Help wanted.jpg
20 KB,
So, I came back to my hometown for the 4th of July weekend, and caught up with some old friends, including my former tabletop group.

Last night, we got to reminiscing about old campaigns, and I was mentioning to my then-GM how some of the tips he gave me have really helped my own GMing. But then the conversation turned to a particular game we played, with a homebrew system, and I remembered a lot of the early part seemed to be randomly running around fighting monsters of the session and coming back for cash, which he always said (and I tend to agree) is a bad model, which prompted the inevitable question as to why he did it then, and his answer, with a shrug, was

>Well, we were trying Rick's system, remember? I had originally planned it to be just a short meaningless thing, get some system mastery all around, and then we'd move on to a real campaign. But you guys got attached to your characters, so I sewed it into the ideas I was tinkering with at the time.

I mean, it makes sense. Something I'd do if I was GMtesting someone's new system. But I can't help but feel annoyed and betrayed over it, even if overall it was one of the better campaigns I played in, certainly one of the most I've felt vulnerable in.

You were in a campaign that you had fun with and admit is one of the better ones you've played in, and that makes you... angry? Because the GM adjusted his campaign plans since you guys liked your characters?
>>
Take a deep breath, Anon.
This isn't worth getting angry over. You all had a fun campaign from the sounds of it and finding out that it began from a series of one-shot should not diminish that enjoyment. You sound like you and your former GM are in agreement and the situation arose naturally. Being mad at your younger selves is not something that should affect your current selves negatively.

Also, this is why they tell you not to look behind the curtain.

Hey /tg/, I was looking around for systems for running a Legend of Zelda campaign and I couldn't quite settle on anything.

The /tg/ homebrew doesn't seem finished, and I'm not really looking for a D&D/Pathfinder system, so I was hoping someone could suggest something I could work with.

I would like something that could support different races at the very least.

What does a Legend of Zelda game entail in your opinion?

Because discovering a map tile by tile and solving puzzles and fetch quests, all while avoiding enemies or devoting all attention to beating them in combat... It doesn't translate well to tabletop gaming.

So you're going to have to pick what makes it Zelda: the kawaii factor?, the fast character progression?, the well concealed railroad?, the SNES charm? What sets it apart from Adventure Time?

Then you come back here and ask for a system that delivers that.
>>
>>48110823
Well, I'm not looking for something that exactly fits the game. What I want to do is tell a story based in the Legend of Zelda universe for some friends. It's why I'm looking for some systems I could tweak and poke at to start with.

Depends on the character. What are you envisioning?
>>
>>48110721
I'm aiming to make a character for an intrigue campaign dealing with a succession crisis, who can handle themselves both in combat and social scenarios effectively, acting as a champion/agent for whatever faction they choose to align with. I'm aware both Lancer and Assassin are decent at this, though I'm not sure how effective some of Lancer's abilities would be outside of a battlefield/formal duel where they're able to don full armor/arms astride a horse.

It always translates to one of two things:
A.) The GM is too lazy to actually come up with even the barest thread of plot direction or story arc
B.) The players all decide to do different things and the sandbox becomes a WTF mess of random bullshit that's worse than Skyrim with mods.

In this thread post the pros and cons of your current GM or GMs, or critique your own GM style. If that is not applicable, post the pros and cons to certain players in your group. Also, please post the games played and if the GM is strictly an online presence, or if this is at a real table.

Real Life GM (Normally running versions of D&D, GURPS, or Pathfinder)-

PROS:
He's a professional fantasy/science fiction writer
Always comps free soda and food with no questions asked
Level headed and narrative minded
Can houserule and homebrew game elements in a balanced, professional way
Has run ten player games in the past like they were nothing

CONS:
When he says "2:00" he means "3:30 and time to pick up pizza"
Almost always runs a GM character
The official rules don't mean shit to him, you end up having to memorize his notes and changes like a patch log
Does not like beer at the table

Errata:
His games have the distinct feeling of a higher fantasy "Game of Thrones"
He has no problem involving younger players at all, so sometimes we are running games with younger end teenagers at the table

Why don't you value clarity and inclusiveness? It's a problem I noticed that continually pops up, and it's only because a few people are attached to a purposely-dumb-sounding and largely outdated acronym that is absolutely unnecessary, and whatever wellspring of humor it was tapping from has long since dried up.

It's just bad jargon at this point, and there's no need to perpetuate bad jargon like it's your favorite pet term.

>It seems so under powered when compared to 3e.

Welcome to magic in general in 5e, and thank Pelor for it. All the magic classes are weaker now, and this a good thing because they no longer completely overshadow everyone else by level 6.

As far as building a decent necromancer... meh, honestly you're better off just going for conjuration and making deals with demons and the like. Warlocks in particular tend to lend themselves to this well.

You are completely and overwhelmingly incorrect, as 6th-level is precisely when necromancers attain a tremendous power upgrade.

D&D 5e's "bounded accuracy" makes a swarm of generic human skeletons with shortbows exceedingly vicious, particularly if the mob rules from the Dungeon Master's Guide (which occupy an odd space between "default rule" and "optional rule") are in play.

This is all the more the case for a 6th-level necromancer wizard, who can add...

Did this really need an entire thread? just go to the AoS general, most of the people there are pretty happy with the newer releases, particularly the new Ironjawz and Sylvaneth. The points being added in also did away with a lot of the shitposting about AoS not being a real game. however, everyone has opinions, you will have people who will hate anything AoS comes up with simply because they think GW destroyed their setting and they can't play with rulebooks that came out 3-5 years ago
>>
>>48105063

/tg/ hates AoS. But they make some great models. And some really dorky models.

AoS was a total shitshow but GW is at least attempting to fix it now with the general's handbook and adding back in point costs. Still doesn't fix the weird ass setting though.

The ghost of HPL is elected by the Local Nyarlathotep's Union for the position of Galactic Overlord as a lark. He will destroy the Earth unless you can show him one work which proves that his legacy is not a cargo cult of superficial imitation. What do you show him?

>System without an outright fail state

Think it could work?

Now, I'm not talking about the players succeeding at absolutely everything forever. I'm just talking about less "no" and more "yes, but..."

You mean like Strike! or Fellowship RPG?
>>
>>48100618
Not familiar with either of those. Care to give me a quick rundown?
>>
>>48100605
It can work sometimes, but I prefer a chance for outright failure.

Hey all, I've been thinking of picking up Blades in the Dark recently, has anyone run it yet? Anyone have thoughts on it? I took a look at the quick start rules and it seemed really fun.

Anyone wanna' chime in?

Is this supposed to be Dishonored the RPG?

With the serial numbers filed off, but basically.

Could be used to run any number of dark, low-magic fantasy settings, though.

1 MB,
If you do necromancers as anything other than autistic betas who learned necromancy so they could live their revenge fantasies, you're not doing them right.

Prove me wrong.

Ran a necromancer once who was just a creepy fucker. Not creepy like horror; creepy like the mouth-breather who wants to show you his Pokeymans. The entire party assumed he was evil, bur he was just neutral with low CHA.

Autistic? Maybe. Beta? Definitely. But he learned necromancy because his little sister fell to her death while climbing a tree on a dare, and the town cleric couldn't raise her. So that's why he was followed around be a Small skeleton familiar.

>>48099575
Factually incorrect. The best necromancers fancy themselves artists, sculpting horrors of the flesh in strange new ways and declaring them beautiful masterpieces. If they happen to be the vain sort of artist that can't take critique and then sics their "art" on anyone that disagrees, well, that makes for a nice bonus.

This is the worst, edgiest fucking thing you can possibly do with a necromancer.

Well, if you couldn't Catan, then he has a point. How can someone run a game for people who aren't mesmerizing?
>>
>>48099567
Why'd he get mad? I thought the point of Catan was to be the last guy to bore-quit. I thought that's how you win that shitty game.

Either way, doesn't seem like a loss to me. Was he gonna run a Catan based campaign or something? Fugg em.

Not a catan based game. Some seemingly interesting bronze age Conan style setting. I feel like we missed out but come on, one game of Catan to judge?

70 KB,
So I'm considering creating an (evil) NPC for my players to encounter in their adventures, who is essentially a non-localized mind that can reside in many different bodies at the same time.

I have my own, more general ideas on how I would do this
But it's got me thinking whether any of you have ever done this, and if so how did you go about it?

Also, general hive mind discussion thread.

Holy fuck, I just realised.

How the FUCK did a human eye get into the overmind?

...have you seen a human eye?

>>48099155
...of course, haven't all normal humans done so?
