Yes, I had the same experience.
We have gotten old. Our brains cannot absorb vast amounts of trivia like a sponge anymore.
It becomes difficulty to learn new stuff and worse, you just don't want to do it anymore.
Work, family, chores, errands, news, retraining, all that shit fills up your brain, your time and drains your energy and money.

We are not young anymore.

If a character handicaps themselves in some way (weighted clothes, training weapon, etc.), should they gain more experience from the battle?

>>50108118
No.

You get experience for resolving situations, not playing hard mode. That's just shit for /v/ faggots.

If you manage to save yourself with intelligent application of jury-rigged tools you get more, but all you get for going into that is an upraised eyebrow and mayyyybe a good story.
>>
>>50108118
I don't think so, but I do believe in allowing players to "choose" their difficulty in other ways:

-Players may go into the dungeon with less equipment and supplies (especially armor which is quite heavy), but can move faster carry out more loot.

-Players may recruit NPCs to help in the dungeon, so that fights will be easier and they can help carry loot, but those NPCs themselves require shares of XP and treasure (as if they were each half a party member). Dungeons are deathtraps, so without that level of compensation, no NPC, not even a mercenary will even entertain the notion of following a PC into a dungeon.

-The further out from civilization you wish to go for treasure, the more intense your logistical challenges will be, but the rewards will be greater too... if you succeed. You will be more likely to get lost, monsters will be stronger further out, various specialists will be needed (such as a navigator, armorer, and so on), you will need mercenaries to protect the inevitable camp near the dungeon, you will need beasts of burden to haul out your treasure, and so on.

-Within dungeons, players may descend to a dungeon-level far beyond their abilities if they choose. This brings the chance to see greater treasures, but the monsters they see may be far more dangerous than the PCs can handle.
>>
>>50108118
Depends on the level of the handicap.
Using a Blindfold? You bet your stupid ass.
Weighted clothes? It'd better be cripplingly heavy.

Also depends on the system.
Some do it better than others.

I come today with two questions.

First, I want to include ratfolk in my setting- but with a few caveats. I don't want them to be unclean monsters, I want them to be different from other ratfolk or beast races, and I do NOT want them to be oversexualized or so special and perfect and oppressed by others just because they're different.

How do I make them tolerable?

Secondly, I want to say something that I've wanted to say for a long time. Too many beastmen and beastfolk threads have been started in the name of fap and ended with a slew of "no,...

The best advice I can give you is "they are already integrated into normal society", treat them as mundane. Give them some vague origin story like they were humans that mutated thousands of years ago due to the blood of some rat-god spilling on them, then they bred and found their children all came to be the same. After generations... rat-kin were just kind of things that existed and nobody really thought too hard about it any more once the original generation of human-turned-rat died out.

So they just exist.

As for your latter question... there is no...

>>
>>50105316
Just show them at face value? 'They exist, it's a thing, deal with it yo' sort of thing. You could go into the cultural nuances and how they fit into society as a whole, but only if prompted to do so. No better way to make your players think you are injecting your obsessions into a game than being too eager about them and using any excuse to talk about them. As long as they aren't the only other race, it should work out fine.

As for your latter question, you're an idiot. /tg/ gonna...

D&D Love is the default status of this board. It's not really a topic that musters much conversation.

Overall, the major split between Arneson and Gygax is that Arneson's major roots were in a world building game, while Gygax was more war game oriented. Of course, it's not such a clear split, with Gygax's love for fantasy literature to not be undervalued nor Arneson's ability to devise mechanics (he's actually the one responsible for making the game around the d20, since he found the strange die in a store and was determined to use it),...

well, this board is ideal for getting an executive brief. what parts of the system did arneson contribute? who invented hitpoints? levels? loot drops? these mechanics have been shaping games (boardgames, vidyas, P&P) ever since.

How does /tg/ do when it plays any RPG? I don't mean tabletop wargames like 40k, Infinity or Malifaux, but games like DnD (of any flavour), GURPS, Savage Lands, or the like.

A dry-erase mat with tokens and dice? Mini's with a 2-D tile board? Card stock buildings? Intimidatingly expensive 3-D boards like pic related?

Or maybe /tg/ goes old school with marching order and no board at all.

What does your playgroup do, /tg/?

I once did a dungeon with one room where there were a set of tiles with symbols on them covering the floor. When placed on a tile, depending on the symbol, whatever is placed on that tile will be shunted one tile in a particular direction- and triggers that tile's shove. If two adjacent tiles have opposing directions, you're treated as standing still if one shoves you into the other. Up to 12 tiles can activate on a particular character in a round, meaning most humans would have to Dash to 'stand still'...

Goofy works for short adventures. It might be hard to sustain for a long mega-dungeon campaign, as players will feel little connection to the wackiness.

On the other hand, a totally serious mega-dungeon might get tedious after a while without a very compelling plot.

I'd alternate it.

Adventurers are rootless folk who ignore the natural social hierarchy.
Children might look up to them with starry eyes, but your average peasant sees them as dangerous, a nuisance, and all around troublemakers.
Until they save the village from a dragon, of course.
>>
>>50100829
Basically this.
The average peasant will be bound to his land all his life, never ever getting as far as to see the neighboring village over on the other side of the forest.
Self-proclaimed 'Heroes' who wander from place to place upset the order of things, and they are probably looking to fuck your daughter and steal your money too. Your kids will get weird ideas of 'personal freedom' and 'choice in life' if you let them alone with such hooligans, better just get them to take...

They are going to scorn him, avoid him, call him names and maybe even try to attack him if he gets to close to their homes. But he won't give a shit, because he is on a mission and he will do it, whatever the cost.

Updated template for Campaign Games.

Basically this gets groups of players together, similar to D&D settings. The ending results of the game are recorded (Winner, what happened, etc etc), then documented on a Timeline. Each new game progresses the timeline by 100 years.

Bill, killing your players isn't GMing, it's serial murder. Please drop the bottle of lotion and turn yourself in to the police, you will never be a real woman.

>>50099883
The GM's job is to be a host of a game that is of mutual interest.

>the GM's job

B-but I'm a data analyst, not a murderer!

I'm thinking of starting my fantasy campaign with the players having no stats. A mystery start, with the PCs emerging as blank slates emerging from a magical event (or coccoons, or something) with a body form but no immediate knowledge, past history or items. They would choose a body form (race) and then we start playing to see what happens, exploring the somewhat surreal fantasy world with its strange contradictions and bizarre inhabitants.

They pick up skills as the PCs travel through the world (and the player expresses an interest in being capable in something)...

That reminds me a bit of noumenon in theme

Oh? Don't know it. Does it have a setting or just rules?

Both, basically everyone wakes up as nameless insect people called husks from a caccoon with no memory and explore a surreal world.

Come one come all! For here comes the Story of Puss in Boots, hero of the Tales' Realms!

I know, I know, you guys don't (all) like LARP, but hey, who knows! You might like my stories. Please, give me a chance.

First, let me introduce miawself. I was Puss in Boots, a Tale as you might have guessed. My skills were cuteness (which allowed me to convince guards to let me off with a warning), dual wieilding, stun, lockpick, literacy, immunity to alcohol and most importantly, being hella rich from all the money I'd stolen all over the city while at the...

tells us your stories in a chronological order, as that would make it easier to understand and easier to read.
>>
>>50099610
I'd go with that, but as you might guess, everything kinda kept happening at the same time, so I'll try to organize it in an order that makes sense.

First, the setting was as follows: the Realm of Riverstar (Which is my translation for "Ondétoile") was a peaceful mearchant Realm between the various Tales' worlds such as Agrabbah, the Fairies Forests, Wonderland, Dreamland, and the Badlands where evil Tales were banished. All was fine until the Tales all suddenly fell asleep, and woke...

My sources told me that the Dahem and Eryo's (offscreen) forces had gotten weaker as of late, and that first bit of intel gave me the court's ear. Just like the French after WWII, we acted as if we never lost, and strategically placed our balls on the table. The Eryos kinda wanted to smite our faces, which they could have done since us tales are mostly jacks of all trades, and the Fairies were few in number and mostly twiggy magic user, but I already had made friends with the Dahem matriarchs, which meant their weak alliance with the Eryos became a non-aggression pact, and that if the Eryo broke the truce, Dahems would help us instead. As dumb as the pointy-ears were, they could do basic math, and math say they'd lose, so we got our independance because I managed to have the Dahem believe I knew everything there was to know and would give them good prices on intel.
Which they fucking bought.

Rumor tables for each region, perhaps 12 rumors so you can roll 1d12 on it. Half are accurate, half are false. NPCs typically believe one (or sometimes two) randomly selected rumors from the table, and regardless of the rumor's accuracy will repeat it to the PCs if the NPC wants to help them.

So it goes like
>PC: Hey NPC, I do request and beseech thee, tell me of some quest or adventure upon which I might test my bravery. Especially these beastman attacks which seem to be the main storyline.
>[roll for NPC disposition -> good enough]
>[roll for rumors -> (false) elf wizard-lord plots against the empire]
>NPC: It is whispered that the beastmen are minions of an elven wizard-lord, whose loved ones died in the chaos while the empire conquered this region
>PC: Great! I will now attempt to predict the plot based on this faulty info I got from a random drunk in a bar! Time to waste all my money giving my weapon a +1 against elves!

Depends entirely on how your legal system defines 'person' or 'people'.

Tell me about Gelt. Why does he wear the mask?
>>
>>50097719
1) he's ugly
2) he's secretly an orc
3) he's secretly an elf
4) he's a sigmarine from the future
5) he's secretly Vlad von Carstein
7) he's a suit of animated armour
8) he scarred his face in a magical accident, like rulebook claims

pick one
>>
>>50097784

9) He's wondering why you would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.

90 KB,
Hey guys I need new non-combat encounters for my game to balance the combat encounters.
So fellow DMs what did you come up with so far ?

Also my setting is close to early middle ages europe with folklore monsters found in forests etc.

Mythologically-violent storm. The hurricane to end all hurricanes. Violent winds threaten to blow characters off their feet and rushing torrents of water threaten to carry them away. Trees are toppled and smaller ones are ripped up by their roots. Branches and debris become projectiles.

The PCs may end up having to lash themselves to sturdy trees, etc. to anchor themselves. They may have to grab onto floating debris to keep themselves from drowning in the flash flood that accompanies the torrential rain. Maybe...
