Preference is for Burning Wheel's system, which has a fair bit of complexity. Highlights are the necessity for the winner to include compromises if they've taken a fair bit of "damage" in the argument, and the explicitly stated right to throw your hands up in the air and try to stab your opponent in the throat if you think it isn't going well. Downsides are the need to script your actions three steps in advance, which my players and I found to be arbitrary.

FATE has a meh system....

The landing door crashed down with the sigh of metal that had been left in dis repair for too long, to my own surprise no fire met us, this caught most of first section off guard as they charged out furiously, bayonets raised. Their lasguns zapping a few shots out into the forest before us. They got no further than say about thirty paces before they slowed to a jog, and then a walk. I’ll admit I was surprised too.

I made my way out of the dropship as best I could, lowering my head as I stepped out into the open air. This was a lush world, its faint Violet sky and silvery...

Hi /tg/
I'm gonna have my first real-life DM session soon, ran a few games over roll20 before. Got a couple of practical questions left.
First off, do you have a way of doing fog of war for undiscovered rooms? You use tiles for your maps, or maybe something else?
Do you show images to your players for new characters/environments/setting the mood? How?
Lastly, you have some good environment art? Looking for somewhat darker/moodier small villages, and underground caves/temples/ruins.
Thanks in advance!

Haven't played on actual tabletop for some years now, but the way I did it was to have different room types prepared that I would put on the board as the players would be able to take a peek inside or open the door.

Now images you should use, as they help a lot, in whatever computer screen you have near, pehaps some ready pictures if you're really old school about it. I would also recommend coupling them with music and sound effects. Do not forget to make sure to describe the scene in full, make sure that the scenery change is conveyed properly.

Dumping art now.

I got back to writing my novel. In the past I wrote several full length manuscripts, but as I have matured and grown from a happy college student into a depressed adult my writing has matured. Reading more is helping me get back to it I think, after years of being completely unable to write.

The new story feels good, at least at the moment, but not complex enough. I will likely have to go back once I have everyone written in a more substantial manner. However this feeling is likely fueled by the fact I am currently waste deep in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series,...

It's dark heresy taken to a logical extreme- representing a large cell of acolytes and their nigh impossible quest to maintain control and sustain imperial loyalty in the face of human nature. On a game level, it's Dark Heresy with some gamified elements added meant for a larger group and several different DMs.

>Okay, but is this a multi-group campaign?
Kind of. It's less a multi-group and more one big group with the capacity to split up, because we have multiple available DMs. Seems like a small difference, but having played both it is rather a stark difference.
>I heard multi-group/large group games suck. /TG/ told me so!
I have played in a multi-group game before- and it was plagued with shenanigans. But i've always liked the idea, so we tried to brainstorm ways to fix the issues we had encountered previously. What we decided was that if we standardized experience rates, how loot is found/obtained, and mission difficulties, we could probably provide a more level experience for everyone. So we made a massive amount of random roll tables for everything from encounters, to unexpected turns of events, to modifiers identifying how likely it was the enemy knew what you were up to.
>Okay, i'm at the very least curious. What time are you playing at? How many slots are left?
So we dont actually have a player cap, or a specific timezone, and here is why- my reasoning is that provided enough people were willing to DM, as long as we could keep everyone on a relatively consistent page, that the odds of us getting an absurdly high amount of players would be low enough to not have to sweat a cap. On the issue of timezones, since there are multiple different DMs, you could have different games running at different times in the weekend- thus able to accomodate people according to their schedules- As long as it was sometime on the weekend.
>>
>What If I cannot consistently make it on the weekends?
No problem! Not everyone is always 100% free, but since this game is just a bunch of interconnected one-shots anyhow, it seemed counterproductive to make it a weekly attendance sort of deal. We came up with a couple of actions that people who were missing during a week could do back at the base- that way, you wouldn't run the risk of falling behind.
>If I could just basically idle, why would I ever do a mission?
Well, I mean, technically you could never do a mission, and just contribute entirely to the game in out of mission roleplay and base actions. It doesn't really hurt anyone else so whatever floats your rubber duck I suppose.
>So wait, what if I want to DM as well? Is that okay?
Absolutely! Infact, it's rather encouraged. Since the more people we have DMing the more people can play simultaneously. We have a bunch of aids and tables to help you if your unsure and to keep things balanced- as well as randomized because part of the schtick is that whoever is DMing is having their PC stay back in base and basically act as an Ops Commander (which is part of the reason for so many random roll tables). In doing so, their character will earn a small reward on top of the mission reward for having run the game.
>>
>Alright, I guess im down. When will we start?
I encourage you to hop in the discord right now and do chargen if you can (if you don't know how i'd be happy to assist whenever I'm around, usually after work) But we won't start until the end of November. Why so late? While it's convenient so as to give us a period to organize, it's also because I personally will be preoccupied with work for the next three weeks- not so much that I can't do some things like chargen or planning, but enough that I wouldn't...

Is there a realistic post-apocalyptic role-playing game?

No mutants, no zombies and no Mad Max shenanigans, just horrifying societal collapse, depopulation, famine, dictatorial emergency governments, etc.

Well, the only weird thing built into Apocalypse World is "the world's psychic maelstrom" which you can downplay as intuition or madness a la Mad Max's hallucinations.
Doing a "realistic" game would then just require careful playbook selection. (No Brainers, no Space Marine Mammals, etc)

Every item has a weight, just keep track of how much shit they're carrying and enforce the encumberment rules. As for throwing off their expectations fairly, have whoever is actually doing the evil things make it look like something else. Easy mode is grave robbers taking whole corpses, not because they're necromancers or anything but because they wanna scare off any low level villagers from hunting them down.

Asked in the OSR thread, but hoping to get more feedback.

1. How do I make combat more interesting? Especially the ones that just tend to drag on, miss after miss? Our LotFP hexcrawl last night had only 2 encounters and both seemed to take a fucking eternity. I try to flesh out combat descriptions, but there are only so many things to say after a certain point of missed hits and dodges.

2. How do I encourage my players to stop being huge pussies? It's one thing to be cautious and another entirely to avoid interaction with everything suspicious or interesting...

Also you might want to houserule base AC down to 10 if repeated misses are an issue. I've heard it cited as a solution to this problem in LotFP.

1. Descriptive texture for your players to use in combat. Add terrain, weather, things to jump off, things to duck behind, etc. Play the monsters/mooks like living things that have their own objectives and desires beyond 'kill the good guys'. Use reaction roll tables and moral if you're going osr.

1/2. Having a discussion with your players about playing a game. For 1, it works better if they put effort into the combat too, thinking of plans, manoeuvres and details for you to work with as well. For 2, you can explain the idea behind much OSR is that player characters aren't as precious, they're easy to make and dieing or getting grievously wounded isn't game over. Its a different mentality. Some caution and intelligent dungeon crawling is an important survival skill in osr, but if they wanted to live forever, they'd be dirt farmers, not adventures.

I really like this game, and I just got an updated pdf (https://www.sendspace.com/file/2fuwd4), so thought I'd make a thread.

To be short, it's a game that excels at tactical combat with a gamist bent. It has next to no fluff, so it can be used to cover a wide range of genres, as long as you want fights to happen in there and not sweat the details. Character creation is a breeze, and there's a lot of variety for how short the class section is.

The skill rules are kinda only there to fill space, but they are adequate enough. New material is dripping...

So, apparently, the urge to try and mate with non-human life-forms is one of the oldest fetishistic urges humanity knows. From artwork depicting humans have sex with animals that traces back to the Stone Age, to the countless mythological tales of gods having sex as animals (or with animals) and humans taking magical animals as spouses, voluntarily or otherwise, this is pretty obviously something that humans have been thinking of all over and for a while.

And then we have Dungeons & Dragons, a setting where it's often joked that humanity's "divine blessing",...

Actual halflings are far more appealing... anyway.

Point is, would you ever allow for hybrids like this in your setting, or do you think the only official hybrids should ever be half-elves and half-orcs?

You don't. You now have to develop new tactics around these revolutionary new technologies. The motto of the New World is "Get with the times, or get left behind."

You would need to somehow have bulletproof armor that is super cheap to make. Otherwise a machine gun is too efficient at letting one man mow down many.

Then with everyone being bulletproof, you can go back into lines with spears.

You don't.

Modern infantry ride in armored vehicles and fight in widely dispersed formations in order to not die to artillery and the like

64 KB,
These are the megacorporations in Cyberpunk 2020. How would you update them for the 2010s while still retaining their essential nature? The assumption is we do want to update them and not go full-80s-retro. Which new ones would you add?

Most of these are just parodical references to real-world companies in the 1980s.

Yes, many are. So what would be today's references to multinational companies?

In polish version of all D&D related media Bugbears are not only translated but also renamed, remade into Orclins, half orcs half goblins, orclins

Are there any more examples of translation changes?

No, at least in 3.5 which probably was the most popular D&D edition in Poland, we call them "niedźwieżuki" which (almost) literally translates into "bearbugs".

Exactly what it looks like. An attempt at using GURPS to develop a Dwarf Fortress RPG. Players take on the role of Founding Settlers in a Dwarf Fort, in ab Ultra-High-Mortality setting. Gameplay comes in several tiers:

Tier 1: Settlement. You're a band of dwarves breaking new ground in the wilderness. Plays like a Wilderness Survival RPG, with the goal being to develop stable systems to gather resources and build shelter.

Tier 2: Once the essentials have been taken care of, the game changes to become more of a resource management game, and focus is put on developing industry and building structures, in preparation for the arrival of new Dwarven settlers.

Tier 3: The first settlers arrive, and many of the economic systems the players set up become automated through the NPCs from here the game focuses on managing the well-being and happiness of everyone in the settlement, and getting industry and economy to really develop, as well as defend from invading forces.

Tier 4: Nobles are elected/arrive to the settlement, and Industry really begins to flourish. The fortress begins to expand and become more complex, and the game takes on some political intrigue.

Tier 5:invading Armies, Demons, the true Dwarf Fortress experience. Get ready for some shit to hit the fan.

The GM manages all of this through the use of randomized tables, setting rules, and a good helping of madness. Events in the game may be generated either by the GM's imagination, or what may quite possibly be the most detailed random tables ever.

The Design philosophy of the game is to scale the learning curve of the game in order to make it easy to get into. Rather than front - loading the rules of the game, character creation will be relatively light in terms of what players need to know and do to immediately start playing. After the first tier, character creation will expand, and with it, the number of Rules the player needs to know. The use of templates and suggested features will be used to help streamline all of this, as well as the simplification of many rules.

The overall goal is to make a game that follows a smooth natural progression in such a way that it makes GURPS a more palatable system for newcomers, while at the same time allowing veterans to simply dive right in.

So far we have the outline for a Dwarven racial template, some core mechanics set up for Dwarven Sanity and Alcoholism, and are beginning the outlines of templates for the basic jobs, which will likely be modular in their application.

That sounds interesting, but how would things like traders and migrants be handled?

You know why he died?

He didn't wear a fucking helmet. Helmets save lives guys don't let your warrior fight without one.

Most helmets wouldn't have stopped that wound. Closed helmets aren't the norm.
>>
>>49967688
Look at the right top side of his head. A helmet would help.

Now with THIS wound he would be fucked either way
>>
>>49967619
It looks like it impacted the front of his face. It might have only gone partially into his head.

Not shown: the broken ribs and smashed spine.

Because I see a /hell/ of a lot of -- interesting developments if that piece is any indication.

FFG usually use great artists, and I'm glad L5r will continue to look good. The picture is pretty interesting, too. I just hope they don't advance the setting too far-- the streetlamps are a little worrying.

This is even more ominous. Seems like we really are continuing forward from the ground AEG drove things into rather than rolling back the clock. I'm 100% more concerned about the Spider still being a thing, now.

17 KB,
So one of the player chars is about to get married in a pretty big ceremony after some hellaciously violent recent weeks. What sort of light interstitial adventures do you lot rum when the PCs are just trying to do something relatively normal without the usual drama of secret cults, demons, and prophecies?

Pic related, he's marrying an elf.

Players run into a secret demon cult with a prophecy to ressurrect their master on the day of the wedding. Party must prevent it without the player getting married finding out anything is amiss.
Proceed to run a 1-day parody adventure.
>>
>>49966342
You could just do something light hearted around the ceremony.
>Someone missplaces the rings and the party must scramble to retrieve them before the bride finds out.
>Some of the guests turn out to be mortal enemies and must be kept away from each other at all cost or they may ruin the whole event.
>The groom loses the vows he had written down and must imrpovise them on the spot in the middle of the ceremony.

>the dwarf and elf delegations won't stop arguing over literally everything
