That's actually a pretty interesting idea.

It would be a bit more abstract, but the most important bits of information (distance, marching order, whether or not you're surrounded, etc.) would be preserved, though you'd lose an entire dimension of tactical movement.

However, it would be easier to track height/depth, which may be more important in submarine/plane/flying game, though my guess is that players would prefer top down and some other form of notation for height.

Ultimately, it might be best to go the Paper Mario route, where the world...

How would a world have developed without the discovery of petrol/oil/cars in general? Could it still be advanced in the way we are today?

Plastics would probably not have developed to anywhere near the same extent.

Electric vehicles and related technologies would probably be more advanced than what we have now.

would coal be the most prominent power source (prior to nuclear, solar anyway)

I am mainly trying to develop a world that is as developed/more developed than now, but has no cars, but I am just trying to think of how people would get around without them, and how the world would be different to ours if oil and cars didn't exist - since it would affect a great deal of industries and development.

Public transportation, in the form of street cars/metros/subways and the like maybe? Or maybe day to day travel inside a city would be via golf cart type vehicles like some beach communities have, with intercity travel handled by trains.

A big major difference would be in air travel. No petroleum products...

Wondering when non-PC adventurer's retire in your setting tg, assuming adventuring is not unique to your PC's

Around what levels do they normally stop? Why this Level/level range? Is it generally around low or mid or high levels? How uncommon is it for adventurers to rise above this level?

Again this is about NPC people with adventuring class levels in your setting not the PC's

Veterans are listed as CR3 in 5e, so that's about level 5.
>>
>>47794632
Probably about level 5. By that time most either hit a big enough score that allows them to buy their way into a more respectable job and settle down, have a close enough brush with death that it scares them into giving it up, or die. The ones who carry on are the ones with a genuine calling, or such a deep-rooted sense of wanderlust that they won't ever be satisfied living in one place.
>>
>>47794632
I'd give them a back story involving a critical hit that cost a limb or eye or some such. Maybe have an ex-PC show up having suffered a grievous wound. Adjust level accordingly.

Rumored MtG banned list for July:

Modern: Sensei's Divining Top is unbanned in order to give blue decks more power, and also to give Mardu control decks more power, as this will allow them to play Dark Confidant, Nahiri, and Emrakul in the same deck. This will also allow Miracles to emerge as an archetype in the format. In order to keep the newly unbanned Top in check, Counterbalance is banned.

Legacy: In order to keep Miralces in check, Counterbalance is banned.

Where does this rumor come from? Who said it?

Also, if true, it's retarded beyond reason. Top was banned for time issues, WotC admits this. Additionally, Miracles, while good, is hardly the best deck in Legacy and it is seriously up for debate as to if Counterbalance deserves a ban.

Villain design, in terms of an RPG, is all about creating interesting interactions with the players. A good villain is one which gives your player characters things to do, which creates interesting situations for them to experience and has an adversarial personality they can play off of.

Beyond general principles though, it's hard to say anything more without knowing the setting and style of a game. What makes a villain good varies massively between a heroic fantasy game, a hard sci-fi game and contemporary mystery game. All have their own genre conventions, requirements...

I'm about to start DMing for a group full of people I've never met at the behest of someone I've dated, who will also be playing. The logical thing to do seems to be to do a preliminary, one-off adventure/dungeon so I can get a feel for how the group operates and how everybody plays before throwing them into a campaign proper.

Do not run Tomb of Horrors. That is a terrible introduction to RPGs.

I have a DM who, without exception, starts every campaign at a bar. The bar has run out of booze, because the workers are to scared to go into the basement that's become infested with giant rats. PCs go downstairs and kill the rats.

You can spice this up any number of ways. Unsafe staircases and floorboards. The rats are diseased. Turns out the bartender is actually a rat too. There are no rats, just thugs who try to rob the players.

Wanted to know what people thought of a combat system I created as my first "crash course" in TCG creation. I wanted a system that reflected more on movesets, and a fast-paced action orientation (think KD for babies).
Basically, your character's stats would obviously judge IF your character can wield certain weapons, and HOW effective they can be used! Totally up for suggestions, and don't really care if the idea is taken and reworked by another.

Good start. I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Were you thinking of taking it as a CCG/deckbuilder or as a crunch for a more traditional RPG? Because I can see it working well both ways.
>>
>>47791588
Kinda card-based, with a classical D&D roleplaying mechanic as filler inbetween the action-oriented combat. Cards would be for armor and weapons, while the rest is on a traditional sheet.

1 B,
The RuneQuest 6 guys put out their free off of Mythras with the core releasing Julyish. Looking through it they were not kidding about the formatting. The free document is now down to 34 pages (previously 203 pages) making it very much a lightweight game without a lot of detail.

I like the new layout a lot, it's a much better rules reference now and the new character sheet is an improvement. I think I might pick up the full core book instead of relying on my RQ6 book.

What's going on with Runequest IP? I read in another thread that Chaosium is releasing their own 7e? It seems like 6e just came out and was barely supported.
>>
>>47791292
6e came out in 2012, has an active community, 4-5 setting books, 4-5 supplements, a few adventures, a combat effect app for android, and gets continued support as Mythras. That's not bad.

Chaosim took the license back for 7e and then announced they are making it a reprint of 2e. And that's after they flat reprinted 2e.
>>
>>47792327
Huh. Then there's the Heroquest line... I guess I don't understand why the owners of the IP (whoever they are?) are licensing it out to competing publishers. Seems crazy for such a niche product.

I'm reading through Mythras light and it appears to cover futuristic combat and skills appropriate to a scifi setting. I didn't realize they were going in that direction.

Have your players complained?
Have they expressed any concerns as to your DM style?

If not, shine on.
>>
>>47789352

I've gotten complaints, but not relating to railroading or being too directional.

Most of my complaints I get is that I put in too little action and too much dialog or investigation. And that my fights can on occasion, be too "puzzle-like", that there's a right approach or way to ambush the enemy, and if you don't do it, the fight is too tough.
>>
The advice you're given stems largely from the fact hat 99.999% of players are complete fucking retards and ridiculous spergs who care nothing for the plot or the tone of the game and just want to muderhobo their way through a session and make bad jokes out of everything they encounter.

The corollary to this is that if your players aren't the ACTIVE type of stupid that is described above, they're more likely to be the PASSIVE type of stupid, and require you to drag them by the nose through a plot because they can't choose or figure anything out on their own.

The inevitable question is "Are any players not stupid?" to which the answer is, no.

Why are people that play tabletops (mostly card games and wargames, but to some extent RPGs as well) so obsessed with winning? I legitimately do not understand this. Is it not enough for people to just have a fun time with others playing a game? Why do people get some sort of perverse pleasure for watching others suffer and lose? It boggles my mind. Ask yourself, "why do people who play sports want to win the game when they play?"

Then consider, why would someone who plays a competitive game but instead of exercise instead devotes thousands of dollars of disposable income into being able to play the game at a competitive level want to win the game?
>>
>>47788193
It's because a high percentage of tabletop gamers have poor social skills mixed with crippling insecurities because of their own lack of personal control over their lives.

They can't 'win' by being funny or attractive, so the only thing left to them is their hobby, which they can control. THey can control it so well that they can only find pleasure in crushing their opponents, rather than enjoying a game. It's the reason you have That Guy rules lawyers.
>>
>>47788243
I mean I'm an autist myself with poor social skills as well, but at least I recognize that my own enjoyment at winning in a game is less important than everyone else having fun. When people say "winning is fun" that seems very self-centered to me because you are literally prioritizing your own enjoyment over that of your opponent or everyone else. It just seems very counter intuitive to me.

So I have a question /tg/

How do you guys pull off recurring villains? Like not overpowered guys who show up, beat up the party, then teleport away. Guys who the party should have a reasonable chance to defeat (and at times may have to) but at the same time he could show up again later?

In a lot of cases it just seems like the guy would die before the recurring part every kicks off. Either by accident (well he was going to surrender at half health but, well, that critical hit really did a number), design (Well he was going to run away but the party made plans to...

Recurring villains usually work for a higher villain down the road, so have that villain see them as too valuable to let the recurring villain die and gives him either trinkets to aid in escaping or fake his death- or revives that person if the party kills him.

If this is a setting where they can't do that or there is no higher villain they serve then Doom bot it.

Either have them act at a distance (though messengers, recordings, etc) or don't tag them as The Big Bad.

If he winds up in the same room as the party, you'll have to be ok with your precious plot going off the rails. If you think about it, it makes sense right? Why would you personally seek out your own assassins unless you wanted to set up a dumb video game cut scene?

You can also just not have a BBEG...

This guy isn't actually a BBEG, and actually yes the enemy IS the leadership of a whole church.

This guy is more of a non-friendly rival to the party, like you said a guy who will go up in ranks as the party becomes a bigger threat.

And again if plans fail and he DOES get killed its not a huge deal, its an organization and this guy can be replaced, its just I kind of want the dynamic of him being a constant thorn.

Last time we discussed russian folklore and came to a conclusion that it is NOT a grimdark, depressing low fantasy setting.

Doesn't matter. I'm making a fantasy NobleDark world and I'm in search for ideas.

So far we have three nations:
Tzar land. Very religous, ruled by a tsar.

Red land. More liberal, inspired by Comunism. Lke to wear red. Have cossacs. Leader is elected by warchiefs.

Suka land. Land of people wearing stripped clothes. Most of the area are swamps. People like to squat. Ruled by various Knjazi.

Religions/magic:

For races I think we will have humans. Spirits (no one is sure how they are born, see Kami from Mushishi or Kekkaishi) and Undead.

Undead have various forms, and various level of intelligence. Most are harmful and are extermniated on sight but some as rusalkas mentioned above can be used by cunning minds.

I also wanted to put back the power of the songs as in Tolkien works. Good singer can work powerful magic with the right intsrument and the right moment. Put people to sleep create illusions. Other powers singing can have?

Hard to squat in swamp, bratny. Need hard surface, concrete-like, to do justice to squat legend.

They Squat on tree branches, while running arrows on the swamp invaders from above.

You ever play in a game (or run one) where all the PCs are part of the same family?

I think it could be fun.

I don't think i'd enjoy it.

Unless it was an ERP.

Families aren't fun.

Family bonds are useful for bringing players together, for example making everyone cousins. That's about it.

66 KB,
When is it considered unsportsmanlike to concede a game in MTG?

>playing against a dude with B/G removal/ManLands designed around plinking you away slowly while destroying any creature you can play
>Has over 23 removal spells
>I only have 20ish creatures, my gameplay is based around playing creatures
>he can literally in ANY hand deal with my opening hand of 3 playable creatures and remove anything I can play afterwards
>almost no responses, gamestate is just drawing cards, taking damage, playing a creature that gets blasted off the table

Next Standard night, if I run into him again with the same deck, I plan to concede the round to him. I understand this may seem salty, but my deck has almost literally 0 play against him. And in this current rotation, I don't have a real way to deal with his removal in a 15 card sideboard. I'm sure he enjoys playing things each turn and having things to do, but I don't enjoy sitting down for 30 minutes only to have almost 0 interactivity.

So, is it considered unsportsmanlike to concede when you see a deck type you literally cannot compete against?

No, but I know the pain you speak of. My senior year, one of my friends was a control player and constantly used a deck of nothing but kill spells.
>>
You got mad

Use your sideboard or just play a game for humor and concede g2. He could potentially get mana screwed/flooded twice.
>>
>>47787371
There is zero shame in knowing when you can't win and cutting to the chase.

However, sideboards are a thing; consider dedicating a few sideboard cards to matchups like this. Creatures with hexproof or indestructible, for example.

Has any one else watched this? : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7F2cwguf1I

I am 35 mins in to the video and 2 things thatjumped out at me are:
"the Ip manager told us to stop hinting at it (at legions 2 and 11) "
(talking about the 6 DAngels wings) "Dread wing, and then you have storm wing, Iron wing and Fire wing" FIRE WING what is this? what dose it mean?

The Wing that focuses on Flamers and Meltas. DA's legion gimmick appears to be the prototype Legion that tested our everyone else's specialty and still retains knowledge of how to do all of it.

I assume this is explained by saying most of the other wings were wiped out during the accidental armoury explosion that destroyed Caliban after the Horus Heresy.
