Necromancers can't be neutral because necromancy itself is an evil act
>>
>>48793174

They could negotiate a deal after the battle to claim the corpses of the losing side for their own purposes, but that would further infuriate the losing side and probably not sit well with the victors. They could also be mercs who offer their services in exchange for using the dead of both sides to fight for whoever pays them. Or maybe they're just there to clean up after the battle.

Sure they can. They can be neutral to the conflict...

GURPS, it has a lot of options for martials and gritty realism you can enable. Bleeding and infected wounds, for example, can be a serious problem.

If you have the Ritual Path Magic from Monster Hunters and then bar the Ritual Adept advantage, magic is also a game of slow and subtle work. Though that system can take a bit of work to wrap your head around.

Hey /tg/, so I am newish to tabletops. not exactly new since I've played in a few campaigns but I've never really ran more than a session or two myself. My current group are looking to kick off another session on the side and I got put forward to run it. I was thinking of doing something a little different since they've only played DnD and some of them are a bit jaded with fantasy.

So I saw a post about Call of Cthulu the other day saying it was good for newbies and thought it would make for a cool Silent Hill/F.EA.R campaign. I can't find a torrent for the books though so was wondering if anyone could share them?

tl;dr Looking to run a Call of Cthulu campaign. Need the pdf's and character sheets. Also any tips or cool idea's would be greatly appreciated!

I would recommend playing Trail of Cthulhu instead, particularly if you're newer. The main advantage it has over CoC is that the game can't be halted by bad rolls, other than that the two games are mostly identical.

That said for doing Silent Hill or F.E.A.R you might be better off running Dread or maybe 10 Candles

Lamentations is quite good for what it is: a D&D retroclone that focues on weird horror. It's strength is the adventures that came out for it, which are some of the most nasty, horrific ones I've seen for D&D ever.

It's good stuff for jaded 40-year-old grognards who've "seen everything" and it subverts a lot of classic tropes in fantasy gaming.

So my thoughts have recently been on wargames. More specifically, how they tend to be a 1v1 affair, which, if you think about it, tends to not be true for any of the larger scale ones. There's always a bunch of lesser commanders and officers managing individual battles, with a chain of command leading up to the bigger dogs. So I'm wondering, has that ever been done?

I'm thinking like a tournament format, where there's two teams, each with X commanders and one commander-in-chief. Individual battles bringing Victory points, officers being able to ask...

Just to correct myself because I'm an idiot and can't express my thoughts for shit, when I said "tends not to be true for the larger scale ones ", that was supposed to apply to real battles/wars. And the "has this been done" bit is supposed to mean "has anyone done this tournament format type thing before?".

Looking for medieval style tabletop rpgs that don't have much if any magic. It doesn't have to be historical or anything, but I want something that doesn't rely on having wizards running around.

Hoping to have something that support both low level soldier/explorer adventuring, AND eventual realm management. In before "just strip the magic out of ACKS".

Monsters like goblins and whatnot are optional. Elves are right out.

Maybe a bit more magical than you're looking for, but try this

http://www.fantasist.net/dragonquest.shtml

It's got a very northern medieval European folklore feel. There is magic, there are elves and dwarves and whatnot, but all the good magic is used in hours long rituals that most people won't have the time and inclination and resources for.

If you're an ultra, ultra powerful mage, you can finally cast a firebolt spell that's about as powerful as a longbow's...

Do you guys ever made your players play already existing characters from a fiction?
Me (the DM) and my group were talking the other day about playing as the Fellowship of the Rings in an alternative scenario where Boromir survived the Amon Hen battle. We were talking about playing Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli as they travel together to Rohan.

So basically this thread has two points:

I'm looking to include a smaller chess challenge as part of a roleplaying adventure, that is to be played with real pieces.

In order to have this as a fun gimmick and not a complete speedbump for those not interested in chess, I was thinking of not playing an entire game but instead starting out in the middle of one.

What are some good, beginner, chess puzzles that can still be played out?

Perhaps the most obvious parallel to the conscious/unconscious split in D&D is the overworld-Underdark split. The underground world directly represents death and the unconscious. Many ancient civilizations believed the underworld, the land of the dead, the afterlife, could be physically entered by descending a staircase into the depths of the earth.

I want to run a game set in the Gaiman-verse. Primarily the American Gods parts, though I'm not adverse to dipping into London Below or the Hemstock's domain. Death and company may also make an appearance.

Do you think it would be more fun to have my players be humans who have just become aware of the world of old and new gods, or be newly formed new gods? Any ideas for interesting NPCs?

I don't have a system in mind either, is there one that would be suitable?

Unknown Armies or World of Darkness both seem to fit thematically, although your system choice really depends on what you want the game to focus on, we know the setting but what would be the subject?

Scion. The Game even sites American Gods as a driving inspiration, right down to the Norse-wank.

Additionally, the game is designed to allow for players to start as humans newly awakened to the realm of the Gods and go all the way up to Titan fuckery.

You may be able to find some inspiration from historical records, more specifically the Russian Revolution.

Aside from that, you will need two things to happen before the scenario you described will be ready to be overthrown. You need the rich to lose faith in and stop backing the current government, and you will need to splinter the ruling faction into bickering sub-factions. How you go with that, I don't know offhand, but it's a start.
>>
>>48786724

You need to get popular support from the people so they can give you places to hide and store stuff for your revolution. This will also make you more noticeable to the leaders so be prepared to kick some teeth in.

Find someone(s) within the population to be your proxy(ies) when you are away. Make sure you guys are all cool with each other and know how to git shit done.

Don't be afraid to import people from elsewhere who will help get shit done.

Tho real talk, if the population is still...

So I saw pic at my LGS, I thumbed through it but ultimately decided to get the 5th Bestiary instead. But it got me thinking:

Why not set up a campaign around the idea of the PC's being in a clearly horror-themed setting, with all the atmosphere and trappings of a horror setting, but kept a 'heroic' tone for the adventure itself?

A better way to describe the premise is this:

The world is a typical horror/slasher-type setting with homicidal maniacs and horrible supernatural monsters run rampant and most people are just victims waiting to meet...

To write a villain that is well written and affirm that they are irredeemable or beyond saving is to state the notion that there can be no hope for yourself in your darkest hour.

Are your villains redeemable anon? Worth saving? Or have you abandoned hope?

Depends on what we did last and what the party is feeling.

Right now I'm jonesing for the thug bbeg who is dumb as fuck right up until he outsmarts you and drops you off a cliff.

why must plots have centralized evil villains commanding underlings?
Why can we not have decentralized evil committees that plan and execute their evil separately without the oversight of a central authority?

Because you usually want to have a very definitive "win" condition.

If you have one Big Bad who is Behind It All, you beat him, you have a dramatic moment you can point to and say "we won".

A decentralized glut of evil doesn't really offer that.

Is Privateer Press dying?

I was heavily into Mk2 warmahordes competitively but locally nobody is really playing anymore, even after Mk3 dropped. The only people still playing are the super hardcore guys who go to every convention. Some newbies picked up the new boxes for Jr. Leagues but attendance is dropping off hard. It seems like after the initial burst people realized it was basically the same game so all it really did was alienate the people who were into it to begin with, and all the people who quit Mk2 just kinda dropped off again. Locally it seems everyone wants...

>Warmachine video game

W-was it shit? I'd be surprised if the fanbase wouldn't have supported it.

> the fluff isn't strong enough to make people get into it for its own sake

That's a bummer. I was never into the setting but it sucks to hear that no one else was either.

Ooof that's fucking rough. A good videogame will do a lot to bring people into the world. The fact that they got a shit one...ooof.

/tg/, I've been getting into Jojo pretty hard lately (anime only, for now at least), and I'm joining a 3.5 campaign soon. Obviously, I need to join these two interests.

I'm not incredibly familiar with 3.5, and it's been a while since I've played, but does anybody have any tips on how to make a character that, more or less, is a Stand user in all but name?

Stands are gonna be rough unless your DM lets you fluff shit.

I think there was a class where you had this golem Eidelon thing that you pimped out and cast magic through, but I'm not sure.

It depends on how abstract you want to get. Wizards have familiars and Druids have a starting pet I think.
>>

Oh fuck Familiars could be perfect for those super-power based stands since you can cast through the familiar.

From there it's just picking a bunch of spells that technically-kinda revolve around a theme or are an extension of a particular power..
