I don't have much experience with d100 systems, but I want to make a game that uses primarily (and hopefully, only) d100.

What are some shortcomings and negative things in d100 systems you could point out for me to avoid when laying out the rules? What are some d100 systems that you feel have done things right for me to learn from them?

Pic unrelated.
12 replies and 3 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>48817016
Do not make a system based on a die.
Think about what you want to make, then choose dice appropriate to your concept.
>>
>>48817016

d100 is best when you really want to portray randomness. It works for CoC, DH, and games like that which aren't focused on a tight game experience and lend themselves to wacky things happening.

If you just like the d100 in general maybe take a look at RuneQuest 6.
>>
>>48817016
The type of dice you pick does not determine anything about the system other than the type of dice it uses.

There is nothing inherently bad, or anything inherently good about using a d100.
Tell us something concrete about the game you want to make.

I'd like to have supernatural beings definitely exist, in the form of more or less powerful spirits and ascended heroes, some of whom are venerated with rituals and songs and such, and some of whom even grant magic to certain devoted followers who seek to follow in their footsteps.

And at the same time, maintain ambiguity about whether one or more "higher" gods which are somehow fundamentally prior to reality as we know it really exist, in the same way that it is uncertain whether or not such higher powers exist in reality.

Is that doable, do you think?

What's the difference between the medieval notion of magic and the early modern notion of magic?

I'm making an early modern setting and noted in a book that the two eras saw magic in entirely different lights.

>Only an obstinate prejudice about this period could blind us to a certain change which comes over the merely literary texts as we pass from the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century. In medieval story there is, in one sense, plenty of “magic”. Merlin does this or that “by his subtilty”, Bercilak resumes his severed...

I can't give you much of a scholarly opinion, but I've read that the renaissance was a surprisingly superstitious time, and a lot of modern occultism was basically rooted in renaissance era LARPing that had very little to do with ancient mystery cults or pagan folk traditions.
>>
>>48815343
It's mostly because there was a shift in the definition of magic. The tradition definition of "magic" way back when was to worship to gain benefits and power from beings that are not YHWH. Good "magic" was basically just "miracles" (or thaumaturgy).

And then folks such as Aleister Crowley came along and just said "Fuck that shit, I'm a wizard!". And started memeing various ancient religious practices, thus developing the early-modern (which in turn developed...

Put up a barn and a shack and start farming the fields.

Build a wooden church then hope more people come to join you. When you've got a community, start collecting donations from pilgrims to build a bigger church and keep building. Sell what you make and invest the profits in church stuff.

3. ask church for the permission and resources to make a monastery or mission.

No idea, most of the wargames I tried had been shit at balance.

Imagine that you have a Spelljammer-like fantasy universe with all kinds of exotic worlds, suns, gas giants, water worlds, and so on. In Spelljammer official material, there is a gigantic sun called Garrash that has floating continents of rock and metal, and Greyhawk's own sun has many lakes of water with water elementals living in them.

From a perspective of "usefulness as adventure sites," do you really need elemental planes in the multiverse if these mortal planets and stars exist?

How is a plane of fire so different from an exotic sun?
How...

You don't need to have a specific plane of [insert element here] I think it would be cooler to have places that have a greater or lesser affinity for certain elements.

For example; a world with fire affinity would be closer to it's sun and be a desert world while undernearth it could have a strong affiliation for shadow (which could/would be consistant across most worlds so your Plane of shadow is linked to all deep underground areas of different planets)
>>
In OD&D the astral plane was bijective with the material plane. The astral plane was mostly empty because space is mostly empty and the "outer planes" were other planets.
>>
>>48813943

>For example; a world with fire affinity would be closer to it's sun and be a desert world

How would this be any different from a world that is simply... close to a sun?

Would all suns, water worlds, and ice worlds not already be fire-, water-, or ice-attuned?

It really isn't, it keeps getting posted here and I just don't get the appeal. It's not like the internet is so starved of 40k fan content that they should have to care about something like this.

Cliched is bad, but that's more your fault then the character portrait. I guess the only things that would make the portrait bad are if it's not a portrait or the image is just low quality. Everything else is the fault of your character. Overall, a character portrait should show the tone, appearance above the shoulders, and some of the clothes of the character.

>>
>>48812799
We've been moving towards a system like this that was less about luck of the dice and more about working a choice-based system. You have your equipment packs, specialization packs, soldier types, etc.

I felt that removing the luck of the draw would help make the playing field feel more moldable and more personalizable.

And adding too many systems you can choose between would muddy the system down more than it already is.

Yes. Greater Daemons pop up and get killed before they destroy a country. Lesser Daemons are killed by a few guys with swords.

In 40k a single Greater Daemon effectively renders the planet lost unless there's Astartes nearby (there are exceptions, of course) and Bloodletters are dangerous in close combat for Space Marines and Eldar, each of the two making non-named elite fighters in fantasy look pretty bad.

Why does the Warcraft setting suck so bad at cosmic horror?

They introduce things like Eldritch entities, faceless ones and starry cults and basically do nothing interesting with them.

None of the Lovecraftian elements ever amounted to more than just window dressing, it was all just a gimmick.

The Old Gods were basically just C-list villains meant to hold you over until the Legion came back.

High magic settings and elder gods don't mix well in my opinion. The Elder Gods and the unknowable are scary when you aren't flinging magic left and right, dabbling in the unknowable and mystical and magical pretty much constantly and unleashing torrents of it at a whim.

The BBEG and his destiny was a blatant clone of Euron Greyjoy if every poorquentyn prediction about The Winds of Winter came true. So, it was sort of basing a character on someone else's character that hasn't actually been written yet, only speculated about by fans.

However the party never met him (they weren't meant to) and the situation was resolved without the party's intervention.

They never caught on because they've only seen the television series and the show fucked Euron up to an insane degree.

I once infuriated a GM by making a Druid done in the style of Johnathan Strange and Mr Norell.

He had all of the druid class abilities and powers. But he didn't act like a dirty treehugger who lived in the woods. He dressed and acted like a old timey british gentleman with an eccentric streak who happened to have the secrets for calling upon the forces of nature by well researched ancient contracts.

He didn't wear metal armor because is was damned uncomfortable and he was no soldier, not to disparage that honorable profession. He didn't wield metal weapons because truth be told they are rather ghastly, aren't they? All that cutting and getting blood everywhere. A gentleman should aspire to a cleaner standard of warfare, given the unique opportunity to pursue such a task. Like sleeping spells, or binding your enemy with vines. Or intimidating them into standing down via an army of spiders. Fascinating creatures, spiders, did you know...

The GM was absolutely livid because he insisted I wasn't playing my druid 'right'. I assured him that everything I was doing was within the bounds of what druids were and were not allowed to do by raw.

So, obviously, he had my character torn apart by werewolves in a town where silver was forbidden because it was deemed unlucky. Which lead to the rest of the party dying soon after, because aside from a couple of potions I was their source of healing.

Ork_Nobs_Charge.jpg

You have terminator ripoffs, xenomorph ripoffs who eat entire planets, hell, and a bunch of BDSM loving elves so in comparison Orks look tame. Hell even Tau are more menacing because of their guns. Remove Orks they are shit.
