go off your example, the preparation of ether would require ethanol and sulfuric acid.

Ethanol, we could just use basic fermentation to acquire some and separate it by distillation.

How would one make sulfuric acid to do this?
Well, reacting sulfur with oxygen and then carrying out other reactions and such.

Where would one get this sulfur? Could one extract it from the ground? Could they maybe salvage some from car batteries? Etc...
