Thread starter question: What is Planescape to you, in terms of overall thematics and motifs? Not what any of the books say, but what you personally think it should be.

Discuss Planescape and the Great Wheel here, whether the original AD&D 2e version, the 3.X version, the 4e version (traces of the Great Wheel exist in 4e, down to the baernaloths, the yugoloths, the Heart of Darkness, Maeldur et Kavurik, Tenebrous, Pelion, and the Last Word all being canon as of Dragon #417), the 5e version, or your own original blend.

I am exceedingly well-lanned on planar...

Do the planes span out in a flat, infinite expanse (or expand for infinity in whatever dimension they default to like Carceri)? Also how does the sun work on Bitopia if it's two layers that are parallel to each other, meaning there can't really be a noon on it?
>>
>>50207272

As far as I am aware, each planar layer spans out to infinity in all directions. Arborea's first layer, for example, will stretch out its verdant fields and forests indefinitely horizontally, and likewise has an infinitely deep underground and an infinitely high sky. (Note that there is very little canonical information on the undergrounds and the skies of each plane, or even how suns, stars, and moons work. They could be a mysteries that many planar scholars are eager to delve into.)

These infinite dimensions, of course, can be cut short by fulfilling the conditions needed to transition into a new layer, voluntarily or otherwise. For example, as page 48 Planes of Conflict: Liber Benevolentiae will tell you, if you help travelers along the path to your destination in Elysium, you will soon reach that site, infinite dimensions be damned. Likewise, if you follow the Labyrinthine Portal explained in page 5 of Planes of Law: Mechanus, you can reach any place in the clockwork nirvana.

Gehenna is a notable exception to this. As mentioned in page 24 of Planes of Conflict: Liber Malevolentiae and page 111 of the 3.0 Manual of the Planes, while the plane's black void is infinite, the fourfold furnaces are finite in size, to the tune of "literally hundreds of thousands of miles across, up, and down." (For reference, Earth's sun has a diameter of 864,575.9 miles.) The books never come out and say it, but I imagine that the Gehennan yugoloths are suffering from an overpopulation crisis and are trying to deport as many native Gehennan larvae and petitioners as possible to clear room for themselves on the slopes.

60 KB,
Just got back from seeing Dr Strange and its put me in a magical mood. Now I want to do some work with Mage: The Awakening. The themes seem appropriate (revealing knew truths, living in a bigger universe than is readily apparent).

My one hesitation is that the fluff of World of Darkness is so heavily bent towards conspiracy theory shit. Any tips for keeping the mystical mystery of MTA but making it more appropriate for big magical adventure shit too?

Is such a thing even possible? Is such a thing even moral?

Mage is probably one of the gamelines where you can ditch the conspiracy shit easiest.
Just ignore it, fuck off whenever they kick up a fuss, and explore the different dimensions and realms that make up the cosmos.

You get Arcane Experiences for investigating mystic shit and advancing your own understanding of the cosmos and the supernal.
Not for dicking around playing politics.
>>
>>50257362
honestly didnt mind that stuff too much. i wish theyd done someof it in different environments than just cities, and that theyd done a tiny bit more playing with which ways shit could be bent.

the finale was legitimately awesome though. different and clever compared to the rut of pleb action comedy stuff that marvel has been running into the ground.

Have them do profession checks, make sure they're the more expensive trained hireling. On average, you will make more than you spend on them every week.

I once made a level 1 Aristocrat in 3.5e that made several hundred gold a week just by having hordes of trained hirelings doing profession checks.

Of course, this was a theoretical character, never actually played it.

Hey /tg/. New to DnD and super pissed that my wizard was killed off while I wasn't playing. Member of the party decided to kill off the rest in a desperate situation to stay alive. He's a level 4 fighter, on his way to become some kind of demon lord and is now the villain of the campaign.
So now I have to reroll a new level 1 character, and all I care about is killing him. What do you recommend I make?

27 KB,
Just found out about this

What is it?

Lost Worlds is a "combat picture book game" designed and trademarked by Alfred Leonardi.

How is it played?

Play requires two players and at least two "visual combat books", with each player choosing a character (i.e., a book) from those available. At the start of play, each player removes the character sheet for that character from their book and hands the book to his or her opponent. The character sheet lists the various combat actions which the character can take during the battle. The combat book lists the effects of the attacks in tables, and serves as a visual reference for what the other player is doing. Hence, each player views entries in the book from a first-person perspective, seeing only their opponent and not themselves.
There is also a further series of books, of emphatically female fighter-types, under the collective title of Queen's Blade, published from late 2005 by Hobby Japan. With more than 20 books the books were generally new illustrations for existing combat matrices, rather than "new" characters (although at least one doujin has utilised what appears to be a "new matrix"). As of December 2007 a second series, Queen's Gate, was introduced, featuring characters from Japanese visual media, and in October 2008 Hobby Japan announced four further characters in a sub-set of the original series (Queen's Blade Rebellion).

i have all the PDFs, OP. do you guys wanna play?

Okay, here's my idea:

Probably would only work in exclusively text-based game, somewhere on Roll20 or PBP.

Everyone in the party is playing either in his own SETTING or his own SYSTEM altogether. DM describes party members as approximation of their translation into each member's setting/system.

>John is playing a Tech-priest in Dark Heresy.
>He sees Jane as healing-oriented Priest and Mark as Assassin with Bolt Pistol

>Jame is healy Cleric in D&D 5th Edition.
>she sees John as Warlock and Mark as Rogue

>Mark is Lasombra
>He sees Jane as Tzimisce and John as Tremere

All their actions are obviously translated into something else for their version. So do monsters encountered. Kobolds become gretchin. Ork warboss becomes huge Werewolf. Cultists... stay cultists alright.

All they say will be either translated by the DM to others, or omitted/filled in to maintain the picture.

However, each also sees only a part of the picture. The door will be locked tight, but detect magic will show nothing and the tech will be inscrutable to Victorian vampires. But a techpriest will just punch in a code, 'cos he's the only one to see the keypad - and door will open. An artifact may do strange things to both Techpriest and the Vampire, but all it needs a Remove Curse from D&D Cleric.
Etcetera.

Now, every now and then characters will be allowed clues and slight glimpses to what goes on in the worlds of their allies... Requiring them figuring it out NOT ON META LEVEL and working in tandem to unravel the plot.

The whole point is to cause sever mindfuck.

Thoughts? How could this concept be improved?

>>
>>50249026
This seems like a good Idea anon. And since I Always crave for mingfuck ideas it interests me.

But it would be fucking hard to pull off since you'd have to inform your players separately of everything (which would be heavy organization for you and hard for them not to meta)
>>
>>50249224
that's why I was thinking about play-by-post. it's slower and more relaxed as it is, and provided all letters go only to/from the DM, players don't even need to know who other players are
>>
>>50249224
And also, may I add, you would have to choose from a pool of systems and settings which can interact this way without them acting REALLY WEIRD with each other, or else they will realiza the truth fast.

For example if a techpriest starts babling about tech shit to players who see him as a Vampire or Mage it will confuse greatly. You'd have to translate everything they say to each other... And that is, again, pretty convoluted.

Where do Yugioh and Force of Will fall on that ranking?

186 KB,
Every year for Thanksgiving my family get's together for a week so I am looking for some board games to bring this year.

So far I have picked up Paperback and Forbidden Island but I am looking to bring a third. Most of them have never played anything more complicated than Monopoly so I am trying to pick ones that are fairly easy to learn the rules of.

I have been considering picking up Forbidden Dessert since it is in the same vein as FI and the test games of FI I have done here have gone over well. I have also been eyeing up Pandemic and King of Tokyo but...

Dixit is pretty good to play with both family and novices; the rules a re dead simple, and the interpretive aspect is best with people you know well. I would recommend Dixit Odyssey as being the starter box with the best art, but any of them are playable. Runs up to six players.

Coloretto is a pretty good set collecting game with simple rules but interesting interactions that plays with up to five.

If you want another cooperative game instead, Forbidden Desert is good, although chances are it will come...

Catan maybe. It bridges that boarder between interesting Board game and Normie games.

A lot folk I know and most of tg is burned out on it, but that doesn't mean it's not great to introduce to Normal-Folk

Catan also gets vastly more palatable with an expansion. I like Traders and Barbarians for having a bunch of modular scenarios and optional rules that can be included, but both Cities & Knights and Explorers & Pirates are pretty good too. Seafarers on its own is kind pf lackluster, but it has the advantage of being compatible with Cities & Knights, which none of the other expansions are.

>The players are soldiers in the BBEG's armies

Has anyone ever run this type of game without it degenerating into a full Chaotic Stupid fuckfest? Less suicide squad, more pic related.

Played in an evil campaign where we worked for a lich as he tried to end the world and make a new one
Most characters were the "not evil, just greedy" sort, and the chaotic-stupid people didn't stay long, as those players rarely care for story.
On the plus side, it being an evil campaign, there's lots of excuse for just killing a character when their player leaves. Liches cause a lot of turnover.

Right now I'm running a campaign where the players are an assortment of heroes and scoundrels suddenly brought back to life and conscripted into an enigmatic necromancer's army. They're black ops, so they have total free will.

They only plan on serving the BBEG as long as it suits them. Half of them are decent people if you ignore the swath of destruction they've subtlety weaved as part of their orders. They've even helped some towns with real issues if they liked the particular NPC asking.

Only one character is chaotic stupid but they've...

My current campaign began with the PCs as low level enforcers of the villain.

They wondered why the hell everyone was telling them to not do shit, worked out whatever they were being ordered to do was bad, tried to stand up to him, got curbstomped and then the remaining 3/4 of the campaign was trying to stop his lieutenants and getting strong enough to kick his ass.

It has been immensely fun. They didn't even know his endgame for most of the campaign but did know two things:

1) Everyone is saying this shit is real bad and when we asked awkward questions...

Are there any good time travel related RPGs?

Or any systems that treat time travel good?

Also, awesome time travel /tg/ stories.

Pic related is the most famous/notorious game about time travel. It's janky in places but it has a lot of interesting ideas and it's worth reading for trying to do time travel stuff in other systems.

There's also an upcoming boardgame, Anachrony, which is changing up the usual economic eurogame formula by letting you borrow resources from your own future, although if you create a paradox by not sending the resource back you get major penalties.

In terms of time travel stories, there's an ongoing one in a game I'm in at the moment, but it's...

Off the top of my head:
Continuum and its sister-game, Narcissist(?)
Time and Temp
Doctor Who Adventures in Time and Space
TimeWatch

Continuum has got a rep for being indepth about timetravel mechanics, but may not allow too many shenanigans.
TimeWatch has a spectrum from silly to strict, based on the campaign type, and is generally more forgiving of paradox, again depending on the campaign toolset.

You don't.

No one actually knows how time travels works, yet everyone thinks they do.

Some people think that if you loop back, you know how the future is going to pan out because you were just there.

Some people think that you can change the future by going into the past.

Some people watch doctor who.

Some people don't realise they're in a time paradox situation when they are.

So many different and conflicting opinions about something no one understands

Time travel is a fucking disaster always.
