How do your attempts at running open-world freeform games go?

In my experience players will stand around doing nothing if not given explicit direction.

>>
How you set up the game is very important.

Generally, I like to go through each characters backstory with the player in person, talking about various elements, how they could link to the world and so on. I build my web of plot hooks from the details the players themselves gave me for their characters, as well as weaving them together with one anothers in ways they won't expect.

Done right, it doesn't matter what they do or where they go, because they'll always run into something interesting to explore and follow and that'll lead other places etc etc.
>>
I go with the living world approach and have stuff happening in the background while they explore and poke stuff with sticks.

Best moment was when they were looking in a cave for treasure, decided to block the entrance so nobody could get it first and when they finally got out rich, the city was captured by an invading army's blitzkrieg, so everyone in the streets was orky in appearance and would rather buy iron instaed of gold.

Have your players ever overthrown a tyranical goverment so they can sell ancient treasure? I think not, good sir!

>In my experience players will stand around doing nothing if not given explicit direction.
I have that same problem a lot. I love playing in sandbox games, so I've tried running them several times, but they always fail. Partly it's standing around. I always relate it back to something the Penny Arcade guy said years ago about GTA, that when faced with infinite possibilities, he found it paralyzing, and just ended up sitting in the car listening to the radio. My players have that problem a lot. I've discussed it with them endlessly over the years, but they don't seem capable of changing.

The other issue I run into a lot in sandbox games is greed. The player greed seems to run rampant, to the point that it destroys the game in some cases. When they have an established superior, they are very comfortable following orders with no promise of reward. But when I leave them on their own and let them pick and choose assignments, they are never satisfied with how much money they're being offered. They have literally said things like, "we're saving up for X, which costs half a million, so 100,000 nuyen is a waste of time", or "if they won't pay up front, they might just betray us, so we shouldn't do it".

I have actually had two different sandbox games fall apart entirely because my players refused numerous consecutive missions and quest lines on the grounds that they were too risky or not profitable enough, while at the same time having no ideas whatsoever for what to do on their own. At the end of those games, they would all say, "oh it was really fun, it's too bad it ended so quick". When I ended it because they wouldn't do fucking ANYTHING.

It can be discouraging.

After a long day, you return to your domicile to rest and recuperate. But taped on the door is an envelope. You open it, and a ticket falls out!

Also inside is a letter and a cheap map like you'd find at a theme park. The letter reads:

Congratulations! Due to your interest and passion for tabletop gaming, you have been selected to get a sneak peek at the newest theme park sensation gripping the nation- /tg/ Land!

What lands would the park be divided into? Rides? Shows? Attraction? Food?

Well it depends on the system, but assuming you mean dnd i would maximize Charisma. Be good at negotiations and get Bitches. Realistically in our society Charisma would go farther than strength dex or con. Int and Wis could certainly be argued for, but i feel like in short term Charisma is best.

Are we using the real world as our setting? Because if so...

>dump STR
>dump DEX
>dump CON
>have decent INT/WIS
>max CHA

Let's face it, real power in the modern world is convincing people that you are the smartest motherfucker in the room and that they want to do what you want them to do. Int/wis are there for when you need to back it up. You can hire people for anything that requires any sort of physical prowess.

Maybe, first figure out a good reason for why it should happen in an RPG. I can't think of any.

It's easy enough to say how some sword was made and used in some kind of epic way but what about guns?

What sort of legendary gunsmiths are out there? What circumstance cemented this particular weapon or model into fame/infamy? What do people think when they see you walking with a limp from the weight of your heat?
52 replies and 21 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>50241596
Prior to the World Wars, there was an enormous technological disparity between the kind of guns that a rich noble could commission from a master craftsman and what the average person had. Privately owned weapons were centuries ahead of even military gear.

Imagine someone in the 1500s turning up with this breech-loader firing brass cartridge rounds when you have an ordinary muzzle loading gun. He's literally got a weapon three centuries ahead of its time, firing ten shots for every one you can fire.
>>
>>50241596
You can use the same explanations most fantasy weapons do. They make about as much sense for firearms as for swords.

Depends. If you do this in a VtM game, it's more of "what the fuck is wrong with you asshole?" but in D&D you might need some buildup instead of just going "poof! a dragon! have fun now poofters!"

Only as boring as you make it.

Part of it is not giving any context for your game's violence, just slapping enemies down on the battle-mat and expecting fun to happen.

Your current game's setting has come to the attention of Emperor Dornkirk, of the Zaibach Empire. To complete his Fate Alteration Engine, his visions tell him that something in your setting is required.

The armies of Zaibach are great and use fantastical machines. Hundreds of floating forces carry its troops to where they need to be, and the armies of footsoldiers are aided by legions of Guymelefs. Towering metal warriors piloted by skilled knights, Zaibach Guymelefs can transform into a flight mode for travel, used liquid metal weapons that they can fire as retractable spears across dozens of meters or shape into any melee weapon they need, can spew flame in great gouts, and elite Zaibach Guymelefs can even render themselves completely invisible, and even attack while doing so.

But most dangerous of all are the destiny science machines operated by Dornkirk himself. Zaibach machines don't just allow the emperor to see the future, but to alter the fabric of destiny itself. Its an imperfect process, but the Destiny Prognostication Engine lets him see the future with great accuracy, only thwarted by the actions of others that can do the same. An example of his power, and its current limits, are his Enhanced Luck Soldiers. They died from the treatments after only a couple of battles, but during those fights they were invulnerable. Any warrior that raised a weapon against them suffered immediate misfortune, their weapons breaking or jamming such they they were rendered harmless just by being too close to the Enhanced Luck Soldiers and all of their skill failing them.

The last such people to possess this power could even will new worlds into being from nothing, though they eventually destroyed themselves by using the power carelessly.

What can your party do to stop such an enemy? And what is it in your setting that he is probably there for?

If you can handle the setting (you really don't need much) you can do it with Savage Worlds.

"Mutants & Masterminds, or M&M for short, is an adventure roleplaying game in which you, the players, take on the roles of fictional superheroes having thrilling adventures in an imaginary world. One player, the Gamemaster, takes on the job of creating that world and the stories for the other players to take part in. The 3e core book recommends the GM make secret rolls where appropriate to determine what the PCs do and don't pick up on.

I've never done secret rolls against character stats before, only to determine background events that may or may not end up effecting the party. With these sorts of rolls it was relatively easy to disguise what I was doing because the timing of the rolls gave few to no clues to the players what I was doing secret rolls for.

But when you are rolling against PC stats...

As someone who's played it extensively... the short answer is that the ideas are good but the rules get in the way more than they help. Be prepared to basically bend the rules or freeform alot.

Biggest criticisms (keep in mind I'm judging the second most recent version because the actual most recent one is still incomplete):

-Overcharge builds up wayyyy too fast. To the point where you won't want to use alot of your coolest abilities due to the overcharge cost.

-Mutations. See above. Fuck mutations. Fuck having your character potentially ruined forever because you got too much ovcercharge. Some of the stuff on the mutation table will seriously change the entire "element" of your power and ruin your character concepts.

-Poor/no separation of combat and non-combat stats. Basically you have to min-max your character's personality traits to have good combat stats because.

-Class balance sucks. Basically Priestess (support) is best at absolutely everything. Knights (tanks) are useless. And Sorceressses (offense) are overcharge generators. Powers follow the same trend, with some being INCREDIBLY useful, but being weighed against powers that are absolutely useless (every movement ability in the game).

All of these are manageable with GM fiat, and the system works fine outside of this... but that doesn't really excuse these big issues unless you're super into the idea of playing a magical girl game and don't want to learn GURPS or some other system.
>>
>>50183662
>>50183568

I'd add onto this:

Magical Burst is designed for a very, VERY specific sort of game. I wouldn't use it for 99% of Magical Girl games, let alone generally weeb games.

It's like AdEva in that way. It's designed to play one specific sort of game (And that game might not actually line up with how the genre goes)

Will we get a book on the Martain civil war or not?
>>
>>50247486
Well there has been word that FW does want to make Dark Mechboys models, so it's hard to imagine they wont.

It will be like the ultimate exclusive book, with only people rich enough to buy mechanicum able to play the campaign.
>>
>>50247486
Maybe once we get more Dark Mechanicum stuff.

Then again, it's possible we won't see any Mars action until the time it's reclaimed from the traitors in the aftermath of the Heresy.

Could human civilization survive at its current level of sophistication (I.e, easy worldwide communications, general spread of liberal, democratic ideas, etc) if there was to be a sudden population drop of about 90%?

Assume population drop is even worldwide (no country is hit harder than any other) and that reason for drop is a quick killing plague that disappears after infecting and killing the 90% of humanity vulnerable to it.

Society would no longer exist as we know it. Our current capability to produce the resources that we do is based off of a large world-wide work force that distributes these resources via trade. Some countries harvest more basic resources and sell these to countries with more sophisticated means of production that then use those resources to make a variety of products. With a 90% drop in world-wide population, most of the means of harvesting base resources as well as producing more useful goods would practically disappear at once. Worst-case scenario, the remaining 10% fight...

I...what kind of question is it? Of course not. You'd be lucky if humanity survives at all.

What would happen if the imperium found a world that was 100% populated by blanks/pariahs? I know it's super rare for even one to be found in a hive world but what if it was reversed on said hypothetical world? What I think is the imperium would try and make an imperial guard regiment out've it for the soul purpose of fighting eldar/chaos.

well, they'd need a Navigator to get there and that would probably kill or drive any Navigator insane simply through trying to look at it with their Warp eye, let alone trying to go towards it

so nothing i guess

In the spirit of the thread topic, I'll admit that most of my decks use huge commanders as combat wrecking balls. Nothing gives me more joy than resolving a Chandra's Ignition on Kresh and one-shotting someone, or slipping a 30/30 Karlov through after exiling their blockers.
