Hey /tg/ i was wondering if you guys could help me out.

im in a 5e game and our GM has said all our characters origins are based in certain cities, when it was my turn he told me i was in the kingdom of Seelie, which is apparently the city of necromancy, where the government is a bunch of necromancers and the undead cover the streets as public servants like construction workers.

The GM then told us to bring a description of our city and all about it to him next game. AKA he wants us to make the cities for him, no problem, i love player input.

tl;dr was...

The Kingdom of Seelie used to be nothing but a small fishing village near putrid marshes. A mere stop-by for travelers on their way to places of more beauty and wealth.
Barely a name on the maps, it was the perfect place for a young wannabe necromancer to settle after his master had been killed by adventurers.

As most wielders of the dark arts, the hearth of the young lad was hardly pure evil, seeing his trade as but a tool and his studies a mere path to greatness.
Such outlook usually get twisted over...

Aesthetically, it would be cool to have the undead wear masks of stone to hide themselves from their old loved ones. And it would say something about how were all the same in death.

For the undead who work as public servants, is it volunteered? Punishment? Or mandatory?
>>
>>48725040
After a few winters, the village came to accept the undead gnolls, espacially since those were the ONLY undeads : no villager had been raised, as this had been a sensitive topic from the very start.

Some animals had, though :
Cows and horses which died of illness or age would be brought back once stripped of their meat, their strength now usable without pause until the very bones should be grounded.
Undead cats proved useful in tracking and eliminating the vermin from the swamp and fields, increasing...

That art is quite horrible.

If you were making a town themed around a defunct golem, you'd have it carved into the body or scrap it and build houses out of the parts.

Building on top of it is stupid and inconvenient. Howcome it just sits on top of the ground neatly? Something that heavy would be partially sunk. The bridge over the thumb is particularly pointless, and that river wouldn't still be flowing under the head.
>>
>>48723519
I was thinking the same things. Now I'm wondering how a society would develop and function in the remains of a massive magical/mechanical golem. There's potential.
>>
>>48724101
There's a lot of potential, especially if they restore parts of it to working order but use them in a way that isn't intended, like detaching the drive belts on a limb and replacing them with an elevator, or using the boiler room to heat the city and provide safe running water.

Are there any RPG's which allow you to resolve a whole combat encounter in single difficulty check?

Something we roll the dice and apply modifies to work out the results of the fight the same as you would any other difficulty check.

Bonus points if it's not if it's not a rules like narrative system. Something that still has class balance and situational modifies. Just eliminates the whole round by round thing.

Nothing I've ever heard of does that... sounds a bit boring to me, if you want to cut combat down to a single roll you might as well just homebrew a single roll with modifiers into a pre existing system

I dunno anon, what's the point of this anyway? If the combat matters, turning it into a single roll kind of dumbs it down... and on the flip side, if it doesn't matter, why roll at all?

Or is this just to know if something like this exists and not for a practical use?

For a single check?

I think Don't Rest Your Head, although that's because it is more of a narrative RPG than a typical RPG.

Create it from the bottom up, not top down.

Do not worry about cosmic relevance and instead design a player experience. Whatever it is, it is inscrutable and endlessly powerful. No need to Derleth it up with a hierarchy of the unknowable.

Beginners believe the key is to make it overly powerful. But that is just the implication not the game challenge. The trick to the Mythos is that its creatures aren't evil or malicious. Their threat to mankind is purely coincidental and the end to our world would give them no satisfaction. We're ants to them.

Another crucial element is that the Mythos is no canon. Introducing a Shoggoth does not imply that Cthulhu sleeps at R'lyeh. It just implies that there are terrible things out there that we do not know about. The situation is all that matters, and everything behind the scenes bends to that necessity. The entirety of stories conceived in that context are mere inspiration, never "the truth". There is no absolute certainty. The unreliable narrator is a central trope and ancient lore is only as reliable as rumor.

Good day /tg/. I would like to share an idea of a setting and campaign that has been sitting in my head for a really long time, yet I’ve never been able to narrate it myself for I am not familiar with how DMing in any RPG system works. It seems as if wheel of history has stopped itself in Arkanar, because by Earth history standards, dark medieval times should have been left behind long time ago for an age of Renaissance. But it never happened.
The most powerful Warlord, a leader with distinctly fascist tendencies has declared through the mouth of blabbering Syth that reading and writing is prohibited. Arkanar’s lands are lighted by hundreds of fires and they hunger to be fueled by progress and knowledge, only to leave behind ash, coals and coming darkness. In six years of “Cleansing” Arkanar has been set back by centuries. Now that world is a lump of filth, a place in rapid and horrific decline. Language itself is breaking down, collapsing into grunts and single phrases. What's the most important rule in RPG's?

Everyone should have fun. That's kind of obvious.

And no, the GM is not always right. This way of seeing things lead you to superiority complex GM and bad GM who don't know nearly enough about the game and make shit up 90% of the time

B.

A exists only to serve B. (Because bickering with the GM derails the game and then nobody has fun). B is supreme.

I would like to pick your brilliant minds on something. I'm developing a pirate themed pathfinder campaign, and my solution to the issue of, "how can all the players have full control of the ship and how can I organically have a captain PC selecting one of them to be captain," is to have the PCs start the campaign as adopted children in a port city.

The PCs will all be adopted by a widowed sailor (ex-pirate) who was trying to do some good in his life by raising the PCs and giving them a home. He will pass...

The classic choice is the quest, offer them a lucrative job which will require them to work together, then just hope your players aren't non-roleplaying morons.
>>
>>48720531
Not all characters will accept random job offers, especially dangerous ones. And of course players will take any excuse to hang out in-character but a better GM can tie it all in.

OP what about they all get kidnapped and as they escape whatever prison they're in, they befriend eachother and vow to get to the bottom of the mystery. Or something. Might be too rail-roady.

It's at least partially the player's job to get their character interested in the story. Nobody enjoys a game grinding to a halt while the DM tries to work what the fuck is going to make John's monk stop talking about how all physical reward is ephemeral and accept the damn job so we can play.

It wasn't very coherent at first, but by 2nd Ed you rolled a d10 and then who went first was modified by the type of action you were doing.
Spells, especially potent ones, tended to go last and if the caster was hit then they basically immediately lost the spell in addition to usually being fucked up pretty bad thanks to how frail everyone was back then.

Deathwatch. You can punch humans to death. I think you get an ability where you can double a stat once a day, and can punch to death a hive tyrant, but I'm not so sure.

Also, you fight lesser creatures as a swarm, so there's that 1 VS many thing.

You also get miniatures to use

maybe your NPCs weren't as deep and fascinating as you thought they were

Maybe, I could be shit and the reason every role-playing opportunity turns into memespouting is because the world isn't good enough to warrant taking seriously. Maybe they're just childish. I'm not sure.

As for the NPCs being shit, maybe, but they haven't met them yet. They followed a side quest plot hook and instead of saving a village from a witch they set it on fire. Which is fine, but DMing for people who are bored with anything other than slaughtering innocents gets repetitive.

Hey, /tg/, can I ask a few riddles to test for my table?

>Although I rest among the palms
>and settle at my wrists,
>I've come between a million psalms
>and Kissed many a prince.

Got it? No?

Extra clue: The party sticks their hands into a pit of pins to answer the question. Answering it wrong makes the pins shock them.

My players worked on this one entirely too long before I artificially upped the pace, and when they finally gave up, one said the answer was bullshit. I'm here to make sure it and the others are actually up to muster.

>Though I am laced, I am no shoe,
>a stranger in the brew

I'll post an extra clue to this one later in the thread if someone guesses it and gets it wrong.

>At rest, I set beneath a roof,
>In my own fluids, slick, aloof.
>At play, I ere to share in tales,
>Both myth and mundane truth.

>At work, I jump my ivory fence,
>To taste my prey, to drag it in,
>And see the curtains close again,
>And set the flesh to tooth.

Extra clue later.

Also, let's please avoid the whole 'let them roll INT and move along' thing. It's a perfectly valid method for some, but if we're going that far than I'd rather say "he tells you a riddle, roll INT" than give them an actual riddle.

Int rolls for hints seems fair. A smart character should be able to more easily get on the right line of thinking. You still let the players retain agency that way, of course.

Same as any other romance stuff. It's fine but if your character interaction consists entirely of "I grope the erogenous zone" you're going to get told to fuck off.

No one else wants to sit around while you and your husbando examine each other's tonsils.

What's your favourite piece of munchkinry in Pathfinder?

Mine is probably Magical Lineage + Metamagic Master for Metamagiced spells with a negative level adjustment.

Get logs of famous/important games, put all the moves into a list format where you can cover up all the moves except for one. Say, a piece of paper with a single column listing all the moves and a second piece of paper covering it that you can slide down, revealing the moves one at a time.

Start recreating the game mve by move on a physical board. Before you look at what the next move in the is, look at the board state and think about what you would actually do in that situation. Then look at the...

What about solving more tactics?
www.goproblems.com

Also, you can easily download collections of books to learn progressively about nice structures, relationship between groups, common tactics, etc.
Studying theory is more useful here than in chess, because the interactions between two any stones will be always the same (only changing through the position).

Gunslingers and Gamblers. It's shit for prolonged campaigns, as there is barely any character progression, but for one-offs and shorts it's perfect, simple system over 10 pages and based on d6
