I've started a DnD 5e group at work, and I'd like to DM.

I've only done some real minor DMing in the past and I'd like some tips on how to keep things running smoothly.

I'm going to run off a module (Princes of the Apocalypse)
6 replies and 2 images submitted. Click here to view.

>>50300395
Read the module first. All the way through, take notes and do what you need to do to make it easy to access for you. Bookmarks, stickies and hand written notes are all great. Even make character sheets for mosnters and npcs if the help you. Or even use apps (I just found fight club 5e and its great for me) to keep track of monster stats.

Talk to your players and find out what their goals for their characters are and try to incorporate them into the campaign.

Allow things to deviate off course from how...

If you use a computer to DM like I do, I would suggest using this site: http://radai.github.io/dnd5tools/

It's is a compendium of items, monsters and spells, makes it very easy to lookup things quickly and prevents you from slowing things down to consult the core books

Overall, just go off the module when you can, improvise when you can't and since you're just starting off, try and improvise it back on course to the module.

First time among friends focus first and foremost on letting them know it's a group effort in having fun.

Don't worry as much about strict rule adherence, if you think you'll have to dive into the books longer than a minute or two just make up a DC or house rule.
>>
>>50299244

Rexal. Just have fun. Go with it even if you feel a bit awkward. Don't worry, the others probably do too. Wait until people finish talking, don't interrupt. Try to leave room for other players to do things, don't hog the stage so to speak. Freshen up before you go. If you eat something messy have a way to clean your hands. And when all else fails just follow general rules of conduct for human interaction same as any other situation.

tomorrow ill be running a game where the players enter a church and have to delve into its 2nd floor, unbeknownst to them this isn't just some clergy hangout but a dungeon intended to keep people from taking the church's valuable relic.

and so the players are trying to steal this valuable relic.

What can i do to make this dungeon enjoyable and not just a meat grinder? are puzzles a good idea? a single puzzle? I've never made a dungeon before.

pic related is not the map I'm using

dungeons puzzles should be like magical fog thqat impeeds all vision except for i dunno the glow of some slik bug a few rooms back.

a hall way full of broken ladders and wooden carved people and animals

mushrooms and fungus and bugs...so the familiars and pets can eat them or stuff

do you have a caster ? make a room that has super echos... sound amplified as to concusion or paralyze movement until the caster cast silence on the partys steps...

make the players feel useful, make it class specific for each one.
>>
What kind of church is it? Is this dungeon's sole purpose to hide this relic? Try to make it seems logical.

Are there any horror RPGs out there similar to Call of Cthulu, but are more focused on real world occultism over Lovecraftian mythos?

No, because Lovecraft ruined everything. It's easy to create Lovecraftian horror games because his creatures are obvious others, allowing a simplistic view of horror that doesn't depend on the psychological aspect of confronting something that seems like you, but is very definitely not at all like you.

The game you are looking for is called Nephilim. It is the same basic system as CoC (BRP/d100).

It uses historical occultism and secret societies to frame a war between the Nephilim, who are basically reincarnating demi-gods, and the occult conspiracies that control the world.

The magic system is very detailed and dependent on rituals, astrological conjunction, and KA, the spirit essence of powerful and otherworldy beings.

Originally published in French it has gone through several editions by way of Chaosium. I don't think it's currently in print...

Make him a mysterious prophet-like character with a penchant for fiery sermons. He propogates the cleansing and renuviating effect fire has as a literal symbol of rebirth through the destruction of the self into something refreshing and new. As such fire serves to reincarnate nature whenever it grows unfertile and corrupt. He combines the powers of fire and druidism into a unified new school of magic that serves to both destroy and heal. If he is not stopped soon his teachings will inevitable change the world.

So, a relatively common trope in capeshit is ludicrous amounts of money being a super power unto itself.

Short of just doing literally exactly what capeshit does (ie just using money to buy magic) does FANTASY allow money to be a superpower? All that really comes to mind is paying enough mercenaries to make a continent quake.

Stories of using fat wods of gold are also welcome.

It's worth keeping in mind that in the Middle Ages, a high quality steel sword would cost as much as an average house. A full suit of steel plate armor would cost even more. A warhorse with barding, even more still.

All in all, a well-equipped knight or nobleman's gear could cost him an amount equivalent to several million dollars today.

Here's an article to help you get started.

You can do literally anything with your cube- only commons, no blue, Mirrodin block, multiplayer, anything at all. If your group doesn't like tokens and counters, you can build a cube to do that. A pauper cube would be the perfect and cheapest way to do that.

Boss alternate forms. The dragon you defeated and knocked down a mountain rolled into a [Cursed Swamp], and now it's a near-mindless maybe undead and very feral version of itself stalking around the muck, dragging its broken wings behind it, stalking as little more than a massive bulwark of shadow through the swamp's thick, shrouding mist cover.

I've pulled that trick out of the hat where a former party member was boom-head shot'ed, left for dead then came back. Turns out he was a clone with a computer for a brain and programmed to believe he was the dead party member, but they didn't figure that out until they were standing over his again head shot corpse.

Our DM is giving us the option of playing up to four characters in a 5e game, but the experience for all characters we play has to be divided among them. My knee jerk reaction is wanting to play four, because it seems like a group of lower-level characters would still be more effective than one big strong guy, but when I think about levels costing four times the XP, I get the jitters. What do you guys think?
7 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

Two characters that complement each other would be best. Or team up with another player and make octuplet sorcerors.
>>
>>50295371

i feel like it will end up similarly to having four times as many players, namely that it takes forever to get anything done. Also, will lead to having conversations with yourself. Seems like a bad idea on your gm's part.
>>
>>50295545

but, and here is the caveat i just thought of. If he plays it as high fatality and you wheedle it down until each player only has one surviving character they play, that could be kinda cool.

My character is an old lady who wanted to be an adventurer when she was younger, but decided to take the "mature" option, and settle down and raise a family. Type this up so that it's easy for people to read, these are clearly your shorthand notes.

Damage is done by removing body skill, then keep stat dice, but body is a keep stat, isn't it? Also, do you mean, if you lose a defwnse roll then you lose a die from your rolling pool? As in, your wounds equals the number of body die you have? Do all attacks deal 1damage then?

All combat actions will involve rolling a half dozen dice, on both sides, then adding up the numbers. This can massively slow...

I really liked the roll against roll aspect of RISUS, keeps the players invested, but if I'm going to have people rolling this many dice I might need to figure out a static defense number.

Body/Mind/Sense are all "bubble stats" (don't have a good name for them yet but I'm going...

Consider moving from an addition system to a 'successes' system like Shadowrun. Instead of keeping a certain amount of dice and adding them together (which will make target dc's hard to calculate. Stop by the homebrew thread and ask them if they can even model that system.) Just increase your dice pool, and count the dice that come up above a certain number as a 'success' this will save a lot of time on addition, since sorting out your four best dice from your pool of 9 and then adding them...

79 KB,
Hello /tg/. On the past few days, I worked on a little project of mine.

http://hexdraft.x10host.com/

The goal is to make a web based alternative to Hexographer and the like.

It's prototype as fuck right now (though you can make some basic things), and I come with a few question.

The first one is, are any of you interested by this kind of thing or am I wasting my time and should stop right this moment?

The second one is, if you're interested, what kind of feature would you like to see? I was planning to add the possibility to change...

I'm interested. My main request would be that it export easily to a jpeg and that the hexes line up more or less with roll20s hexes

Ok, I'll note it.
I think I'll try to make an option to change the hex size.

670 KB,
What would a video game about the early life of Konrad Curze be like?

I'm imagining something like a hybrid of the Arkham series of Batman games, and an open-world survival game.

So sneaking in the shadows dragging people away to eat them for justice?
>>
What was the name of that vidya where you played an Arabian Prince and you had some kind of dagger that could turn back time briefly? Sands of Time? You could parkour around, slash up your enemies and the time thing is a half decent mechanic for Curze's prescience
>>
Something like Dishonored. Only there'd be an emphasis on killing the person as sadistically as possible. Instead of sneaking around, killing the target, then sneaking out. You'd start by sneaking in, then letting the target see you.

After they ran around panicking, you'd follow from the shadows and brutally kill ANYONE who offered him shelter or aid. After a while no one would, so you start injuring him slowly as he ran around in fear and pain. When he's finally at his limit you murder him an a spectacularly gruesome way and display the corpse.

Sup /tg/,

I'm looking for a system I could use to run a game about romance. Or, specifically, finding a husband. It's meant to be a shorter lighthearted game where the PC's are essentially Jane Austen characters trying to get married. There will be NPC men and the PC's will try to attract them in various ways- looks, personality, good family and fortune, etc.

What system would you recommend? I assume there's a lot to be homebrewed and adapted but I'd like to start as close as possible. Honestly anything with a relationship/romance...

Maid RPG sounds perfect for this. Just refluff maids to noble women and omit most of the crazy stuff.
>>
There's a satirical RPG literally made specifically for the thing you're describing. I'll look for it for you after I've eaten supper.

116 KB,
I started a D&D campaign, and my players just squabble and fight all the time. They never back each other up, they don't really try to work together, and they constantly backstab each other. It's like running an episode of It's Always Sunny.

What ways have you found to get players to stop being dicks to each other? I've talked to them about it, but they never actually fix the behaviour.

You kick out the most disruptive players and bring in new people who are less retarded.
>>
>>50285852
You give them an ultimatum. Something they can only accomplish by working together. And not just a combat. Something very time sensitive.
>>

Increase the difficulty, they either suceed together or fall individually.
