D&D 4e General

Let's talk some 4e, /tg/.

How do you make the game feel less like an MMO on tabletop?
How do you make all classes stop playing exactly the same way?
How do you stop making fighters feel like reskinned wizards casting fighter spells?
How do you include rules for roleplaying instead of the game's rules being 100% for combat with nothing for noncombat?
How do you stop people from playing overpowered vampires?
How do you make Str/Con characters less overpowered?

What about some sort of ultra-sawed-off shotgun. Like, the barrel stops pretty much at the end of the shell. I always thought something like that would be cool and might give you something a bit closer to the wide spread pattern that movies and games like to pretend shotguns normally have.

4e is the only edition of d&d that won't give you permanent brain damage, but it's too technical for fresh faces. Try the 13th age. Or find something lighter. Rules tend to get in the way until people get used to them.

D&D 4e is a good bet, IMO. The system is very simple and straightforward, power cards give players clear ways to interact with the world and combat encounters and it has some of the best GMing support of any RPG ever.

You'll want to track down CBloader, the fanpatch for the character builder program that updates the content and ensures it still works, it makes character generation and progression significantly easier.

There are a few small things to keep in mind, basic math fixes, certain bits of content to avoid and such, but overall it's a very...

So, world-building types, here's a question for you. Assuming you don't use premade ones (The Pathfinder Society, etc), do your campaign worlds have organized adventurer groups? Are they dues-collecting? Do they have some special perks? Are they government-controlled?
18 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
I've yet to see it done particularly well at least. I don't think it really makes sense as a particularly large organization though. If some city has a task force that pays out for a certain thing, like a bounty on orc heads or clearing rooms in the nearby massive dungeon or something I think it's fine, but some sort of world spanning organization that gives you a license to have superpowers or whatever is really only suited to some games

There was a short story, a few paragraphs in the Ork codex about how an Ork Warboss tricked some Tau and ambushed them, stole their guns went on a waaagh with all this stolen gear. Ork players smiled at this short story.

Tau players were incandescent with rage, how DARE the Orks win in a small bit of fluff in their own codex, no no no! They never forgot this bit of story telling, they were furious, dozens, hundreds of threads exclaimed it was bullshit, it would never happen, they demanded satisfaction.

So in the Tau codex, Commander 'pssh nothing personal'...

How do you balance a bbeg who's power is literally being able to rewrite history in a way that he's not a push over but also not overpowered? What can happen if he ends up creating "plot holes" in history itself because he wrote something stupid?

He must work backwards. Say he was to kill the current president, he would have to systematically erase everything he had done up to this point, then undo his election victories, and then change history so he is caught in a fatal car accident. History then "catches up".

Also, he cannot do something that would be "impossible". For instance, if he wrote that Osama Bin Laden won the electoral collage, it wouldn't do anything because he is ineligible as a president and would not get anywhere...

Don't do time travel and don't do altering history.

If you really want to and not go into McGuffin/DESTINY then have some arbitrary thing like any changes only take place after sunset, or the bbeg needs the blood of someone who was of the time period she is changing.
>>
>>48851111

I personally think that this just makes the power lame, and while that is one way of making it not overpowered that also means its a lot more work to find out cool and fun ways for the bbeg to use this power without requiring the players to have a lot of setting knowledge.

On a more serious note, if you don't know your players' preferences, you can't play to them.
Run it as is, ask your players to keep an open mind and have them provide feedback after the session. That's all you can do.

Godbound General!

What is Godbound? It's a 3pp Pathfinder class that basically transforms Pathfinder into a brand new game, though still a d20 game.

In Godbound, you play a Godbound. You're a superpowered godling whom no mortal hero can stop, no matter how powerful they are. If you're a level 1 Godbound and the other guy is a level 20 mortal wizard, you'll win because your can fling your divine powers at them and they'll have no chance of resisting. Your only opposition comes from other Godbound.

What kind of Godbound can you play?...

That's why text based games are better than voice
RL games are the best even with those inconvinences, but that's because of social interaction part, and associated things, like rolling physical dice and so on.

But if you play online, text owns voice thanks to improved narrative quality

Bloodhorn

Closely related to Triceratops and Styracosaurus, the bloodhorn is one of the more unusual ceratopsian species: unlike its predominantly herbivorous relatives, it is a carnivore through and through. But this enormous 30-foot-long beast does not content itself with small animals and carrion; instead, it actively hunts other predators, particularly large theropods.

With dull brown alligator-like hide studded with short but sharp bone spikes on its back, powerful forelimbs with enormous razor-sharp claws on the forefeet, a deadly-looking eagle-like beak...

There is a ..bishop? or something that can revive them, it could be a nice way to introduce a new quest and character, and also you can test the ressurection table.
Also they have failed the mission wich they were doing, thats itshelf is a penalization.

When they're revived, "something" hitches a ride and comes back with their soul. This "something" slowly starts to corrupt the player's body and take control of it (especially when they're sleeping or otherwise vulnerable). At first it's just written off as stress or nightmares, but eventually have it culminate with the "something" being exorcised and the player having to beat it in single-combat to truly reclaim sole sovereignty of their body.

Rogue/wizard bets on a little known barbarian (second player) in a tournament because of his ridiculous odds. Feeds him clues using message based on any silent casting or tips he gleans from watching the fights. Basically uses up all his spell slots fucking up the competition discretely. Blackmails half the prize money from the now very injured barbarian for his help.

Why would you pin your players against each other from the very start?
If anything, you should make it clear that they had already been traveling together for a little while and work from there.

I make them pair up beforegame, with brother/brother, ex-soldier and his commander turned equal mercenaries (but the commander still commands and the soldier counters with playful banter about how there's no rank anymore), childhood friends/rivals, ex-cons, lovers, or whatever connection two people might have.

Hey.

Several centuries ago, a human colony ship has landed on a habitable planet. What factors (i.e. equipment failure, mutiny, etc) can contribute to the decline of their society towards a simple decentralized clan-based system? I'm talking full-on loss of scientific and technological knowldedge here.

How will their resulting culture reflect their spacefaring past? For example - what kind of working superstitions they might perpetuate? What will be extremely weird about them, but obvious in retrospect?

For example, one of my ideas involves them suffering from a strange disease. Very rarely, a person goes into shock from physical or emotional trauma, goes into coma, and never wakes up (except for legendary cases). The old wives say that this condition means that his soul went on a journey through the spirit world and got lost.

It is actually a malfunctioning anabiosis genemod.

earthquake shortly after they arrive, lss of written materials, paper, supplies - reduced to a survival situation,, all of the science, math, etc. becomes an oral tradition. Most astronauts don't know about rebuilding a society from scratch (if any) might get lucky and have a geologist with some mining experience.

Issue with the disease thing.

diseases and illnesses are caused by pathogens that have adapted to be infectious to the host animal or plant. The reason why an illness or disease would be lethal is because the illness or disease in question evolved over time to be able to overcome or circumvent our autoimmune response and create symptoms that are harmful to our body but allow for the spread and reproduction of the pathogens.

Any disease or illness inflicted upon a non-native populous will be a result...
